Malaria in children can be treated by moxibustion at Dazhui (GV14) and Baihui (GV20), with the number of moxa cones determined by the child's age. (Baihui is located five cun above the anterior hairline.)
For children suffering from chronic malaria that does not resolve, moxibustion can be applied to the depression between the lateral sides of the first and second toes, one cone on each side; this acupoint is named Neiting (ST44).
(Section 15)
Qian Yi stated: Whenever a child presents with yellowing of the body, skin, and eyes, it is referred to as Huang Bing (Jaundice disease). Symptoms include body pain, stiffness in both arms, difficulty in urination and defecation, generalized jaundice, yellowing of the face, eyes, and fingernails, urine resembling the color of house dust, staining clothes like yellow dye. This condition is known as Huang Dan (Jaundice). These two types of syndromes often occur after severe illnesses. There is another type where infants, within one hundred days or half a year after birth, present with slight yellowing of the body without prior severe illness; this is due to Stomach Heat, which also applies to adults. Another presentation involves a yellow complexion, abdominal distension, pica (eating earth), and thirst, known as Pi Dan (Spleen Jaundice); yet another is congenital jaundice appearing immediately after birth. The Classics state: All forms of jaundice belong to Heat; deep yellow coloration confirms this. If the color is pale yellow mixed with white, it indicates Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency and dysfunction. Zhu Danxi stated: There is no need to distinguish among the five types; they are all caused by Warm-Heat pathogens, similar to the fermentation process of Qu (yeast starter), making this principle clear. *Quan Ying Fang Lun* states: Yellowing arises from Cold-Dampness accumulating in the Spleen and Stomach, steaming and transforming into heat. In Yangming disease, if there is no sweating and urination is difficult, with internal heat congestion in the heart, jaundice will inevitably develop. Chao Yuanfang stated: For infants aged one hundred days to six months, if the body is slightly yellow but not due to Shaoyang jaundice, it is also due to Heat in the Spleen and Stomach. Moxibustion should not be used, as fire therapy will exacerbate the heat. This results from improper nursing care. Clothing should be reduced, and cooling pills or powders should be administered to resolve the condition spontaneously. One must not recklessly administer decoctions or moxibustion, as the harm would be significant.
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: A deep pulse, thirst with desire to drink water, and difficult urination all lead to yellowing. If jaundice is impending, and the Cun Kou pulse is imperceptible with cold breath from the nose, the condition is incurable.
Luo Qianfu stated: A child presented with steaming fever in late summer, chest and diaphragm fullness and irritability, skin yellow like rotting orange peel, and yellow sclera. The tendons and bones were weak, unable to walk or stand. This was caused by the heat of late summer combined with dampness, creating steaming heat that affected the meridians and entered the marrow, disrupting Zang organ harmony. Consequently, Spleen Earth overacted upon Heart Fire, and Damp-Heat combined to form this disease. Heart Fire excess causes steaming fever and chest/diaphragm fullness; Spleen Dampness excess causes skin yellowing like rotting orange peel. Excess pathogenic factors attack what they overcome and insult what cannot overcome them, leading to Kidney and Liver invasion, resulting in tendon-bone weakness and inability to move. The *Nei Jing* states: Spleen Heat manifests as yellow complexion and muscle twitching. It also states that Damp-Heat leads to Wei syndrome (flaccidity syndrome).
