In the first hundred days after birth, if an infant exhibits a cold mouth and abdomen, shivering with cold chills, frequent tremors, flexed legs and clenched fists, incessant crying day and night, or locked jaw unable to open, this is termed "Fetal Cold" (Tai Han). This condition originates in utero when the mother experiences abdominal pain leading to cold invasion. The classics state: "Fetal cold often involves abdominal pain." It may also result from the mother consuming raw and cold foods, or contracting external Wind-Cold-Damp-Heat pathogens before pregnancy, followed by treatment with cooling medicines that injure the fetal Qi internally. Consequently, after birth, the infant sleeps excessively and intermittently passes white loose stools after breastfeeding. If not treated early, it often progresses to Slow Convulsion (Man Jing).
Treatment for Fetal Cold must be symptomatic. For abdominal pain, cold body, and restless crying, use Danggui San (Angelica Decoction) to alleviate pain. For irregular breathing, use Yunqi San (Uniform Qi Powder) to regulate Qi. For refusal to nurse, use Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) to nourish Stomach Qi, and Baishao Tang (White Peony Decoction) to dispel Cold-Dampness; the nursing mother should also observe dietary restrictions.
Danggui San (Angelica Decoction): Treats infants suffering from Fetal Cold, presenting with blue-white complexion, abdominal pain, and restless crying.
Ingredients: Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Guan Gui (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Chuan Xiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Pao Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum), Xiang Fu Zi (Rhizoma Cyperi), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) in equal parts.
Preparation and Administration: Grind into powder. Take one "yi zi" (a traditional small measure) per dose, mixed with breast milk. Administer twice daily, adjusting dosage according to the infant's age and size.
Yunqi San (Uniform Qi Powder): Treats infantile Fetal Cold with cough, wheezing, and abdominal distension.
Ingredients: Jie Geng (Radix Platycodonis), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, 1 qian), Sha Ren (Fructus Amomi), Hui Xiang (Fructus Foeniculi, each 0.5 qian), Pao Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Preparatum, 0.25 qian), Fen Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 0.4 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Grind into fine powder. Take one "yi zi" per dose, mixed with boiling water on an empty stomach.
Shen Ling Bai Zhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder): Treats infantile diarrhea due to Spleen-Stomach Deficiency-Cold and loss of appetite. (See section on Diarrhea.)
Baishao Yao Tang (White Peony Decoction): Treats Fetal Abdominal Pain; the nursing mother should take it concurrently.
Ingredients: Chao Bai Shao Yao (Stir-fried Radix Paeoniae Alba, 1 qian), Ze Xie (Rhizoma Alismatis, 1 qian), Zhi Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, 0.2 fen), Bo He (Herba Menthae, 0.2 fen).
Preparation and Administration: Decoct in water, adding three slices of fresh ginger and 1 qian of Gou Teng (Ramulus Uncariae cum Uncis). If taken by the nursing mother, a larger dose is appropriate.
Infants born with thick muscles and a reddish complexion resembling blood color. After one month, they gradually become emaciated, with red floral patterns appearing in the whites of the eyes. Symptoms include heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), difficulty in defecation, and frequent spitting of saliva. This is termed "Fetal Fat" (Tai Fei). The primary treatment should be the Body Bath Method (Yu Ti Fa).
Body Bath Method (Yu Ti Fa):
Ingredients: Tian Ma Mo (Powder of Rhizoma Gastrodiae, 2 qian), Quan Xie (Scorpio, 0.5 qian), Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, 0.5 qian), Wu She Rou (Meat of Tropidonotus siniticus, wine-soaked, 3 qian), Bai Fan (Alumen, 3 qian), Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis, 2 qian), She Xiang (Moschus, one "yi zi").
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients uniformly. Use three bowls of water, add three qian of the powder, a handful of peach branches, and five to seven additional peach twigs. Decoct until boiling ten times. Use the warm liquid for bathing the infant, avoiding the back.
