Earth corresponds to the number five; Earth seeks balance, and the Mother prevents Wood from becoming obstructed.
The Inspector Xu Yi fell ill, and the Master went to visit him. Xu Yi said to the Master, "Yesterday, after the medical clerk Liu Zu finished needling the stomach tube, I suffered bitterly from coughing and could not lie down in peace." The Master said, "The needle did not enter the stomach tube accurately but mistakenly injured the Liver. Food intake will decrease day by day, and there will be no rescue within five days." The result was exactly as the Master predicted.
Commentary: People believe that coughing originates from the Lung, unaware that Liver Wind stirring up causes Lung Qi to become uncomfortable, which is sufficient to cause coughing; this is what is called "Wood punishing Metal" (Liver Wood attacking Lung Metal). People believe that reduced appetite stems from the Stomach, unaware that descending Liver Qi causes abdominal distension in the Stomach, making one unable to eat; this is what is called "Wood overcoming Earth" (Liver Wood controlling Spleen/Earth). People believe that insomnia stems from the Kidney, unaware that the Liver is the Sea of Blood; Liver disease leads to Blood deficiency, making it difficult to sleep due to the circumstances; this is what is called "Wood depleting Water" (Liver Wood consuming Kidney Water). The Stomach belongs to Earth, and Earth corresponds to the number five. Five is the end of the Earth numbers; once ended, it cannot restart, hence there is no rescue within five days. These few words passed down from immortals are sufficient to replace tens of millions of medical books, as evidenced by such cases. (Commentary by Sun Simiao)
Crying precedes dysentery, with excessive cold qi in the milk.
Whenever an infant cries, feeding them milk stops the crying. If the milk is cold, the Stomach Qi becomes uncomfortable. Once it enters the贲门 (cardia), if it cannot be vomited upwards, it results in dysentery. Chen Shushan of Dongyang had a two-year-old son who suffered from dysentery, often crying first and growing increasingly emaciated and exhausted each day. He consulted the Master. The Master said, "When his mother was pregnant, Yang Qi nourished internally, causing the milk to become deficient and cold. The child contracted the mother's coldness. The treatment method should focus on treating the mother, and the child will recover spontaneously over time." Therefore, Siwu Nuwan Wan (Siwu Decoction / Four Substance Pill) was administered, and he recovered in ten days.
Commentary: Siwu Tang is an essential medicine for women, possessing the function of invigorating blood and unblocking menstruation. Hua Tuo used this method to treat illness, which is referred to as: "If the child is ill, treat the mother." Whenever treating pediatric diseases, the medication is taken by the mother, and the formulas are selected from gynecology; this therapeutic principle originated here. (Commentary by Sun Simiao)
Water nature rises, and toxins naturally disperse.
Madam of Pengcheng entered the toilet at night and was stung by a scorpion on her hand, groaning in pain without relief. The Master ordered warm water, nearly hot, to soak her hand, allowing her to finally fall asleep. He instructed people to change the water frequently, ensuring it did not cool down even slightly, until dawn when she recovered.
Commentary: When humans suffer from bee stings or snake venom, white alum (Bai Fan), realgar (Xiong Huang), sesame oil, and various herbal medicines are commonly applied, yet they often prove ineffective or even exacerbate swelling and pain. There has never been a method using hot water soaking. Even when hot water is used, failure to replace it promptly renders it ineffective. Observing the Master's method now, it is simple and easy, yet achieves rapid results, which can...
