The Prefect of Jiaozhou, Du Xie, died from poisoning. Dong Feng administered Taiyi San (Great One Powder) mixed with water into Du Xie's mouth, and after a short while, he revived. Du Xie claimed that when he first died, a carriage door opened directly into a place where he was placed in an earthen pit and sealed with soil. Shortly thereafter, he heard the arrival of the Envoy of Taiyi who came to retrieve Du Xie; thus, the earth pit was opened, and Du Xie emerged.
Chen Deng, the Grand Administrator of Guangling, suffered from abdominal fullness and discomfort, a red face, and inability to eat. He sent for Hua Tuo. Upon arrival, Hua Tuo said, "There are parasites forming in your abdomen, likely caused by consuming raw fish or meat." He then prescribed a decoction, after which Chen Deng vomited approximately three sheng of worms. The heads of these worms were all red, and half their bodies resembled raw minced meat.
In ancient times, there was a patient whose diet remained normal, but upon onset, he exhibited symptoms resembling mania, with a cyan-yellow complexion and lower abdominal distension similar to pregnancy. Physicians found his pulse and symptoms anomalous and difficult to treat. Suddenly, an old man from the mountains said, "I heard that in the sixth year of the Kaihuang era, someone in Baqiao suffered from this illness. It is believed to be contracted from eating celery near water on the eighth day of the third lunar month. Those knowledgeable in such matters stated: 'This is a dragon disease.' Because dragons swim over the celery, accidental ingestion causes the illness." They subsequently used Han Shi Tang (Cold Food Syrup), five ge per dose, taken several times. Afterward, the patient vomited an object small yet resembling a two-headed dragon. Patients following this treatment achieved recovery.
Li Yanji, the nephew of Cui Yaofeng, the Defense Commissioner of Jinzhou, suddenly developed a small sore on the upper eyelid of his left eye. It gradually enlarged to the size of a duck egg, with a root as thin as a string, causing him to keep his eye closed constantly. Cui Yaofeng had him drink alcohol until heavily intoxicated, then performed surgical excision. Once the wound was opened, a yellow sparrow flew out chirping.
There are bizarre diseases in the world that remain inexplicable. In the past, Lü Jinshu, while serving as Zhi Gao and administering Yingzhou, suddenly fell ill. His body continuously shrunk, and despite medical intervention, he could not be cured; at the time of death, he was merely the size of a child. Ancient people never suffered from this ailment, and it remained unrecognized by anyone.
At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Lü Fu from Siming, courtesy name Cangzhou Weng, was deeply versed in medical arts. Xiao Yunquan, a Daoist priest from Linchuan, consulted Lü Fu regarding his condition of seeing objects upside down (inverted vision). When asked about the cause, Xiao replied, "Once I drank heavily and vomited everything I had consumed, then slept soundly until dawn, after which I contracted this illness." Lü Fu examined his pulse, finding the left Guan position floating and rapid, and informed him, "Excessive drinking followed by severe vomiting has caused chaotic qi movement in the Upper Jiao, leading to the inversion of the Gallbladder organ, hence the inverted vision. This is neither an internal nor external cause; the treatment method should involve inducing vomiting again to correct the position of the gallbladder." Consequently, he prepared Lili (Veratrum Viride Rhizome) and Gudi (Melon Stalk) ground into coarse powder, decocted in water, and instructed the patient to take it all at once in the early morning, stopping when vomiting occurred. After vomiting ceased, his vision returned to normal. (*Jiuling Shanfang Ji*)
