四气调神论曰∶夫四时阴阳者,万物之根本也。所以圣人春夏养阳,秋冬养阴,与万物浮沉

The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: The three months of spring are called "promoting the old and generating the new." One should go to bed late and rise early, fostering life without killing. Violating this will injure the Liver, leading to cold transformations in summer, with insufficient support for the growth phase.
It also says: If wind pathogen is injured in spring, diarrhea with undigested food (Sun Xie) will inevitably occur in summer.
There is a saying: During the transition between spring and summer, if dampness prevails due to rainy weather, or if excessive drinking occurs, it may cause Wind-Dampness disease, characterized by spontaneous sweating, heavy body, difficulty turning over, and difficult urination. Other treatments will be ineffective; only Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is best.
The *Huangdi Neijing* states: The three months of summer are called "flourishing and beautiful." One should go to bed late and rise early, keeping the mind free from anger, allowing Qi to vent. Violating this will injure the Heart, leading to Malaria in autumn, with insufficient support for the harvesting phase.
Tao Hongjing said: Among the four seasons, summer is the most difficult to regulate. Hidden Yin resides inside, causing cold abdomen and loose stools. Kidney-tonifying agents cannot be omitted; slightly cold foods should not be consumed.
Medical texts state: In the season of summer, the human spirit is dispersed. Heart Qi is prosperous while Kidney Qi declines, transforming into water, which condenses in autumn and solidifies in winter. Therefore, regardless of age, one should consume warm-natured foods to avoid Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder), keep the abdomen warm, and prevent various diseases.
Summer ice should only be used to cool drinks/food, not crushed and eaten directly. Cold and heat clashing in the abdomen will cause illness. After Summer Solstice approaching Autumn Equinox, one must be cautious with fatty foods, pastries, swollen items, and fried dough sticks. These conflict greatly with wine, beverages, melons, and fruits, which is why many illnesses arise from them.
Tao Hongjing said: Cold pillows and beds are displeasing to the heart. Sleeping on cold objects severely damages the eyes.
Medical texts state: Do not sleep outdoors in summer dew, as it causes skin tinea or facial wind. Do not sit immediately on stones heated by the summer sun; heat generates sores, and cold leads to Hernia. Excessive exposure to wind while sweating in extreme heat is inadvisable. Upon returning from midday, do not wash the face with cold water, as it causes eye diseases. For those with latent heat, drinking water immediately or suppressing it with cold items can be fatal. In May and June, stagnant water in marshes often contains fish and turtles; drinking it causes Jia masses (abdominal lumps).
The *Huangdi Neijing* states: The three months of autumn are called "mature and peaceful." One should go to bed early and rise early, keeping the mind tranquil. Violating this will injure the Lungs, leading to diarrhea with undigested food in winter, with insufficient support for the storage phase.
Medical texts state: If dampness is injured in autumn, it rises upward causing cough, developing into Wei-Jue syndrome (Flaccidity and Reversal). Also, do not bathe on the day of Start of Autumn, as it makes skin rough and causes white scales. After August 1st, use mild fire to warm the feet; do not let the lower body become cold.
The *Huangdi Neijing* states: The three months of winter are called "closing and storing." Water freezes and earth cracks; do not disturb Yang. Go to bed early and rise late, waiting for sunlight. Move away from cold towards warmth; do not allow skin pores to open and sweat. Violating this will injure the Kidneys, leading to Wei-Jue syndrome in spring, with insufficient support for the generation phase.
Medical texts state: If sudden extreme heat occurs in winter, do not accept it, as seasonal diseases arise from this. It also says: If cold is injured in winter, Warm diseases will inevitably occur in spring. In winter, Heaven and Earth close and store Qi; labor should not cause sweating with a cold back. Although near a fire in winter cold, do not let body heat accumulate; roasting on fire is unnecessary. If roasting, stop when hands are warm. Otherwise, blood is damaged, causing Heat in the Five Centers (palms, soles, chest), as extremities correspond to the Heart. Walking barefoot in heavy snow, then immediately washing with hot water or drinking hot wine, may cause foot necrosis/drop. Furthermore, upon returning from cold, before cold resolves, do not immediately drink soup or eat hot foods.
The *Suwen: Treatise on Regulating Spirit According to the Four Seasons* states: The Yin and Yang of the four seasons are the root of all things. Thus, sages nourish Yang in spring and summer, and nourish Yin in autumn and winter, floating and sinking with all things in the gate of growth. Violating the root destroys the foundation and ruins true essence. Therefore, Yin-Yang and the four seasons are the beginning and end of all things, the root of life and death. Violating them brings disaster; following them prevents severe illness; this is called attaining the Dao. Thus, the *Shanggu Tianzhen Lun* states: The wise person follows and regulates Yin-Yang, distinguishes the four seasons, aligning ancient and modern paths, thereby extending lifespan to its limit.
