Ancient texts record: When going out in the morning, holding a small amount of baked *Zingiberis Rhizoma* (Baked Ginger) in the mouth can dispel miasma and stimulate appetite. Furthermore, upon waking up on an empty stomach in the morning, one should not see corpses; inhaling the odor of a corpse into the nose will cause white coating on the tongue and halitosis. If one must see it, it is advisable to drink a little wine to mitigate the effect.
The True Man says: When wishing to rise at dawn, step out of bed with the left foot first; this ensures no disaster for the day, expelling evil and avoiding malignancy. If one can practice the "Seven Star Steps," it enables longevity and joy.
In the early morning, often speak of good deeds; upon hearing bad news, spit three times towards the direction from which it came for good luck. Additionally, do not rage in the morning, do not get heavily drunk at night, and do not travel far.
Medical classics state: At dawn, human Qi begins to generate; at noon, Yang Qi is at its peak; in the evening, Yang Qi has already weakened, and the Qi gates (pores) close. Therefore, at night, one should gather and repel evil, without disturbing the sinews and bones, and without exposure to fog and dew. Violating the rhythms of these three times leads to physical exhaustion and debility.
Walking at night while stroking one's hair prevents essence-evil from approaching. Frequently clicking the teeth kills ghostly evils. Additionally, when sleeping at night, if the two feet are extended and bent without being parallel, one will not have nocturnal emissions. The True Man says: If one has a nightmare, there is no need to speak of it. In the morning, face east towards water and chant: "Nightmares attach to grass and trees, good dreams become pearls and jade." This is auspicious.
There is advice for those entering Guangling (Lingnan region): One should not go to bed hungry in the morning, nor overly full in the evening. This applies to climate imbalance, not only when entering Guangling.
Ancient texts record: If one suddenly sees bizarre or anomalous phenomena, strongly suppress any sense of strangeness; this is auspicious.
The official residence of Yifangchuan was full of demons. Someone reported: "A ghost messenger is fanning." The reply was: "It is because it is hot, hence the action." Another reported: "A ghost is beating a drum." The reply was: "Give him the drumstick."
Fan Wenzheng Gong (Fan Zhongyan), while reading and sitting at night, had a large-headed monster approach him. Fan wrote on the monster's face with a brush, saying: "Your face is very large, difficult to deceive Fan Zhongyan." These two gentlemen did not treat the strange as strange, and the strangeness vanished naturally; this is worthy of emulation.
Using animal fat to light a lamp means the human spirit is not under the blood-light. For any wound caused by a blade, one must absolutely not drink water, lest the bleeding ceaselessly lead to death. If bleeding does not stop, urgently wipe the wound with cloth dipped in hot water, or soak it in cold water; chewing *Perillae Folium* (Perilla Leaf) to stop bleeding is miraculous.
*Suo Sui Lu* records: When taking down a flute hanging on the wall, do not blow into it casually, for fear of centipedes. Patriarch Liu Fuzhen, upon receiving a summons, saw a shopkeeper lying on the ground wailing in terror upon waking early. He noticed a blowing-flute nearby and knew a centipede had entered her abdomen. He pierced a pig, poured its blood into her mouth, and she vomited out the centipede and recovered.
Ancient wells and deep pits often contain toxic gases and should not be entered lightly. This is especially severe in the sixth month. First, drop goose or duck feathers to test; if they spin but do not sink, it indicates toxicity, and entry is forbidden. It is also said: Mountains have caves; treasure collectors should only enter in the second and ninth months. In other months, the mountain's Qi closes and changes, leading to death.
