The newborn infant has a facial complexion lacking luster and vitality, thin muscles, watery white stools, a body devoid of rosy color, frequent choking gasps and hiccups, eyes lacking brilliance. One should bathe the infant's body as described in the preceding method.
Chao Yuanfang stated: While in the womb, if the mother experiences fright or palpitations due to sudden shocks, the Qi of fright enters the fetus. The fetus inherits the mother's Qi constitution. After birth, the child exhibits poor spirit and a pale, deficient complexion. Initially, there is a lingering low-grade fever, followed by red cheeks and susceptibility to fright. The child fears moving objects and startles at sounds. The area between the eyebrows (Yintang) appears cyanotic; during high fever while nursing, the child is easily startled during sleep, with slight twitching of the hands and feet. If prolonged, this may develop into epilepsy (Xian syndrome). For mild cases of fright, Qinglong Tang (Blue Dragon Decoction), Quanxie Bing (Whole Scorpion Cake), or Zhisheng Baoming Dan (Supreme Holy Life-Preserving Pill) are used. For severe cases, Duoming Dan (Life-Seizing Pill) is employed. Qian Yi stated: When an infant presents with high fever, vomiting milk, restless mind, convulsions of the limbs, rigidity of the body, and upward deviation of the eyes, this constitutes the syndrome of Congenital Fright Wind (Tai Jing Feng).
For infants suffering from congenital fright, observe the Qi color on the glabella. If the color is bright red and vividly greenish-blue, it is treatable; if it is dark cyan-black, it is untreatable. If the fingerprint on the tiger's mouth (web between thumb and index finger) curves inward, it is treatable; if it extends outward beyond the joint, it is untreatable.
Initially, one should release the exterior and dispel wind pathogens, clear phlegm and settle fright, regulate Qi, and apply external patches to the fontanelle. In severe cases, use Zhu Yin Wan (Cinnabar-Silver Pill) to promote purgation. Since newborns find it difficult to take oral medications, upon encountering this condition, immediately take pig milk, finely grind Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and Shexiang (Musk), mix a small amount of each, and apply the powder to the infant's mouth, which will result in recovery.
Qinglong Wan (Blue Dragon Pill): Treats congenital heat in infants, resolves phlegm, and settles fright.
