Liu Zongyuan wrote in his essay "Scolding the Corpse Worms": People all have three corpse worms residing in their abdomens, watching for hidden and subtle mistakes, and recording them. On Gengshen days, taking advantage of people's deep sleep, they go out to slander humans before the Emperor to seek offerings. Because of this, people often suffer from blame, illnesses, plagues, and premature death. Medical classics also state that (these worms) can communicate with ghosts and spirits, often attracting external pathogens to cause harm. Their manifestations vary: some are heavy and silent, not knowing exactly where the pain is, yet feeling disgust everywhere; some experience abdominal pain and distension; some have bulging masses; some have spasms pulling on the waist and spine; some have confused mental states. The symptoms are diverse, largely similar but with minor differences.
"Geng Zhi" records: Zhao Zishan, courtesy name Jinggao, resided at Tianwang Temple in Shaowu Commandery, suffering greatly from tapeworms (Cestoda). A doctor advised him to stop drinking alcohol. However, due to his long-standing habit, he found it impossible to quit. One night, he got drunk at an outer room and returned home past midnight. His mouth was dry and tongue parched. In a hurry, there was no hot soup available. Fortunately, there was water in a jar under the corridor. Under the moonlight, it looked clear and crystal clear, easy to scoop up. He drank it, finding it as sweet as maltose syrup. After drinking several sips, he went to bed. By morning, worms were excreted filling the mat, and he felt his heart and abdomen instantly relieved, and the chronic illness was cured. The whole family was amazed. Investigating the cause, it turned out that the temple servant had been soaking red vine roots in water daily to weave straw sandals.
