The Emperor ordered Zhou Duyun Defu to seek famous prescriptions for treating eye diseases from various regions. He obtained Jinlu Gao (Golden Dew Ointment) from Imperial Physician Liu in Jinan, which proved highly effective. This medicine eliminates visual blurriness and removes corneal opacities, stops hyperemia, and alleviates pain.
[Jinlu Gao] Treats all types of eye diseases with miraculous efficacy.
Ingredients: Huangdan (Lead Oxide) from Zizhou, Ruren (Blossom Pit of Prunus Persica, crushed), each 1 liang; Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), 0.5 liang; Honey, 6 liang.
Preparation and Administration: First, stir-fry Huangdan in an iron pot until it turns purple. Add honey and mix evenly. Pour in 4 sheng of running water. Hold five or seven tender willow branches firmly and stir. Next, add Ruren and boil for more than ten times. Then add Huanglian and stir constantly with a willow branch. Simmer until the liquid reduces to 2 sheng. Pour the decoction through a skimmer onto paper, dripping slowly, ensuring no dust contamination. If there is pterygium (fleshy growth over the cornea), add 1 qian of Nasha (Ammonium Chloride) powder, heat gently until melted, and mix into the previous ointment. This remedy is recorded here due to its frequent efficacy.
[Jiawei Chunxue Gao] Treats eye dimness, itching, pain, difficulty opening eyes due to astringency, excessive tearing, pain, or formation of corneal opacities caused by Wind-Heat attacking upwards.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), 4 liang (washed, soaked overnight in 2 sheng of urine from a prepubescent boy, filtered, and used to quench Lulganshi [Calamina]; retain the Calamina); Lulganshi (Calamina), 12 liang; Haodangdan (Good Lead Oxide), 6 liang (processed by water flotation); Wuyu Gu (Cuttlefish Bone, calcined); Xurong (Frankincense); Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), each 3 qian; Baidingxiang (Stolex Fruit), 0.5 qian; Shexiang (Musk), Qingfen (Calomel), each a small amount; Nasha (Ammonium Chloride), 1 qian (finely ground, mixed with water in a cup, placed in a tea kettle until dry).
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ten ingredients into fine powders separately. Use 20 liang of white sand sugar honey, refined to remove wax. Add the Lulganshi powder and stir constantly. Then add the Haodangdan and other medicinal powders, stirring constantly until the mixture turns purple and does not stick to the hands. Roll into cylindrical sticks. Take one pill each time, dissolve in a small amount of fresh well water, and instill into the eyes frequently. Avoid alcohol, wet dough, pork, and buckwheat.
[Shangqing San] Treats nasal congestion due to upper Jiao Heat, resulting in a lack of clarity in the head and eyes. I used these two formulas during my years accompanying the army in the southern campaign, finding them effective for patients with eye diseases.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Bohe (Mentha Haplocalyx), Jingjiesui (Schizonepeta Spike), each 0.5 liang; Pening (Saltpeter), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), each 1 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take "one zi" (a very small measure) per dose. Hold water in the mouth and insufflate the powder into the nose for excellent results. Adding 3 fen of Longnao (Borneol) is even better.
[Chongming San] Treats toxic Wind-Heat rushing upwards to the eyes, causing sudden redness, swelling, pain, corneal opacities, pterygium, astringency, photophobia, and red, ulcerated eyelids.
Ingredients: Lulganshi (Calamina), 1 jin (calcined, quenched with Huanglian decoction, then powdered); Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), 2 qian (boiled into a paste, mixed with Lulganshi powder, and baked dry); Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Tonglv (Verdigris), each 0.5 liang; Nasha (Ammonium Chloride), 3 qian; Puhuang (Pollen Typhae), 0.5 liang; Xionghuang (Realgar), 2 qian; Lvdou Fen (Mung Bean Starch), 4 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Sift the above six ingredients together with the Lulganshi powder through a fine sieve and grind until extremely fine, tested by chewing without grittiness. Then add 1 qian of Naobo (Borneol) and 1 qian of Nanpingsha (South Borax), grinding finely. Use a quantity equivalent to a soybean, apply with a bone chopstick into the eye, and lie down for a while. Avoid alcohol, wet dough, fish/meat, and spicy/hot foods. This formula was obtained from Family Doctor Lu, who made his living from it.
[Yeguang San] Treats red eyes, corneal opacities, and blurred vision.
Ingredients: Xuan Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Hezi (Chebula Fruit), each 2 liang; Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), 1 liang; Tonglv (Verdigris), 1 qian.
Preparation and Administration: Cut into pieces. Soak in 3 sheng of river water for two days and nights. Decoct in a silver or ceramic vessel to obtain approximately one da zhen (large cup) of liquid. Retain 8 fen of this extract. The process is complete when the dregs turn black. Squeeze the juice through raw silk. Re-decoct using alternating mild and strong fire, stirring with locust or willow branches, until the liquid forms beads when dropped into water. Mix with the following paste: Zhu Yizi (Pig Pancreas), two pieces (remove fat, wrap in rice straw tips, wash in water until clean, cut, and boil in Huanglian paste until black, then use); Lulganshi (Calamina), 1 liang (quench with 1 large bowl of prepubescent boy's urine after heating red with charcoal until urine is absorbed and Calamina turns white powder, then grind fine); Haodangdan (Good Lead Oxide), 4 liang (wash clean with fresh well water, float finely, bake dry); E Li (Goose Pear), ten pieces (peel and core with bamboo knife, squeeze juice using raw cloth); Qingyan (Green Salt), 6 qian (fine powder); Honey, 1 jin (refine to remove wax, stop after one boil).
Preparation and Administration: Boil the pear juice in a Calamina pot for five to seven boils. Add Qingyan and stir with a willow branch until brown. Pour into a porcelain jar and soak in cold ice water to remove fire toxicity. Best prepared in the twelfth lunar month, followed by the first and eleventh months; avoid other months. Dip a copper chopstick into the medicine and instill into the outer canthus of the eye.
[Bixia Dan] Treats red and swollen eyes with difficulty opening due to astringency.
Ingredients: Tonglv (Verdigris), 3 qian; Kubai Fan (Calcined Alum), 3 qian; Xurong (Frankincense), 1 qian.
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Boil Huanglian into a paste, mix with the powder, and form pills the size of a chicken head. Dissolve in water and wash the affected area.
[Yudan Wan] Transmitted by Imperial Physician Tai Shi Qi Zhengchen, highly effective.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Qinpi (Ash Bark), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root) in equal parts.
Preparation and Administration: Wash the three herbs to remove dirt, crush them. Soak in 2 sheng of warm water in a ceramic basin overnight. In a clean room, simmer in an iron pot until reduced to slightly less than half, ensuring all medicinal power is in the water. Filter through new cotton, change cotton and filter twice more. Simmer again until level with the rim of a cup, resembling a thin paste. Transfer to a silver vessel and simmer over charcoal fire into a paste. Add Boren (Borneol) and Lv dou fen (Mung Bean Starch), mix into a mass. Cover with a cup. Form pills the size of beans as needed. Roll into thin strips on a clean surface, cut into rice-sized pieces with a bamboo knife. Instill into the eyes.
