Chen Feixia stated: When children suffer from chest and abdominal fullness, stuffiness, and intermittent pain, take one bowl of salt, stir-fry it until hot in a pan, wrap it in cloth, and massage it over the chest and abdomen from top to bottom. When it cools, reheat it and continue massaging. Salt enters the blood level (xue fen) and is most effective at softening hardness, thus relieving pain. This method can also be used to treat qi stagnation pain in both men and women, yielding effective results. From the method of releasing the exterior (shu biao) to these nine methods, none are recorded in ancient texts; they were indeed transmitted by extraordinary individuals. Having been tested through long-term experience, their miraculous efficacy is unparalleled. I record them here to share with the world and future generations.
Note: Chen Feixia's nine methods for external treatment are indeed exquisite and yield miraculous effects, but his wording is often inappropriate. Not daring to transgress, I have adopted their principles and revised the language to make it clear, aiming for readers to understand at a glance, thereby ensuring appropriateness and satisfaction. These twenty-eight methods in this volume can be used to treat children as well as adults; do not regard them as ordinary practices. (Tili Zi)
The *Records of the Grand Historian* (*Shiji*) in the biography of Bian Que mentions "An Du Wen" (Pressing and Hot Compress). The *Suoyin* commentary explains: "An" refers to massage and manipulation of the body to harmonize it. "Du Wen" refers to applying medicinal hot compresses to the diseased area. The method of hot compress (wen fa) was modeled after Bian Que, yet it is rarely used today, as people consider external treatment merely a minor skill. However, one should not know that records of external treatments in the *Ling Shu* and *Su Wen* are numerous. I have imitated these methods and practiced them, achieving miraculous effects. I dare not keep them secret or private. Whenever encountering patients with food retention and phlegm stagnation accumulating in the epigastrium (wei wan), which should be treated with acrid-opening and bitter-descending methods, if large doses of purgatives are mistakenly taken, damaging the healthy qi (zheng qi) while the retention remains, this constitutes a condition of excess pathogen and deficiency of healthy qi. In such cases, neither purgation nor digestive and dispersing formulas should be used. Instead, only external hot compress therapy is applicable: take stir-fried Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), stir-fried Lai Fu Zi (Raphani Semen), each 1 liang (approx. 30g), one large piece of Da Zao Jiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), and 5 qian (approx. 15g) of Yan Shi (Halitum), grind them into powder together, stir-fry with Bai Jiu (Baijiu) until warm, wrap tightly in green cloth, and apply hot compress while warm. As the retention gradually dissipates, the chest will naturally feel comfortable. This is a self-made formula by Tili Zi, presented here for correction by those knowledgeable in the Dao.
