Chukou (mouth contraction) is the most critical condition. The treatment principle prioritizes unblocking and promoting free flow; administering Chensha Gao (Cinnabar Paste) often leads to recovery. If this condition appears within one *la* (a lunar month of thirty days) after birth, it is particularly severe.
Chensha Jiangcan San (Cinnabar and Silkworm Powder): Treats Chukou in newborns.
Ingredients: Zhensha (Cinnabaris, processed by water flotation, 5 fen), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, straight specimens, remove green heads and stir-fry, 1 qian), Shetui (Cocoon of Bombyx, stir-fried, 1 qian), Shexiang (Moschus, ground, 0.5 fen).
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take a small amount, mix with honey, and apply to the lips and oral cavity.
Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction): Treats infants within their first month suffering from fever due to excessive fetal shock qi, as well as Qifeng (umbilical wind) and Chukou.
Ingredients: Longdancao (Radix Gentianae), Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis), Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, stir-fried), Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, stir-fried), Fuling (Poria, each 5 fen), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, honey-fried, 5 fen), Danglang (Scarabaeus, two beetles, remove wings and legs and roast), Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang, wrapped in wet paper and roasted in fire).
Usage: Grind the above ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Administer with decoction of pitted jujubes; alternatively, add Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) and Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) for decoction before mixing with the powder.
Chuo Feng San (Wind-Grasping Powder): Treats Chukou in children.
Ingredients: Chijiao Wugong (Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans, half a strip, roasted), Gouteng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis, 1 fen), Zhusha (Cinnabaris), Quanxie Shao (Scorpio tip, 1 qian each), Shexiang (Moschus, 1 zi).
Usage: Grind into powder. For each dose, take 1 zi, administered with Zhuli (Nodus Bambusae in Taenia juice).
*Nshi Bingyuan* (Source Book of Chenmi's Diseases) states: When a fetus is in the womb, if the mother consumes hot-natured foods, heat enters the zang-fu organs. After birth, heat-toxin accumulates, covering the mouth and tongue with lesions resembling millet grains, preventing the infant from opening the mouth. This condition is named Koujin (lockjaw).
*Shenghui Fang* (Prescriptions of Holy Empathy) states: Newborns must be guarded against three diseases: one is Koujin (lockjaw), two is Chukou (mouth contraction), and three is Qifeng (umbilical wind); all are acute conditions. Among them, Koujin is the most severe. If the infant survives past one *la* (month), they may escape this disease. Observe for tightness of the jaw, inability to suckle milk, gradually diminishing cries, and foaming at the mouth; these indicate this syndrome. Urgently examine the infant's palate for white spots. First, scrape them off with fingernails, then administer medicine.
To treat Koujin and Jingfeng syndromes, if white spots are observed on the palate, gently puncture them with fingernails, then administer Dingming San or Chensha Quanxie San.
If Koujin persists and various medicines fail, grind Sheng Nanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis Cum Bile) into an extremely fine powder, mix with a small amount of Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum). Dip a finger in Shengjiang Zhi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens juice) and rub it on the upper gum roots; the mouth will open immediately. Although Qifeng, Chukou, and Jingkou present differently, their pathological origin is identical. Generally, internal qi stagnation and blockage occur. It is advisable to administer Danshichiji (Juncus Decoctio) to expel fetal toxins. *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: If a child exhibits high-pitched breathing and slight fever, purgative methods must be employed immediately. If not purged promptly, major complications will arise, making treatment difficult. In such cases, Zishuang Wan (Purple Frost Pills) should be administered according to dosage.
