(Chapter 35)
The four conditions of carbuncle (Yong), toxicity (Du), swelling (Zhong), and furuncle (Jie) in children are all caused by the stagnation of Qi and blood, compounded by the invasion of pathogenic heat-toxin. Consequently, these factors aggregate to form carbuncles, furuncles, swellings, and toxic lesions. In the initial stage, when a slight redness and elevation appear at the head of the lesion accompanied by pain, one should immediately apply saliva from a person who is not speaking (Wuyu Tuo). Frequent application around midnight will cause it to subside. If the condition does not recede, apply Wanbing Jiedu Wan (Ten Thousand Disease Detoxifying Pill) topically after grinding it, and administer it orally for immediate effect. If suppuration has already occurred, Tianwu San (Heavenly Aconite Powder) should be applied as a plaster. For various carbuncles and toxic sores in children, Loulu Tang (Radix Euphorbiae Humifusae Decoction) can be administered orally. In cases of severe heat, formulas such as Jiedu Wan (Detoxifying Pill), Sishun Qingliang Yin (Four-Obedience Cooling Drink) added with Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), and Xuanshen (Scrophularia Root), or Wufu Huadu Dan (Five Blessings Detoxifying Pill) and Lianqiao Tang (Forsythia Decoction) may be used.
Tianwu San is used for topical application to treat all types of swellings and toxic lesions.
Ingredients: Tian Nan Xing (Rhizoma Arisaematis), Cao Wu (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii Preparata), Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) in equal proportions.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with fresh ginger juice to form a paste for topical application on the affected area; mixing with rice vinegar is also effective.
Jiedu Wan treats all types of carbuncles, swellings, toxic furuncles, erysipelas (Dan Du), and migratory red swelling (Chi You Zhong) in children.
Ingredients: Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix) [each 3 qian]; Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Spica), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [each 1 qian].
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like a chicken head seed. Coat the pills with Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis). Administer orally with a decoction of Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medullae) and Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
Wufu Huadu Dan treats accumulated heat-toxin in children, causing mouth and tongue ulcers, and widespread scabies/sores on the body.
Ingredients: Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) [each half liang]; Fu Ling (Poria) [2 liang]; Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Ya Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis) [each half liang]; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [7 qian]; She Xiang (Moschus) [1 zi]; Jin Yin Bo (Gold Leaf), Yin Bo (Silver Leaf) [10 pieces each].
Grind the above ingredients into a powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like an Euryale Seed (Qian Shi). For a one-year-old infant, administer one pill divided into four doses, dissolved and taken with Mint Decoction. It also treats post-variolous toxin attacking upward after smallpox/rubella, causing bleeding from gums/mouth and foul odor; in such cases, use a chicken feather to sweep the medicine into the mouth.
Xuan Shen Ji resolves various heat pathogens and eliminates carbuncle toxins.
Ingredients: Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) [each 1 liang]; Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [half liang, roasted].
Grind into a powder. Form pills using refined honey. Administer with a decoction of Deng Xin Cao (Junci Medullae) and Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba). Alternatively, add a little rock sugar. One may also add Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus).
Loulu Tang treats pediatric carbuncles and sores, as well as erysipelas and furuncles.
Ingredients: Lou Lu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Radix), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, nodes removed), Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas) [each 2 qian]; Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [1 liang]; Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix) [7 qian].
Cut the herbs into small pieces. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct in plain water, and adjust the dosage according to the child's age and size.
Qingjie Wan treats accumulated heat in the five zang organs in children, with toxic vapors attacking upward, causing chest swelling and sore throat, fever of the head and face, dry lips and mouth, sores on both cheeks, convulsions with tidal fever, and phlegm obstruction.
Ingredients: Han Shui Shi (Halloysitum Rubrum), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) [each 4 liang]; Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis) [1 liang].
Grind into a powder. Form pills using steamed wheat cake dough, sized like an Euryale Seed (Qian Shi). Administer one pill per dose, ground and taken with freshly drawn cool water.
Another prescription: For soft furuncles that do not heal for a long time, grind newly kiln-fired bricks into a powder, mix with vinegar, and apply topically.
Another prescription: Take one large Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), remove the pulp, and grind it on open ground until the center becomes flat. Use a paste made of flour and water to build a rim around the edges, adhering it to the skin surrounding the furuncle. This allows the pus to drain completely upon rupture, leaving no scar.
