It is stated: If Gallbladder heat is transmitted to the Brain, it causes frequent sneezing and Bi Yuan (Sinusitis), Brain Heat, and continuous flow of turbid nasal discharge, resembling an unceasing spring. If this condition persists without resolution, it will inevitably develop into Nu Xue (Epistaxis/Nosebleed).
The Fangfeng Tang (Saposhnikovia Decoction) is suitable for treatment.
[Fangfeng Tang]
Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae, de-rooted, 1.5 qian) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, de-core)
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) (each 1 liang)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Mix with boiling water and ingest. Take after meals, three times daily.
[Xijiao Dihuang Tang] Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage) and Wenbing (Warm Diseases). When sweating should have been induced but was not, blood stasis remains internally, leading to epistaxis or hematemesis, sallow complexion, and black stools.
This formula primarily resolves blood stasis and also treats excessive eruption of sores and rashes, using this formula to resolve them.
Xijiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, 1 liang; if unavailable, substitute with Shengma) Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, half jin) Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan, de-core, 1 liang)
Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 7.5 qian)
Chop the above ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1.5 cups of water, decoct until 1 cup remains, then take. If there is heat, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 2 liang. If the pulse is large but slow, and the abdomen feels full despite not being distended, this indicates absence of heat; do not add Huangqin.
[Shengdihuang Tang] Treats epistaxis accompanied by coma and loss of consciousness. Take 3-5 jin of Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens). If time does not permit juicing, allow the patient with epistaxis to chew and swallow it raw, absorbing 1-2 jin of juice. Stuff the dregs into the nostrils; the bleeding stops shortly thereafter. Taking the juice is even better. A woman suffered from amenorrhea for half a year. Seeing discarded dregs and juice from the road, she thought it a pity to waste them and drank several cups. Her menstruation immediately resumed. Thus, one realizes the efficacy of Dihuang (Rehmannia) in treating blood disorders.
[Dihuang San] Treats recurrent epistaxis that persists for a long time.
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) Gouqizi (Fructus Lycii) Digupi (Cortex Lycii) (equal parts)
Dry the above four herbs by baking, grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Mix with honey water and ingest. Three times daily, at any time.
[Sanhuan Buxue Tang] Treats cases where all six pulses are large but empty upon pressure, invariably presenting with facial redness, susceptibility to fright, and upper body heat. This corresponds to the pulse of the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. This indicates excess Qi and deficient Blood. Use sweet-cold heavy sedatives to drain fire and tonify Qi, to sink floating Qi. Use sweet-warm, slightly bitter-sour agents to tonify Blood. This medicine tonifies to prevent blood extravasation and quench thirst.
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens, 3 qian) Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 2 qian) Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong, 2 qian) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis)
Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri, each 1.5 qian) Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan) (each 1 qian)
Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba, 0.5 liang)
Chop the above ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 2 cups of water, decoct until 1 cup remains. Strain and take while slightly warm. Take before meals. If the radial pulse at the Cun position is present at both ends but completely absent in the middle, it is called a Kou Pulse (Kou Mai). If blood is in the Upper Jiao, or if there is epistaxis or hematemesis, Xijiao Dihuang Tang will cure it.
[Qingfei Yinzi] Treats chronic epistaxis and hematemesis. After taking this medicine, puncture the Qichong (ST30) acupoint with a three-edged needle to release blood; immediate cure follows.
Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, 10 pieces) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 qian) Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root body) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis, de-core)
Shengdihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Recens) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (each 0.5 qian)
Grind the above ingredients into coarse powder. Combine as one dose. Add 2 cups of water, decoct until 1 cup remains. Strain and take warm. At any time. Treats persistent epistaxis, or sudden epistaxis due to pre-existing heat when other medicines fail. Take a piece of white paper, fold it 8-10 layers, soak it in extremely cold water, place it on the neck, and apply a hot ironing board over it until 1-2 layers become dry. Immediate cure follows.
[Cunjinsan] Treats persistent epistaxis.
Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, raw) Tumashe (Herba Portulacae, those found on walls, each 1 liang) Huangyaozi (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae) (0.5 liang)
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose. Mix with fresh well-water and ingest. If bleeding does not stop, take again; it stops immediately.
[Maidong Yinzi] Treats Spleen and Stomach deficiency, shortness of breath and weak Qi, diminished spirit, epistaxis, and hematemesis.
Renshen (Radix Ginseng, de-rooted) Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) Dangguishen (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, root body) (each 5 fen) Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae, 5 pieces)
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (each 1 qian) Ziwan (Radix Asteris, 1.5 qian)
Chop the above ingredients, divide into two doses. Add 2 cups of water, decoct until 1 cup remains. Strain and take warm. Take before meals.
[Lize Tongqi Tang] Treats anosmia (loss of smell). Take this medicine. Avoid all cold foods, and avoid sitting, lying down, walking, or standing in places with wind and cold.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali, 4 qian) Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae)
Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) Gegen (Radix Puerariae) Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae) (each 3 qian) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 3 qian)
Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, joints not removed) Chuanjiao (Pericarpium Zanthoxyli) (each 1 qian)
Chop the above ingredients. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 2 cups of water, 3 slices of ginger, 2 jujubes, and 3 cun of scallion white. Decoct until 1 cup remains. Strain and take while slightly warm, long after meals.
[Qinghuangsan] Treats nasal polyps.
Qingfen (Calamina, 1 qian) Xionghuang (Realgar, 0.5 liang) Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 1 qian, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double kernels removed)
Shexiang (Moschus, a small amount)
In a mortar, first grind Xingren into a paste. Grind the remaining medicines finely and uniformly together. Seal in a porcelain box. For patients, regardless of depth, use a bone or bamboo chopstick at bedtime to apply a rice-grain-sized amount onto the nasal polyp. Apply once every other night. Efficacy appears within half a month.
[Qianhongsan] Treats Wind-Heat attacking the Yangming meridians, causing purple-red, stinging urticaria on the face and nose, commonly known as Lung Wind, because the Lung governs the skin and hair, and the pathology is superficial in the skin.
Boshang Liuhuang (Imported Sulfur) Baijianhui (Ash of White Alum) (each 0.5 liang)
Grind into powder. Add a small amount of Huangdan (Minium). Dye it to match the patient's complexion. Apply 0.5 qian per application. Smear with saliva. After washing and bathing, and before sleep, apply again. Concurrently take Shengma Tang and Xiaxie Qing Wan to eliminate the root cause.
