凡物哽者,盖以食入喉而物不顺,致物刺住而不能下,推之以理,反而上出则为顺

To treat throat obstruction (hou bi), have the patient flex and curl the second joint of their thumb, quickly open their mouth, and bite down firmly and persistently. This will facilitate the smooth flow of Qi, disperse any bleeding, and reduce swelling.
Chen Wuyue stated: The methods for treating foreign bodies stuck in the throat all follow the principle of "treating like with like." For instance, using bones from jackals or otters to treat fish bone impaction, magnetite (Ci Shi) to treat needle or iron impaction, hair ash to treat hair impaction, and civet or tiger to treat various bone impactions; each follows its respective category.
In cases of general foreign body impaction, it is generally because food enters the throat irregularly, causing an object to get stuck and unable to descend. Analyzing this rationally, reversing the direction to expel it upwards aligns with physiological順 (shun, smoothness/compliance). Therefore, the treatment should employ emesis (yong tu), taking advantage of the upward movement of food during vomiting to push the object out. This is compliant with the disease process and easy to achieve, similar to removing a thorn. However, if the thorn is deeply embedded and one insists on pushing it down, not only is it contrary to reason and circumstances, but prolonged delay will cause gradual swelling of the pharynx and larynx, embedding the object deeper. Once the food in the abdomen is digested, even if emesis is attempted, there is no substance left to push the object down, leading to an inability to eat. Such procrastination often leads to untreatable conditions.
One prescription: For bone impaction that cannot be expelled, grind Amomum villosum (Sha Ren) and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gan Cao) into powder, wrap in cotton, hold in the mouth, and slowly swallow saliva. Over time, it will be expelled with phlegm.
*Gu Jin Mi Yan* formula: For bones stuck in the throat for six to seven days, burn carp scales to ash, mix with water, and ingest. The bone will be expelled. If not expelled, take another dose.
One prescription: For fish bone impaction, chew a small amount of white leek until soft, tie it with a thin string, swallow the leaf into the throat until it reaches the obstruction, and pull it out. The fish bone will come out with it; this is verified effective.
One prescription: For fish bone impaction, take one cup of water, silently write the character "Dragon" (Long) over the water while looking at your left eye, then drink it. Within two cups, the bone will descend. For children with impaction, adults can perform the above method of writing in water and drinking it, which is miraculous.
One prescription: Use red fruit of *Castanea mollissima* (Shan Li Guo, i.e., Chinese chestnut/hawthorn-like fruit), specifically those with a single root growing downward. Crush together with the root of *Hemerocallis citrina* (Yu Zan Hua) to extract natural juice. Pour into the throat using a bamboo tube. Do not let it touch the teeth, as it will dissolve them.
One prescription: For accidentally ingested fish bones that remain long-term, blow powder of *Gleditsia sinensis* (Zao Jiao) into the nose to induce sneezing, which expels the impaction.
Chen's formula: For chicken bone impaction, use chicken broth to administer throat-clearing medicine, or swallow a large piece of maltose (Yi Tang) whole.
Another prescription: Burn civet bone to ash, take a small amount mixed with liquid; effective.
One prescription: For fish splinter impaction, scratch the lower throat with otter claws so the bone descends naturally. Alternatively, hold otter bone in the mouth, and the bone will descend. Another method involves chewing *Impatiens balsamina* (Jin Feng Hua) seeds and holding them in the mouth; if seeds are unavailable, use the root, crush and squeeze juice to ingest.
One method: Place a fish bone on top of the head; upon coughing, the object will be expelled. Another method: Take the bone from the same type of fish, toss it repeatedly behind the back with both hands, and the object will immediately be expelled.
*Waitai Miyao*: For fish bone impaction, recite the name of the cormorant (Lu Chi) seven times, then swallow with water.
Another prescription: Crush *Hemerocallis citrea* (Xuan Cao) root to extract juice and swallow; immediate effect.
Another prescription: Grind *Rosa multiflora* (Qiang Wei) root into powder, mix with water, and take one cubic inch measure (Fang Cun Bi).
Another prescription: For various bone impactions, crush wild ramie root (*Boehmeria nivea*, Ye Zhu Gen) into a paste, form a pill the size of a longan flesh, and swallow. If choked by a chicken bone, swallow with chicken soup; if by a fish bone, swallow with fish soup.
Another prescription: Crush *Broussonetia papyrifera* (Chu Shi Zi) fruits to extract juice and ingest.
*Yan Yi* formula: For fish bone impaction, use olive (Gan Lan). It tastes astringent initially but becomes sweet after chewing; swallow the juice.
*Dou Men Fang*: For bone impaction, grind deer horn (Lu Jiao) into powder, hold in the mouth, and swallow with saliva.
Another prescription: For hair impaction, burn an old wooden comb to ash, mix with wine, and ingest.
Danzhu's formula: For sharp pain in the abdomen caused by swallowed fish bones, decoct *Evodia rutaecarpa* (Wu Zhu Yu) soup, drink one cup, and the bone will soften and pass. Alternatively, drink half a cup of good rice vinegar to soften the bone and stop pain.
One prescription: For wheat awn penetrating the throat, hang a goose upside down, collect the saliva flowing from its mouth into a bowl, and drink a small amount; the awn will descend with the saliva.
One prescription: For bamboo sliver penetrating the throat, use a pole from an old bamboo fence, decoct in fast-flowing water, and drink the soup.
