For traumatic wind (Po Shang Feng), add Qianghuo (Radix Notopterygii) and Quanxie (Scorpio) each 5 fen. For pain in the waist and hypochondrium, double the dosage of Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) and Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) to 1 qian each.
Qufeng Zhibao Gao (Wind-Dispersing Precious Ointment/Pill) is used to treat various wind-heat syndromes.
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) 2 liang 5 qian, Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) 1 liang 5 qian, Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) 2 liang 5 qian, Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) 5 qian, Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 liang, Huashi (Talcum) 3 liang, Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) 2 liang 5 qian, Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae) 1 liang, Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 2 liang, Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) 5 qian, Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae) 5 qian, Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong) 2 liang 5 qian, Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) 5 qian (without removing joints), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae) 1 liang, Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae) 5 qian, Shanzhizi (Fructus Gardeniae) 5 qian, Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata) 1 liang, Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri) 5 qian, Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) 1 liang, Bohe (Herba Menthae) 5 qian, Qianghuo (Radix Notopterygii) 1 liang, Renshen (Radix Ginseng) 1 liang, Quanxie (Scorpio) 5 qian, Xixin (Herba Asari) 5 qian, Huanglian (Rhizoma Coptidis) 5 qian, Duohuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis) 1 liang.
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of a bullet. Take one pill per dose, chew thoroughly, and swallow with tea or wine as preferred, preferably before bedtime.
Gua Di San (Melon Peduncle Powder)
Ingredient: Gua Di (Fructus Cucumeris) 1 liang.
Crush to the size of hemp seeds, stir-fry until yellow, and grind into a fine powder. The dosage depends on the patient's deficiency/excess and the chronicity of the disease: 1 qian, 2 qian, or 3 qian. Add half a portion of tea powder, and administer mixed with one cup of sour pickle juice. For wind-phlegm epilepsy syndromes, this emetic is suitable for expelling phlegm. If vomiting persists, administer a small amount of real Moschus (Shexiang) to stop it. Another formula named Dusheng San is used to treat various wind-phlegm obstruction, dysphagia, abdominal distension in various epilepsies, and other fullness-related miscellaneous diseases. If inducing vomiting, choose a clear and sunny day; unless the condition is urgent, it must be done before Chen (07:00-09:00), Si (09:00-11:00), and Wu (11:00-13:00) hours. The *Neijing* states: "From dawn to noon is the Yang of heaven." Discussing the Qi of the four seasons, the general principle favors emesis. This is because Heaven's Qi is above, and Human Qi is also above. The same applies to the Qi of a single day; the patient should fast overnight. If the medicine does not induce vomiting after administration, give hot pickle soup again. If vomiting has occurred, add Quanxie (Scorpio) powder 0.5 qian (lightly stir-fried) for wind-epilepsy. If parasites are present, add Xionghuang (Realgar) powder 1 qian; for severe cases, add Yuanhua (Flos Genkwa) powder 0.5 qian to immediately expel worms. For dampness-induced edema and fullness, add Xiaochidou (Semini Phaseoli Angularis) powder 1 qian. This method should not be used lightly. For deficient patients, use Zhizi Dou Chi Tang (Gardenia and Fermented Soybean Decoction); for fullness, add Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis). Treatment cannot be applied uniformly. After vomiting, agents that descend fire, promote Qi flow, and clarify the spirit should be used. Details on emetic therapy can be found in the Rheum-Fluids section.
Xi Yan San (Thin Saliva Powder) is used to treat wind-phlegm retention, sounds in the throat resembling sawing, or dampness-induced edema and fullness.
Ingredients: Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) (large ones, 14 pieces), Zhuya Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) (one piece, roasted).
Chop the ingredients, prepare as one dose, add two cups of water and a little fresh ginger juice, and take orally. If unable to swallow, drip slowly into the mouth.
Jiuji Xi Yan San (Emergency Thin Saliva Powder) is used to treat stroke with surging phlegm-rheum, chest diaphragm blockage, and closed Qi obstruction.
Ingredients: Mingfan (Alumen), Zhuya Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) (plump and uninfested, roasted, skin and strings removed. Each 1 liang).
Grind into powder. Take 1-2 qian per dose at any time, mixed with warm water, which will induce vomiting.
Zaojiao San (Gleditsia Powder)
Ingredients: Luobozhi (Semini Brassicae Radish), Zhuya Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) (equal parts).
Grind into a fine powder. Take 2-3 qian per dose, decoct in water, drink hot, and vomiting will occur after half a cup.
Xia Zhi Tang (Shrimp Juice Decoction)
Take half a jin of shrimp, add medicinal green onion, ginger, and other seasonings, boil in water. Eat the shrimp first, then drink the broth. Subsequently, use an goose gizzard probe to induce vomiting of phlegm. Shrimp is used to guide the expulsion of wind.
Chu Bi Tongtian San (Nasal Insufflation Sky-Penetrating Powder) is used for sudden fainting due to stroke, rigid jaw, and unconsciousness.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Xixin (Herba Asari), Lilu (Rhizoma Veratri), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Bohe (Herba Menthae) (each 1 qian), Zhuya Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) (skin and strings scraped off, 3 pieces).
Grind into a fine powder. Use a reed tube to load the medicine, take a small amount, and insufflate into the nose.
(Nasal Insufflation Method from *Shenghui Fang*) is used for sudden stroke, coma, rigid jaw, and inability to swallow medicine.
Ingredients: Xixin (Herba Asari) (cleaned of soil), Zhuya Zaojiao (Fructus Gleditsiae Sinensis) (equal parts).
Grind into a fine powder. Dip a paper twist in the medicine and insert into the nose, or gently blow into the nose using a bamboo tube. Once sneezing occurs, proceed with oral medication. Alternatively, rub Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) to open the jaw, then continuously administer fresh ginger juice to restore patency.
Treatment for Stroke
Ingredients: Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis) (round and white, roasted wrapped in wet paper), Nanmuxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum), Cangzhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Lanceae), Xixin (Herba Asari), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (raw), Shichangpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii) (finely cut. Each 1 qian), Baiyangyan (Goat Eye Bulb - likely a specific local herb name, possibly referring to a bulbous root), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) (soaked briefly in boiling water. Each 1 qian).
Chop the above ingredients into a coarse powder, divide into two doses. Add one and a half cups of water and seven thick slices of fresh ginger, decoct until half remains. While hot, mix with half a pill of Suhexiang Wan (Styrax Pill) and administer. For excessive phlegm, add two roasted Quanxie (Scorpio).
For all types of sudden stroke, regardless of wind-stroke, cold-stroke, summerheat-stroke, dampness-stroke, Qi-stagnation stroke, or phlegm/dampness syncope, this method can be used initially. First, remove the skin and strings from Zaojiao (Gleditsia), and mix with Xixin (Herba Asari), raw Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis), and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) into a powder. Insufflate into the nose using a tube. Wait for sneezing, then administer the aforementioned medicine. For rigid jaw, use the middle finger to rub a mixture of Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Xixin (Herba Asari) powders and Wumei (Fructus Mume) flesh frequently until the jaw opens.
"Qi Si Ge" (Song of Reviving the Dead) is used to treat all wind-stroke, Qi-stagnation, and phlegm conditions leading to sudden death.
"Sudden death: Tiannanxing, Banxia, Shichangpu,
Muxiang, Cangzhu, Xixin, Gancao.
Decoct in ginger, mix with Suhexiang,
Add Quanxie to disperse phlegm.
First, use half-part Tiannanxing, Xixin, and Zaojiao powder,
Insufflate into nose until sneezing returns.
Then frequently administer the previous medicine,
For rigid jaw, Wumei flesh is best.
Grind them together with Xixin and Tiannanxing powder,
Rub teeth with middle finger, mouth opens naturally.
Remember this song to save the world,
Why fear death if Yang can be restored?"
