[Two Formulas, Twelve Exorcism Methods, Seven Acupuncture and Moxibustion Methods]
Indication: For malaria persisting for years without cure; this formula can effect a cure within 21 to 30 days.
Shuqi (Herba Pteridis Massalongii), Zhimu (Radix Anemarrhenae), Baiwei (Herba Cynanchi Atrati), Digupi (Cortex Lycii), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (decored of heart), Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) (each 5 fen), Hengshan (Radix Datiscae Glabrae) (1 liang 5 qian), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (2 liang, ground).
The above thirteen ingredients are pounded and sifted into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wu zi (seed of Sterculia lychnophora). Take ten pills on an empty stomach with warm water, twice daily. Gradually increase the dose to 20–30 pills.
Indication: For malaria and miasma malaria in the Jiangnan region.
Lingli Jia (Carapax Emys Sinensis or similar turtle shell, roasted), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis, roasted), Ouziyu Gu (Endoconcha Sepiae), Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata) (prepared, peeled, each 1 liang), Hengshan (Radix Datiscae Glabrae) (3 liang).
The above five ingredients are cut into small pieces. Soak in three sheng of wine overnight. Drink slowly in small amounts before the onset of fever. Do not suppress vomiting; apply the residue to the five centers (palms, soles, and chest). Fast on the day of treatment, and resume eating only after a long time has passed since the expected onset.
Liver malaria causes a pale complexion, frequent sighing, and a condition resembling death. Prick the Foot-Jueyin Liver channel until blood appears.
Heart malaria causes severe mental restlessness, a desire for cold water, chills predominating over heat. Prick the Shenmen point of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channel.
Spleen malaria causes chills, abdominal pain, intestinal borborygmus during fever, and sweating after the borborygmus ceases. Prick the Foot-Taiyin Spleen channel.
Lung malaria causes extreme chilliness of the heart with body heat, intermittent fright, and visual hallucinations. Prick the Hand-Taiyin Lung and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine channels.
Kidney malaria causes despondency, lumbar and spinal pain, difficulty turning over, difficult defecation, blurred vision, and cold hands and feet. Prick the Foot-Taiyang Bladder and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney channels.
Stomach malaria causes chills preceding illness, easy hunger but inability to eat, distension and fullness, and abdominal enlargement. Prick the transverse vessels of the Foot-Yangming Stomach and Foot-Taiyin Spleen channels to release blood.
Huangdi asked Qibo: "There are many methods for treating malaria, yet few result in a cure. Why is this?"
Qibo replied: "Malaria has twelve types."
Huangdi said: "What are the names of these twelve malaria ghosts? May I hear them?"
Qibo replied: "If you obtain the true name of 'malaria', it will be cured. If you do not know its name, a hundred methods will fail."
Huangdi said: "I wish to hear about the twelve hours when the malaria ghost attacks."
Qibo replied: "Attacks at Yin hour (03:00-05:00) are caused by ghosts who died in prison. Treat by having the patient sit on ashes and embers from a kiln for one week, ensuring the fire does not go out; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Mao hour (05:00-07:00) are caused by ghosts whipped to death. Treat by burning five white garments into ash, taking a pinch (three fingers' width), and mixing with wine (or clear water if wine is unavailable) for ingestion. Attacks at Chen hour (07:00-09:00) are caused by ghosts who fell from trees to their death. Treat by having the patient climb high up a tree and block the branches with thorns; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Si hour (09:00-11:00) are caused by ghosts burned to death. Treat by having the patient sit while the physician ignites fires all around; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Wu hour (11:00-13:00) are caused by ghosts who starved to death. Treat by having the patient hold a torch made of fat in an uninhabited field, burn the fat until fragrant, pretend to gather firewood, and leave; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Wei hour (13:00-15:00) are caused by ghosts who drowned. Treat by having the patient cross flowing eastward water three times just before the attack; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Shen hour (15:00-17:00) are caused by ghosts who stabbed themselves to death. Treat by having the patient stab a grave with a knife just before the attack, ask for the ghost's surname and given name, and chant: 'If you recover, I will remove your suffering'; then the disease will cease. Attacks at You hour (17:00-19:00) are caused by ghosts of servants/slaves who died. Treat by having the patient lie prone on a mortar, ensuring no one speaks their name; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Xu hour (19:00-21:00) are caused by ghosts who hanged themselves. Treat by using a rope from the left side to tightly bind the patient's hands, feet, waist, and head; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Hai hour (21:00-23:00) are caused by ghosts of robbers who died. Treat by placing a knife on the patient's abdomen, an arrow horizontally beneath it, and a circle of ashes; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Zi hour (23:00-01:00) are caused by ghosts of widows. Treat by having the patient undress and lie on a bed in the eastern wing, holding a knife in the left hand and a staff in the right hand, striking continuously to make noise, with a clay basin of water placed by the roadside; then the disease will cease. Attacks at Chou hour (01:00-03:00) are caused by ghosts who were beheaded. Treat by having the patient lie in front of the door, head facing east, allowing blood to flow under the head; then the disease will cease."
Formula for cases where malaria physicians cannot save the patient:
Measure the circumference of the patient's foot, including the heel and five toes, with a string. Cut the string. Place the measured string across the neck, extending backwards along the back. At the point corresponding to the tip of the string on the midline of the spine, perform moxibustion with thirty moxa cones (zhuang). The condition will stabilize. If chills recur, urgently perform another thirty cones of moxibustion to stabilize. Wait until more than one meal-time has passed since the last attack to observe. Even if hungry, do not feed the patient throughout the day. This method is miraculous. For males, treat the left side; for females, the right side.
