Meishi Formula: For treating bamboo or wood splinters embedded in the flesh that cannot be removed, crush the stems of Achyranthes bidentata (Tu Niuxi) and apply the paste to the affected area.
Another formula: Grind black sheep manure until fine, mix with water to form a paste, and apply. Alternatively, scrape elephant skin debris and mix with saliva for application; this will cause the splinter head to emerge, after which it can be picked out with fingernails.
Another formula: Chew white plum flesh and apply as a poultice.
Another formula: Calcinate deer horn into powder, mix with saliva for application; the splinter will discharge spontaneously.
Guila Wan (Cinnamon Wax Pill): Treats malignant splinters embedded in the flesh. Grind cinnamon bark into powder, melt yellow beeswax, and mix with the cinnamon powder to form pills the size of beans. When a splinter is present, place one pill on the site, secure with five layers of wet paper, and warm over charcoal fire until the wax melts and penetrates the tissue around the splinter, causing it to expel itself. If no splinter is present, healing is accelerated; this is miraculous.
Another formula: For stubborn splinters, crush castor seeds (Ricinus communis), line the wound with silk gauze, and apply medication over it. Monitor frequently; if the splinter begins to emerge, extract it immediately to avoid forcing healthy tissue out due to excessive pressure from the medication.
Another formula: Chew fermented soybeans (Douchi) until soft and apply; effective.
Another formula: Crush apricot kernels (Xingren), mix with axle grease (Che Zhi), and apply; the splinter will expel.
Another formula: For various bamboo, wood, or needle splinters embedded in flesh, use equal parts fresh ginger (Shengjiang), dried tangerine peel (Chenpi), and salt. Grind into a paste and apply; the splinter will expel spontaneously.
Songzhi Fang (Pine Resin Formula): Treats pain and distension caused by embedded splinters when other treatments fail. Apply pine resin (Songzhi) to the wound and bind with cloth for three to five days. The root of the splinter should emerge, painless and itch-free, falling off naturally.
Ruxiang Gao (Frankincense Ointment): Treats contusions from beating and metal wounds; effective for all types of open injuries.
Ingredients: Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Pyritum (Ziran Tong) (7 qian each); Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Notopterygium incisum (Qianghuo), Angelica pubescens (Duhuo), Cyathula officinalis (Chuan Niuxi), Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao), Patrinia villosa (Liu Jinu), Pholiota nameko (Hei Qianniu), Phellodendron amurense (Huangbai), Cistanche deserticola (Pogu Zhi), Liquidambar orientalis (Baijiaoxiang), Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Dihuang), Prepared Rehmannia (Shu Dihuang), Paeonia lactiflora (Chishao), White Peony Root (Baishao), Cortex Acanthopanacis Senticosi (Zijinpi), Lithargyrus (Huandan), Angelica dahurica (Baizhi) (0.5 liang each); Beeswax (Baila) (1 liang); Sesame Oil (Mayou) (4 liang).
Preparation: Except for gum resins, frankincense/myrrh, lithargyrus, and wax, grind the remaining herbs into powder. Fry in oil while stirring constantly with a willow branch. When the ointment nears completion, add the excluded ingredients, test consistency again, filter through raw cloth, and cool in water stored in a porcelain vessel. Apply using soft oil-paper dressing; for deep wounds, fill the cavity with the ointment.
Xuexie Gao (Dragon's Blood Ointment): Treats contusions from beating.
Ingredients: Dragon's Blood (Xuexie), Calomelas (Qingfen), Dried Rose (Gan Yanzhi), Lithargyrus (Miduoseng), Frankincense (Ruxiang), Myrrh (Moyao) (equal parts).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder. Clean the wound with cold water and dry. Melt lard (Zhuzhi), mix with the powder, spread onto red paper, and apply as a patch.
Longnao San (Borneol Powder): Treats heat-toxin pain from contusions.
Ingredients: Borneol (Longnao) (1 zi), Calomelas (Qingfen) (1.5 qian), Lithargyrus (Miduoseng) (2 qian), Musk (Shexiang) (a little), Lithargyrus (Huandan) (1 liang).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder. Sprinkle dry powder directly onto the wound, cover with blue cloth, leaving one aperture to vent toxic vapors.
Lingyi Gao (Miraculous Ointment): Treats contusions, metal wounds, falls, burns, and scalds that fail to heal and become malignant ulcers.
Ingredients: Curcuma aromatica (Chuan Yujin) (3 liang), Fresh Rehmannia Root (Sheng Dihuang) (2 liang), Licorice Root (Fencao) (1 liang), Lard from winter pig (La Zhubanyou) (1 jin).
Preparation: Cut herbs and fry in lard until charred. Filter dregs, add 4 liang of beeswax, melt and stir uniformly. Store in a clean container, submerged in cool water for one day and night. To use, wash the wound with warm water, dry, apply ointment, and cover with white paper. It stops bleeding, relieves pain, prevents scarring, and is particularly effective for frostbite.
Sanwei Wei Yao (Swelling-Resolving Encircling Medicine): Treats contusions without skin breakage, presenting only as cyanosis and swelling, to reduce swelling and relieve pain.
Ingredients: Rhubarb (Dahuang), Hematite (Wumingyi, stir-fried), Wood Ear Mushroom (Mu'er, stir-fried) (equal parts).
Preparation: Grind into extremely fine powder. Mix with honey-water to form a paste, applying it circumferentially around the swollen area.
