One Treatise, Twenty-One Formulas, Three Moxibustion Methods
Treatise: All carbuncles and sores (Yong Ju) are the fundamental pathological changes of ulcers. After a carbuncle ruptures, if pus does not stop flowing, exposure to cold will result in "Shu Lou" (a chronic suppurative disease characterized mainly by cervical lymph node tuberculosis). Therefore, formulas for treating fistulas/leaks are listed subsequently, and urgent treatment is required.
Formula for Treating Shu Lou:
Portulaca Oleracea Herb (Wuchi Cao, 5 sheng, chopped) Bark of White Tree (Baipi, 1 jin, boiled in water until reduced to 5 sheng, take 1 sheng of clarified liquid) Musk (Shexiang, half umbilical amount, dried and ground into powder) Apricot Kernel (Xingren, 0.5 sheng, fried with yeast until black, pounded into powder)
Store the above four ingredients in a porcelain vessel, mix thoroughly, and tightly seal the mouth with three or four layers of silk. If the lesion has already formed an ulcer, wash it with reduced rice-washing water decoction, apply the medicine as a plaster on the ulcer, and change it three times daily. If no ulcer has formed yet, resembling Luoli (scrofula/cervical lymphadenitis), fumigate with one sheng of Artemisia Argyi Leaf (Ai Ye) until it turns yellow like a date; or pound dry Xi (here retaining original term) date-sized pieces along with the other two ingredients into powder, mix with Ai Ye to form moxa cones, and perform moxibustion for 21 moxa cones (San Qi Zhuang) until cessation.
Formula for Treating Various Fistulas/Leaks:
Collect feces from newborns within 100 days of birth, store them in a sealed container for five to six days, and apply to the ulcer hole.
Another Formula:
Cut carp intestines into five segments, warm them over fire. First wash the ulcer and dry it, then apply the intestine to the wound. Replace when cool. From morning to night, when it dries, only itching is felt. Open to check for worms coming out; the disease will heal.
Another Formula:
Take three chicken eggs, boil them in rice water for half a day (approx. 4 hours). Take the yolks and fry them until black. First wipe the ulcer discharge dry, then insert the medicine into the ulcer hole. Do not exceed three applications.
Another Formula:
Use lard from the twelfth lunar month. Dip paper in it and insert into the ulcer hole. Apply five times during the day and three times at night.
Formula for Wind Fistula and Shu Fistula:
Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou) Belamcanda Rhizome (Bailian) Oyster Shell (Muli, calcined) Astragalus Root (Huangqi)
Pound and sieve the above four ingredients in equal parts to make a powder. Take one cun-bi (measure) with wine, three times daily.
Formula for Ant Fistula:
Take fourteen scales of Pangolin Scales (Lingli Jia), burn them into powder, and apply mixed with lard.
Another Formula: Take one Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), crush it, and apply mixed with duck fat.
Formula for Fistula/Leak:
Iron Filings (Tiexie) Bone of Dog Cheek with Teeth (Gou Jia Lian Chi Gu) Tiger Feces (Hu Shi) Deer Horn Armor with Half Hair Quoted from Qianjin: Deer Skin with Hair (Lu Jiao Jia Ban Qu Mao) (each 2 liang)
Pound and sieve the above four ingredients to make a powder. Mix with lard and insert into the ulcer hole. Change frequently, five to six times daily.
Formula for Treating Shu Fistula:
Dead Rat (one medium-sized) Tangled Hair (Luan Fa, size of a chicken egg)
Boil the dead rat and hair in just enough lard from the twelfth lunar month over low heat. When the rat and hair dissolve completely and the ointment forms, apply it to the ulcer. Also take half a fen approximately with wine. The dead rat will be expelled from the ulcer.
Formula for Cold-Heat Luoli (Scrofula):
Forsythia Fruit (Lianqiao) Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) Astragalus Root (Huangqi) Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) Trichosanthes Root (Gualou) Thladiantha Root (Tugua Gen) Peony Root (Shaoyao) Polygala Root (Hengshan) each 1 liang Gentian Root (Longdan) 2 liang Civet Cat Skull Bone (Li Tou Gu, one piece, roasted)
Pound and sieve the above nine ingredients to make a powder. Take five fen-bi with wine, three times daily.
Rose Pill Formula for Treating Body Luoli, Frequent Small Ulcers, and Oral Ulcers:
Rose Root (Qiangwei Gen) Phellodendron Bark (Huangbai) Astragalus Root (Huangqi) Ginseng Root (Huangshen/Renshen) Peony Root (Shaoyao) Sophora Root (Kushen) Belamcanda Rhizome (Bailian) Trichosanthes Root (Gualou) Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng) Gardenia Fruit (Zhizi) Gentian Root (Longdan) Rhamnus Root Bark (Shuli Genpi) each 1 liang Batatavine Root (Shilongrui) 2 liang
Pound and sieve the above thirteen ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take ten pills with water, three times daily. (Note: Huangbai is absent in the Qianjin formula.)
Neck Fistula:
Pound fresh Phytolacca Root (Shanglu) into cakes the size of large coins, thickness 3 fen. Apply to the fistula and perform moxibustion. Replace when the cake dries and becomes hot. Moxibustion can use 3-4 sheng of moxa; the disease will heal.
Method One:
Lepidium Seed (Tinglizi) 2 he Fermented Soybeans (Chi) 1 sheng
Pound the above two ingredients thoroughly until soft and cooked-like. Make cakes as described above. Place one cake over the hole and apply moxa cones the size of a little finger. Perform three moxa cones per cake, changing after each set. Total: three cakes, nine cones. Once daily, moxibustion every three days.
Method Two:
For any single Luoli nodule that is about to become a carbuncle or boil, remove the top and bottom of a single garlic clove. Perform moxibustion as previously described, three times daily, until healed.
Method Three:
On the seventh day of the seventh lunar month before sunrise, collect Hemp Flower (Mahua). On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, collect Mugwort (Ai). Mix equal parts to form moxa cones. Perform over 100 moxa cones on the fistula.
Formula for Treating Fistula:
Portulaca Oleracea Herb (Machi Cao, shade-dried) Ash of Pure Hemp Candle from Twelfth Lunar Month (Chunmazhu Jin)
Mix the above two ingredients in equal parts, sift finely, and blend with lard from the twelfth lunar month. First wash the ulcer with warm rice-washing water, dry it, and apply.
Another Formula:
Oak Bark (Humu Pi) one chi long, six cun wide. Remove black outer bark and cut finely. Boil in two dou of water until reduced to five sheng. Strain, add ten ting of white sugar, and simmer until reduced to one sheng. Divide into three doses. Store in a copper vessel. If vomiting occurs, observe the vomitus in the vessel.
Another Formula:
At noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, take one shi of Portulaca Oleracea Herb. Boil in one shi of water until reduced to three dou. Strain, add ten ting of white sugar, and simmer until reduced to nine sheng. Divide into three doses. Store in a copper vessel. If vomiting occurs, observe the vomitus in the vessel.
