Guangyi states: Whenever pushing forward, the movement must be as straight as a line, avoiding any slant or curve, lest it injure other meridians and cause complications. The ancients had the method of "push three times, return once," meaning to push forward three times and bring back once. If used for treating convulsions (Jingfeng), one should not rigidly adhere to fixed numbers; simply including a few returns during the pushing is sufficient. The hand technique involves holding four fingers tightly inside the palm, applying force with the side of the thumb to push directly. Push forward three times, or return once. Dry pushing may damage the skin. Guangyi adds: In spring and summer, use hot water; in autumn and winter, use ginger and scallion water. Dip fingers in the water to push. If there is too much water, wipe it off with the hand; if too dry, it damages the skin; if too wet, it is difficult to apply force effectively. Moderation in moisture is ideal. Xia Yuzhu says: Pushing upward is called "Qing" (Clearing), while pushing downward is called "Bu" (Tonifying). Zhou Yushu says: Pushing with straight fingers primarily serves to "Xie" (Drain), taking on the meaning of digesting food. Pushing with curved fingers primarily serves to "Bu" (Tonify), taking on the meaning of promoting appetite. For internal injuries, add a small amount of Musk (Xiangshe) mixed with water for pushing; for external infections, use ginger and scallion decoction for pushing, or combine ginger, scallion, and Musk in water for pushing. This is the most important technique within rubbing methods. Whenever using pushing, one must dip in liquid before applying.
1. Pushing Tianhe Water. Tianhe Water is located above Zongjing and below Quchi. Dip in water, push from the transverse crease to Tianhe Water; this is called "Clearing Tianhe Water." Dip in water, push from Neilaogong to Quchi; this is called "Major Pushing of Tianhe Water." Dip in water, push from Quchi to Neilaogong; this is called "Fetching Tianhe Water." All these methods use water to nourish fire, aiming for cooling and reducing fever. (Zhou Yushu) Diagram attached in Volume 3.
2. Pushing Bone Joints. From Dazhui at the lower neck, push straight down to Guiwei. Must dip in ginger and scallion soup for pushing. Treats bone and joint pain caused by Cold Damage (Shanghan). (Zhou Yushu)
3. Pushing Feishu. Feishu is located on both sides of the third thoracic vertebra, 1.5 cun away from the spine, aligned with the nipple for measurement. Must dip in ginger and scallion soup. Counter-clockwise rotation is Tonification (Bu); clockwise rotation is Drainage (Xie). Tonification and Drainage must be used in a 4:6 ratio. Treats Wind-Cold. (Zhou Yushu)
4. Pushing from Banmen to Da Hengwen. Dip in soup and push. Can induce vomiting and stop diarrhea. (Zhou Yushu)
5. Pushing from Da Hengwen to Banmen. Dip in soup and push. Can induce diarrhea and stop vomiting. (Zhou Yushu)
6. Pushing San Guan. Dip in ginger and scallion soup, push from Yangchi to Quchi. It has a warming nature; patients with cold syndromes should push this frequently. (Zhou Yushu) If San Guan is considered to be between Yiwofeng and Jiashi externally, pushing up to Quchi, Xia Yuzhu advocates this view, which is correct.
7. Pushing Liu Fu. Dip in boiling water, push from Quchi to Yinchi. It has a cooling nature; patients with heat syndromes should push this frequently. (Zhou Yushu) If Liu Fu is considered to be on the palmar surface between Jiashi and Zongjing, pushing from Quchi to Zongjing, Xia Yuzhu advocates this view, which is also correct.
8. Pushing Gan Mu. Gan Mu refers to the tip of the index finger. Dip in soup, push laterally into the Tiger's Mouth (Hukou). It harmonizes Qi and generates blood. (Zhou Yushu)
9. Pushing Fen Yangchi. From the center of the infant's dorsal wrist root, push leftward dipping in ginger and scallion soup. Treats dry lips, drooping head, cold limbs, stiff neck, staring eyes, and cold breath exhalation. (Zhou Yushu)
10. Pushing Fen Yinchi. From the center of the infant's dorsal wrist root, push rightward dipping in ginger and scallion soup. Use the thumb. Divide into Yang and Yin equally. Treatment method is the same as the previous item. (Zhou Yushu)
11. Pushing Si Hengwen. Si Hengwen is located at the middle phalanx of the four fingers on the dorsal hand. Dip in ginger and scallion soup and push. Harmonizes upper and lower Qi and Blood. Treats emaciation, limb twitching, head tilting to either side, damp-heat in intestines and stomach, refusal to nurse, and eyes rolling upward. (Anmo Jing)
12. Pushing Waiguan and Jiashi. These acupoints are located behind Yiwofeng at the base of the volar wrist. Dip in ginger and scallion soup and push. Treats vomiting, diarrhea, and tendon spasms. (Anmo Jing)
13. Pushing Houxi. Houxi is located posterior to the four fingers on the palm. First use pinching (Qia), then dip in soup. Pushing upward is Drainage (Xie); pushing downward is Tonification (Bu). Treats red and scanty urination, and tonifies Kidney Meridian deficiency. (Anmo Jing)
14. Pushing Banmen. (Acupoint note above.) Dip in soup. Pushing outward reduces fever; pushing inward treats limb convulsions. (Anmo Jing)
15. Pushing Finger San Guan. San Guan is located at the three segments of the index finger, divided into Yin, Mao, and Chen gates. Dip in ginger and scallion soup and push. Promotes circulation of Qi and Blood and induces sweating. (Guangyi)
16. Pushing Pi Tu. Pi Tu is located at the tip of the thumb. Dip in soup and bend the infant's finger while pushing for Tonification (Bu), which awakens consciousness. Straighten the finger while pushing for Clearing (Qing), which promotes appetite. (Zhou Yushu)
17. Pushing Wu Jing. Wu Jing refers to the tips of the five fingers. Dip in soup and push each straight upward. Rotating clockwise is Tonification (Bu); rotating counter-clockwise is Drainage (Xie). Generally, apply based on differentiation of Cold/Heat and Deficiency/Excess. (Guangyi)
18. Pushing Sanyinjiao. (Acupoint note above.) Dip in soup and push downward to treat Acute Convulsion (Ji Jing); push upward to treat Chronic Convulsion (Man Jing). (Guangyi)
19. Pushing Xin Huo. Xin Huo refers to the tip of the middle finger. Dip in soup and push. Induces sweating and reduces fever. Pinching it also promotes diuresis. (Guangyi)
20. Pushing Fei Jin. Fei Jin refers to the tip of the ring finger. Dip in soup and push. Its nature is warm and unblocking. Coughs and resolves phlegm. (Guangyi)
21. Pushing Shen Shui. Shen Shui refers to the tip of the little finger. Dip in soup and push. Reduces internal organ heat and promotes diuresis. If urine is short and frequent, Tonification (Bu) is appropriate. (Guangyi)
22. Pushing Middle Finger Joint. Dip in soup. Pushing inward treats Heat; pushing outward drains. (Guangyi)
23. Pushing Kangong. Kangong is above both eyebrows. Dip in soup and push outward from the glabella to both sides. Treats external Wind-Cold. (Guangyi) Diagram attached in Volume 3.
24. Pushing Zan Zhu. Zan Zhu is below Tingting. Dip in soup and push straight upward alternately from the glabella. (Guangyi) Diagram attached in Volume 3.
25. Pushing Weiwuan. Pushing downward from the throat stops vomiting; pushing upward from Zhongwan induces vomiting. Both require dipping in soup. (Zhou Yushu)
26. Pushing Navel. Dip in soup and push downward toward the lower abdomen to induce diarrhea; push upward from the lower abdomen to the navel for Tonification (Bu). (Zhou Yushu)
27. Sequence of Facial Pushing. Use the right thumb dipped in ginger and scallion soup to push from the glabella to Ximen 36 times. Then use both thumbs dipped in soup to push outward from Tianting to both foreheads, as well as Taiyang and Dayin, 36 times each. Then pinch Yintang 5 times and Ximen 36 times. Next, use the flat of the thumb to rub circularly left and right, 36 times each. Pinch Baihui 36 times. Shan Gen, Bi Zhun, Ren Zhong, and Cheng Jiang each receive 36 pinches, followed by 36 rubs at each point. Finally, massage the governing points accordingly. This naturally eliminates wind-phlegm and dispels cold and heat. Its subtlety lies in adapting to the Zang-Fu organs, circulating Qi and Blood, and treating meridians, thereby preventing blockages. (Zhou Yushu)
28. Sequence of Facial and Hand Pushing. Push Kangong 24 times, push Zan Zhu 24 times, rotate Taiyang 24 times, rotate the high bone behind the ear 24 times, pinch Cheng Jiang once, pinch both cheeks once, pinch both Tinghui once, pinch both Taiyang once, pinch the glabella once, pinch the human ear once, lift both ear tips three times, push Tiger's Mouth San Guan, push the five finger tips, rotate Bagua, divide Yin and Yang, push San Guan and Liu Fu, use the ten major techniques, rotate Dou Zhou. This is a fundamental yet difficult massage method. (Guangyi)
Note: Pinching (Qia) enters via the nail, serving as a substitute for acupuncture. Pinching causes pain, temporarily stopping Qi and Blood flow, followed immediately by rubbing to restore circulation and relax meridians. Pushing requires force, hence the need for liquid lubrication to prevent skin injury. Pinching derives from Pressing (An). Pushing derives from Rubbing (Mo). Twisting (Cuo), Shaking (Yao), Rubbing (Rou), and Rotating (Yun) are lighter techniques compared to Pushing, all deriving from Mo. Since Pressing is less frequent than Rubbing, the key to mastery lies in promoting free flow and unblocking. (Tili Zi)
