Mu Zhi (Wood Ganoderma) is formed when the resin from pine branches seeps into the ground. After a thousand years, it transforms into Poria Cocos (Fuling). After ten thousand years, small trees grow on its upper surface, named "Mu Weixi Zhi" (Wood Weixi Mushroom). It glows at night, feels very smooth to the touch, does not burn when ignited, and wearing it can ward off military disasters. If you tie a chicken with this mushroom and place it in a cage with twelve other chickens, stand twelve steps away, and shoot twelve arrows, the other chickens will be injured, but the chicken tied with Weixi Zhi will remain unharmed. Collect it from the "Sheng Men" (Life Gate), dry it in the shade during the Six Jia days for one hundred days, grind it into powder, and take one Fang Cun Bi (a square-inch measure) each time, three times a day. Consuming one unit is said to extend life by three thousand years.
Shen Xian Er Song Shi Dan (Immortal Pine Seed Pill): Collect pine seeds (Song Shi) in July; if missed, they fall and are difficult to gather. Remove the woody skin, pound them into a paste, and take an amount the size of a chicken egg each time, three times a day. After taking it for one hundred days, the body becomes light. After three hundred days, one can walk five hundred li per day and practice Gu Yu (grain avoidance). Long-term use leads to ascending to immortality. Drink water when thirsty, or mix with refined pine resin.
Collect pine nuts on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month; if missed, they fall and cannot be used. Take one Fang Cun Bi, three to four times a day. Another method says take San He (three he), and after one hundred days the body becomes light, and after three hundred days one walks five hundred li daily, practicing Gu Yu, leading to ascension with long-term use. Drink water when thirsty, or take with pine resin. If made into pills the size of Chinese parasol tree seeds, take ten pills each time.
Pine resin (Song Zhi) from Zhending is considered the best. Place it in a fine cloth bag or boil it in boiling clear water; those that float on the surface are selected, scooped up with a new bamboo sieve, and thrown into fresh water. Discard any that do not float after prolonged boiling. Add raw Bai Fu Ling (White Poria) powder (unprocessed), simply scrape off the skin, pound and sieve into a fine powder, mix well, and take three Qian Bi every morning. Hold in the mouth, rinse with a little warm water, then brush teeth with pine resin as usual, and swallow with a little warm water after brushing. Rinse as usual. This method greatly strengthens teeth, preserves youthfulness, and darkens beard hair.
Sift refined pine resin and mix with honey, store in an inner barrel, avoiding ventilation. Take one piece the size of a chess piece (Bo Qi, 2 cun long, 1 cun square) daily, three times a day, gradually increasing monthly. Taking one jin prevents hunger and extends life. Alternatively, mix with strong wine and white honey to form a syrup, taking one to half a jin daily. For collecting pine resin, the natural accumulation on old pine bark is the finest. The resin found under broken roots where sunlight does not reach is called Yin Zhi (Yin Resin) and is even better. Only east of Mount Heng, where large pines are thirty to forty zhou in circumference, is there abundant resin. Another method: In May, incise the sunny side of large pines so the resin flows downward; twenty-four trees yield half sheng each. Also, boiling old joint roots yields usable resin. The *Xian Jing* (Immortal Classic) states: Enter the shady side of Mount Heng in March to collect pine resin unseen by sunlight, refine and consume it. Even in small amounts, consistent use allows enduring cold and heat after one hundred days, and nourishing the five Zang organs after two hundred days. Five years of use brings a vision of Xi Wang Mu (Queen Mother of the West). The *Xian Jing* also states: Among the 365 mountains born of stones, valleys filled with edible substances contain only pine resin buried in soil. This valley lies directly east of Mount Heng ridge, 480 li away, specifically northeast of Heng Ling. Passing south, enter the valley for fifty li to the cave's end, where a stone city named He (Crane) exists. There are large stones over forty zhang high, resembling white pines in autumn, with small caves two zhang below the pines. Entering eastward, red cinnabar stones are edible. In the southern shady areas, there are over thirty large pines, thirty-plus zhou in circumference, unseen by sunlight, all suitable for collection. To consume pine resin, if practicing Gu Yu, take three liang; if hungry, eat more until full, up to one jin. Without Gu Yu, take one liang, always before eating, waiting for the medicinal effect to dissipate before consuming food; otherwise, discomfort and vomiting may occur. Long-term use extends life and eliminates diseases.
Another prescription: Ten jin of Song Zhi (Pine Resin), three jin of Song Shi (Pine Seeds), three jin of Bai Shi (Cupressus Seeds), and five jin of Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum). Sift these four ingredients, mix with honey, and take. Make pills the size of tung seeds, thirty pills per dose, divided into three servings. After more than one hundred days, hunger ceases. One year of use restores centenarians to the vigor of thirty- or forty-year-olds; long-term use prevents death.
Another prescription: Collect Song Zhi (Pine Resin) on the Summer Solstice, consume one sheng daily, abstaining from other foods, drinking water as desired. Long-term use ensures lifelong youth. In Henan Ruzhou mountains, cut pines in shady areas, place in vessels, steam, and collect flowing ointment. Refine to remove bitter odor, mix with white honey, consume one sheng daily. After two months, change to pill size of a bullet, drink water when thirsty, prevents aging, collection time is flexible.
Another prescription: Five jin of Song Zhi (Pine Resin) and three jin of Yang Zhi (Sheep Fat). First refine Song Zhi until melted, add Yang Zhi. Take one Bo Qi-sized piece daily, prevents hunger, long-term use leads to immortality.
Another prescription: Seven jin of Bai Song Zhi (White Pine Resin), five jin of Bai La (Beeswax) refined three times, three jin of Bai Mi (White Honey), and three jin of Fu Ling Fen (Poria Powder). Steam these four ingredients together for a duration equivalent to emptying a stone-dou measure. Make pills the size of tung seeds, take ten pills. When hungry, take one pill daily, abstain from all food, allow only one round of wine consumption. Observe fasting rules, chew Wu Xiang (Five Spices), boil in water for one boil, strain, and drop medicine into the boiling water. To summon Shen Nv (Divine Maiden), extract juice from Mao Gen (Imperata Rhizome), mix with it, steam and consume; the Divine Maiden will arrive.
