Treatise: One Article; Formulas: Twenty-One Articles
The treatise states: To treat Hongjiao (Foot Qi disease), one must conform to the four seasons. In spring and autumn, tonification and purgation should be employed concurrently. In summer, the condition tends to develop rapidly, requiring exclusive use of diaphoresis (sweating) and diuresis (promoting urination). After the tenth month, tonifying medicines should be used sparingly. Although there may be minor variations in symptoms, the treatment principles do not deviate from this method.
Formula for early-stage Hongjiao starting from the feet and extending to the knees and shins with swelling and bone pain:
Take Sesame leaves (Sesamum indicum leaves), chop them, pound them, steam them, and apply thinly to the affected area. Change the dressing twice daily until the swelling subsides. If treating in winter, take the roots of Dioscorea bulbifera (Shuoyang root), chop them, pound them, and mix with three parts fermented grain residue (jiuzao) and one part Dioscorea bulbifera root. Steam the mixture until hot and apply as described above.
For generalized swelling and difficult urination, the primary formula is Mahou Tang (Hemp Bean Decoction):
Cannabis seeds (Dama), two sheng, roasted and ground; Black soybeans (Wudou), one dou, boiled in four and a half dou of water to yield one and a half dou of juice, beans discarded; Mulberry bark (Sangbaipi), chopped, five sheng.
Combine the three ingredients with the soybean juice and boil to obtain six sheng of decoction. Take one sheng per dose, twice daily. Complete the course within three days.
Another formula: Cattle urine, one sheng per dose, twice daily. Discontinue when swelling subsides. For emaciated patients, mix two parts cattle urine with one part cow's milk, boil together until a skin forms on the surface, then consume.
Another formula: One raw pig liver, finely chopped. Consume entirely with mild garlic paste. If it cannot be consumed at once, divide into two doses.
Formula for treating waist and foot pain:
Sesame seeds (Huma), one dou, fresh.
Roast the single ingredient until fragrant, pound, and sieve. Sieve repeatedly to ensure the oil does not escape but the powder passes through. Take one small sheng per dose, three times daily. Finish one dou of the medicinal juice, and the disease will be permanently cured. It can be taken with wine, soup, or honey water.
Formula for Shihu Jiu (Dendrobium Wine) for post-purgation weakness with cold limbs, weak legs, spasmodic lower back pain, reduced appetite, and loose skin and flesh:
Fresh Dendrobium stem (Shihu), one jin; Gastrodia rhizome (Qinjiao); Polygala root (Yuanzhi), each five liang, heart removed; Tangerine peel (Jupi); Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu), each three liang; Salvia miltiorrhiza root (Danshen); Poria sclerotium (Fushen); Five-leaf Acanthopanax bark (Wujiapi), each six liang; Cinnamon twig heart (Guixin), four liang; Achyranthes bidentata root (Niuxi), eight liang.
Chop the ten ingredients, soak in three dou of wine for seven days. Take six he per dose, gradually increasing to seven or eight he, until therapeutic effect is achieved.
Formula for Buxu Fangfeng Tang (Tonifying Deficiency and Wind-Expelling Decoction) for Hongjiao characterized by lingering pain and soreness in the feet after regulation, triggered by external wind invasion:
Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng); Dendrobium stem (Shihu); Eucommia bark (Duzhong), processed; Peucedanum root (Qianhu), each four fen; Coix seed (Yiyiren), half a jin; Gastrodia rhizome (Qinjiao); Salvia miltiorrhiza root (Danshen); Five-leaf Acanthopanax bark (Wujiapi); Aconite lateral root (Fuzi), processed and peeled; Tangerine peel (Jupi); Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu); Cynanchum stenosiphon root (Baiqian), each three fen; Podocarpus root bark (Fangji), two fen; Hemp seed (Maren), one sheng, roasted for oil extraction.
Chop the fourteen ingredients, boil in twelve sheng of water to obtain three sheng of decoction. Divide into three doses.
Formula for Fangfeng Wan (Wind-Expelling Pill) if Hongjiao persists after taking decoctions:
Saposhnikovia root (Fangfeng), two liang; Gastrodia rhizome (Qinjiao), two liang; Dendrobium stem (Shihu), two liang; Salvia miltiorrhiza root (Danshen), one liang; Coix seed (Yiyiren), three ge; Peucedanum root (Qianhu); Tangerine peel (Jupi); Eucommia bark (Duzhong), processed; Aconite lateral root (Fuzi), processed and peeled; Atractylodes macrocephala rhizome (Baizhu), each one liang; Cinnamon twig heart (Guixin), one and a half liang; Hemp seed (Maren), one sheng, roasted for oil extraction.
