Among all things between heaven and earth, those that operate and generate are none other than the Five Phases (Wu Xing). Humans are born by inheriting the essence of the Five Phases; thus, they possess these characteristics in their physical form and receive them in their Qi. In heaven, this manifests as the operation of the Four Seasons and Six Qi externally. If one loses its proper way, it becomes a disaster. In humans, it manifests as the Five Flavors and Seven Emotions acting internally; if one deviates from its principle, it becomes disease or rash. When seasonal climates are aberrant, those with virtue harmonize with them; otherwise, diseases and rashes arise, which skilled physicians treat. The rise of medicine has been gradual and long-standing. Xuanyuan Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) recorded it in books, and the *Rites of Zhou* clearly listed its official duties, all to emphasize the importance of human life. However, human diseases present in many forms, and the medical path cannot be pursued through a single method. There are indeed numerous formularies and pharmacopoeias. Since the days of the Ji clan (Zhou dynasty) and Han dynasty down to the present, although many great sages and scholars have compiled and applied treatments meticulously, they have not spread widely in the world. Why? It is not due to poor selection. Rather, treatment lacks standards. Those who understand the art deeply keep its secrets hidden; those ignorant of the Way fail to examine symptoms and signs in detail. By the time of clinical application, errors lead to few perfect cures.
While I, Gun, attended my father during his tenure in Huatai, I fell ill on the road. I encountered mediocre physicians who did not investigate the pulse principles but recklessly administered decoctions, yet my illness was ultimately not cured. Nowadays, people who obtain a wonderful prescription or a miraculous technique seal it up and keep it secret. They are fearful lest others know of it. This is desiring to preserve oneself alone, rather than embodying the benevolent heart of universal love. I, Gun, often reflect that when others suffer from illness, it is as if my own parents were suffering. Eagerly desiring their recovery, I exhausted my energy and deliberated carefully, compiling and organizing this collection to pass on to those interested in doing good. This is also one aspect of "Broad Relief" (Bo Ji). Therefore, I named it *Wangshi Boji Fang* (Wang's Broad Relief Formulas), Preface by Wang Gun.

The above nine ingredients are ground together into powder. Each dose consists of 2 qian, taken with 5 slices of fresh ginger, 2 jujubes, and 1 lamp of water, boiled down to 7/10 parts. Take hot. Follow with thin porridge to assist. Recovery occurs upon sweating.
