Chapter 20: What is the cause of profuse sweating followed by the development of Jing-Feng (spasm and wind) syndrome after childbirth?
The answer is: After childbirth, blood deficiency leads to loose interstices (skin pores and muscle textures), resulting in profuse sweating. If exposed to Wind pathogen which combats with the body's Qi, it transforms into Jing-Feng. "Jing" refers to lockjaw where the mouth cannot open, rigidity and straightness of the back, resembling an epileptic seizure, with head shaking, neighing sounds like a horse, opisthotonos (body bent backward), occurring ten times within a short period, with breath appearing as if cut off. One should quickly pry open the mouth and administer Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continue Life Decoction). If the condition slows down slightly, sweat will pour like rain; if wiping with hands is insufficient, it is incurable. This formula is not only for postpartum women; for any man or woman who accidentally contracts this disease, urgent administration of this medicine ensures recovery. If other medicines are taken, it will be too late.
Chapter 21 states: What is the cause of excessive lochia discharge leading to extreme deficiency generating Wind?
The answer is: Women rely primarily on Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood). Due to excessive blood loss during childbirth, Qi has no anchor, leading to cyanosis of the lips, cold flesh, sweating, closed eyes, unconsciousness, and life hanging by a thread. This is merely Wind generated from extreme deficiency. In such cases, one must urgently consume Jiwei Shangdan (Emergency Rescue Upper Pill) for its miraculous effect; treating it with Wind-dispelling methods would be a mistake.
Jiwei Shangdan (Emergency Rescue Upper Pill)
Ruxiang (Frankincense Resin, processed by placing in bamboo leaves, covering with more leaves, warming with an iron, then grinding to powder) - 5 liang
Wulingzhi (Trogopterus Dung, free of stones, ground) - 5 liang
Liuhuang (Sulfur, ground to powder) - 5 liang
Taiyin Xuanjingshi (Taiyin Crystal Stone, ground) - 5 liang
Chenpi (Aged Tangerine Peel, pith removed, chopped) - 1 liang
Sangjisheng (Taxillus Chinensis Stem) - 1 liang
Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, chopped, stir-fried with Ge Fen [Tridacna Shell Powder] until bubbling, sifted to remove shell powder) - 1 liang
Juanbai (Selaginella Tamariscina Herb, used raw) - 1 liang
First, grind the above four ingredients together uniformly. Stir-fry lightly in a stone mortar over low heat without burning. After frying, grind again to an extremely fine powder. Then add the powders of the remaining herbs. Use juice of Dihuang (Rehmannia Root) to make a paste and form pills the size of a paulownia seed.
After childbirth, take 20 pills with warm wine. Danggui wine (Angelica Sinensis wine) is also acceptable.
Furthermore, Chapter 18 states: What is the cause of postpartum Qi and Blood connecting to the Lung, leading to rebellious Qi, coughing, and a preference for lying supine?
The answer is: Within a month after childbirth, the blood vessels have not yet fully circulated. Consuming hot noodles causes stagnation, forming phlegm or Qi masses. When these manifest, Qi rushes to the heart causing chest pain, rapid breathing and coughing, alternating cold and heat in the four limbs, chest oppression, dry mouth, soreness and pain in the back and shoulders, restless dreams, physical weakness, and occasional sweating. Chest pain accompanied by amenorrhea is named Baizheng (Decayed Syndrome); abdominal pain encircling the navel with a slightly reddish complexion. If left untreated, even if temporary relief occurs, it will recur within two or three days. Urgently administer Heishen San (Black Divine Powder) for immediate recovery.
