Whenever a woman is about to give birth, emergency decoctions must be prepared in advance and labeled with their titles (names), lest they be difficult to obtain in a sudden emergency at the last moment. In the month preceding delivery, excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided. One should select a deep and quiet room according to the directions indicated in the *Chan Tu* (Chart of Childbirth) and begin using it from the first day of the ninth lunar month. The "Jie Di" method involves fumigating the north wall of the room to make the environment fragrant and clean.
For a newborn infant, one should immediately wrap a finger in cotton wool and wipe the foul matter from the infant's mouth; otherwise, if this material flows into the abdomen, it will cause various diseases later. The umbilical cord can be cut leaving a length of three cun. If there are worms in the umbilicus, they must be quickly removed to prevent them from entering the abdomen. After binding, take raw Gancao (Licorice Root, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma*) slightly longer than one cun, crush it, and boil it in one he of water to make a concentrated juice. Wrap the juice in cotton wool and apply it to the infant's mouth; this should induce the vomiting out of foul fluid, approximately half a he, which is harmless. Additionally, take fine powder of Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*) of about one zi amount, mix it with cooked honey, place it in the infant's mouth to induce vomiting, thereby expelling fright pathogens. On the third day, boil a small amount of Houtou Gu (Tiger Head Bone, *Pantherae Tigris Os*) in water, add a small amount of Zhuyedan (Pig Bile, *Sus Scrofa Gallus*), and use this mixture to bathe the infant; this ensures less fright, no sores, and prevents serious diseases. Every day, frequently expose the infant to a bright place without wind, and observe the upper palate. If a small white blister like bamboo membrane appears, quickly scrape it off with fingernails; if it grows back, scrape it off again. Except for moxibustion on the umbilical cord, do not apply fire or mugwort, lest it cause fright convulsions. For conditions such as cold and heat discomfort, night crying, non-healing umbilical sores, and Bianzheng (periodic fever/developmental changes) and other diseases, there are separate prescriptions for treatment. Herein are recorded four famous effective pediatric formulas from Assistant Instructor Liu Bao of Lujiang.
Zhu Chun Gao (Cinnabar Lip Ointment): Treats various diseases in newborns and Tai Feng disease (fetal wind).
Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*, finely ground), Peizi Yanzhi (Base Rouge, *Lapis Haematitae Rubrum*, 1 qian each), Bai Jiangcan (White Silkworm, *Bombyx Batryticatus*, seven pieces, stir-fried, remove silk mouth), Zhonghuang (Middle Yellow, *Medullae Ceratophori*, half qian, ground), Xieshao (Scorpion Tail, *Scorpio*, half piece).
Take Bai Jiangcan (White Silkworm, *Bombyx Batryticatus*) and Xieshao (Scorpion Tail, *Scorpio*), soak in one he of Bohe Zhi (Mint Juice, *Menthae Haplocalycis Herba*), boil in water until the juice is exhausted, dry by baking, grind into fine powder, mix with Peizi Yanzhi (Base Rouge, *Lapis Haematitae Rubrum*), Zhusha (Cinnabar, *Cinnabaris*), etc., and form into an ointment with Shengmi (Raw Honey, *Mel*). Apply to the infant's lips daily to induce self-vomiting, achieving efficacy.
Doukou San (Cardamom Powder): Treats summer diarrhea in infants, persistent cold dysentery, abdominal pain, emaciation, and regurgitation after eating.
Roudoukou (Nutmeg, *Myristicae Semen*, one piece, wrapped in a piece of dough-sized paste cake, roasted in ash fire while stirring constantly until red and hot, then removed, chopped, and dried).
Grind the above into fine powder. Take half a da qian per dose. For children aged seven to ten years, take one qian, mixed with warm rice drink, taken three times a day; recovery occurs within one or two days.
Xieshao San (Scorpion Tail Powder): Treats fetal wind and hundred types of conditions causing umbilical wind and shekou (mouth locking) in infants, where no cure seems possible. First, insert one zi amount of Sheng Naozi (Camphor, *Camphora*) into the umbilical center, perform moxibustion with one or seven zhuang (moxa cones); if no sensation is felt, perform two or seven zhuang, add more camphor, which is highly effective. After stabilization, administer Xieshao San (Scorpion Tail Powder).
Xieshao (Scorpion Tail, *Scorpio*, forty-nine pieces, rolled individually with Bohe Ye (Mint Leaf, *Menthae Haplocalycis Folium*), tied with silk, stir-fried in a clay pot until mint is dry), Bai Jiangcan (White Silkworm, *Bombyx Batryticatus*, forty-nine pieces, soaked in Shengjiang Zhi (Ginger Juice, *Zingiberis Recensis Succus*, stir-fried dry, remove silk mouth).
Grind the above two ingredients into powder, add half a qian of Sheng Naozi (Camphor, *Camphora*), and a little Shexiang (Musk, *Moschi Fermentum*), grind evenly. Mix with half a qian of powder using soup made from Zi Se Xiong Ji Gan (Purple Male Chicken Liver, *Galli Jecoris*), taken in two or three doses; recovery ensues.
Treating various wheezing diseases in infants.
Wu Ji Luan (Black-bone Chicken Egg, *Galli Ovoideum*, one egg), Qingfen (Calomel, *Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*, a small amount).
Make a small hole at the pointed end of the chicken egg, put Qingfen (Calomel, *Hydrargyri Chloridum Mite*) inside, stir evenly with a stick, steam the egg on rice until cooked, and feed it to the sick infant. Only one egg is needed for efficacy.
