[Nine Prescriptions]
For all cases of back carbuncle (Fabei) and sores/ulcers with swelling, whether ulcerated or not:
Take three sheng of Fermented Soybean Paste (Xiangchi), mix with a small amount of water, cook thoroughly, and pound into a thick paste. Form into cakes approximately three fen thick. If there is already an opening, do not cover it. Place the fermented soybean cake on the swollen area, arrange moxa on top, and moxibustion until warm. It should be merely warm; do not cause skin rupture. If heat causes pain, replace immediately. The sore/ulcer will gradually decrease and surely heal. Moxibustion once or twice a day is sufficient. If there was previously an opening with discharge, it will heal upon discharge.
Prescription for sores/swelling, back carbuncle, and various toxic swellings:
Ulmus davidiana var. japonica bark (Yubai pi), Trichosanthes fruit (Gualou) [each 5 liang], juice extracted from washed menstrual cloth of women, soil from swallow's nest (Huyan ke tu), soil from rat burrow (Shutu) [each 10 liang].
Pound and mix the above five ingredients into a paste for topical application. Swelling will gradually subside within one day and fully heal in five days. If the paste cracks, reapply to the periphery, and it will heal.
Prescription for various sores/swellings where no other remedy works, specifically back carbuncle and boils that are painful:
Apply steamed millet grains alternately as hot compresses to the affected area until healed. (Another method suggests using rose calyxes for alternating moxibustion and hot compress.)
Prescription for sores/ulcers occurring in hidden areas of the abdomen and back, with dozens of sores throughout the body:
Take dry cow dung, burn it to ash, mix with egg white, and apply topically. Replace when dry. Stop when healed.
Another prescription: Mix oyster shell powder (Muli fen) with strong vinegar and apply topically until healed.
Mainly for reducing swelling and resolving pus in sores/ulcers:
Saussurea lappa root (Muzhansi), Ginseng root (Renshen), Dried ginger (Ganjiang) [or Dried Rehmannia root (Gadihuang)], Cinnamon twig heart (Guixin), Asarum root (Xixin), Prepared Magnolia bark (Nongpi), Patrinia herb (Baijiang), Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), Platycodon root (Jiegeng), Trichosanthes fruit (Gualou).
Pound and sieve the above eleven ingredients into a powder. Take one fangcun bi (a measuring spoon) with wine. After swallowing, one should feel the medicinal power flowing into the sore. If moxibustion cannot expel pus/toxin from the sore/ulcer, this medicine may be taken. If the sore has not yet ulcerated, remove Patrinia herb (Baijiang); if pus has formed, add Patrinia herb (Baijiang). Take seven times during the day and twice at night; more frequent dosing is better. If the disease is located lower in the body and pus/blood discharges, this is intestinal abscess (Changyong). For diseases located internally, only by taking this medicine will one feel its efficacy; pain will cease immediately. Long-term use treats various sores, ulcers, and hemorrhoids. Ulcers that have ulcerated will heal early. Physicians who do not know how to use this medicine find that back carbuncles are incurable; only by taking this medicine can they be cured. If one initially feels discomfort on the back accompanied by thirst, take it diligently. If the medicinal action takes effect, thirst will stop and the condition will dissipate. Even if already ulcerated, take it day and night without stopping; swelling will naturally dissipate unnoticed. For long-term use, remove Patrinia herb (Baijiang). This is suitable for rapid administration in women with breast abscess (Ruyong). (Another version excludes Cinnamon twig heart (Guixin)).
Prescription for sores/ulcers with chronic discharge, male back carbuncle, female breast abscess, and five types of hemorrhoids:
Burned stomach lining (Weipi), burned honeycomb (Fengfang) [each one unit], Sichuan pepper (Shujiao) [stir-fried until oil/sweat appears], Dried ginger (Ganjiang) [each 1 liang], Prepared Magnolia bark (Nongpi) [1.5 liang], Processed Aconite root (Fuzi, peeled), Cinnamon twig heart (Guixin), Angelica sinensis root (Danggui), Teasel root (Xuduan), Ligusticum root (Ben), Ulmus root bark (Diyupi) [each 5 qian].
Pound and sieve the above eleven ingredients into a powder. Take one fangcun bi with wine, three times daily. Adding seven Mylabris beetles (Banmao) improves efficacy.
Prescription for bone abscess (Guju) unhealed by hundred methods:
Perform sequential moxibustion directly on the sore for three days and nights; all will heal.
Another prescription:
For chronic sores that do not heal, recur after healing, or where bone protrudes from the opening (defined as bone abscess/Guju): Take one dead female black chicken, clean off the meat, extract the bones, and calcine them to ash. Scrape wood chips from "Niuju mu" from three different households, and scrape fibers from cooking cloths ("Chandan") from three different households, each weighing one liang. Calcine all separately to ash. Mix these ashes and apply into the sore. Dozens of fragments of broken bone should be expelled, leading to cure.
