Swelling and pain in the elbows and knees, with thinning of the arms, is named He Xi Feng (Crane's Knee Wind). It is so named because its appearance resembles the knee joint of a crane. In some cases, only both knees are swollen, with skin that is tight and contracted, unable to flex or extend, while the calves are emaciated and thin; this is commonly known as Gu Chui Feng (Drumstick Wind). All these conditions result from the flow and accumulation of Wind-Cold-Dampness pathogens in the meridians.
(Da Fang Feng Tang [Great Wind-Expelling Decoction] from *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang*): Treats Cold-Dampness cold qi causing swelling and pain in both knees, inability to flex and extend, as well as softness and pain in the feet and knees after dysentery, making walking difficult, known as Li Feng (Dysentery Wind). This decoction expels wind, regulates qi, invigorates blood, strengthens sinews and bones, restoring normal mobility.
Ingredients: Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex) stir-fried with ginger juice.
Take two cups of water, seven slices of fresh ginger, and one jujube. Decoct until reduced to eight-tenths volume, and take warm.
Yi Fang Qi Wan (Yifangqi Pill): Treats He Xi Feng (Crane's Knee Wind) and diseases characterized by contraction of the waist and knees.
Ingredients: Yi Fang Qi (whole pair, one set), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, raw), Bai Fu Zi (Typhonii Rhizoma), A Wei (Asafoetida), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus, each 1 liang), Ru Xiang (Olibanum), Mo Yao (Myrrhae Resina, each 7 qian), An Xi Xiang (Styrax, ground with Tao Ren, 1 liang).
The above nine ingredients are stir-fried together with child's urine and two sheng of wine until cooked, then allowed to cool.
Add Lou Lu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Wei Ling Xian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma, each 1 liang).
Grind all the above medicines into a fine powder. Make pills using refined honey, sized like弹子 (large pellets). Take one pill per dose, dissolved in wine.
Yu Li Wan (Prunus Pills): Treats inability to flex and extend hands and feet after dysentery. Or when Ma Dou Zheng (Mahu Dou Syndrome/Smallpox-like illness) spreads, causing urgency and tension in the sinews and vessels of the hands and feet.
Ingredients: Yu Li Ren (Pruni Semen), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) stir-fried with vinegar, in equal proportions.
Grind the above into powder. Form pills using wine paste, sized like wutong seeds (small pellets). Take 50 pills per dose. Administer with decocted Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit) soup or wine.
Jia Wei Xiao Xu Ming Tang (Modified Minor Continuation Life Decoction): Treats He Xi Feng (Crane's Knee Wind) where walking is impaired.
To Xiao Xu Ming Tang, add Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma), Chuan Lian Zi (Meliae Fructus), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Gan Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit, dried).
Do not use fresh ginger. Decoct with water. Wash the affected area with the bottom of the bowl, add a small amount of She Xiang (Moschus), pour the medicine in, mix evenly, and take. After taking dozens of doses, add Wu Ji San (Five Accumulations Powder) and decoct together to achieve recovery.
