The pulse at the Cun Kou (radial artery) is floating and soft, indicating Qi deficiency, manifesting as numbness in the upper body. The pulse at the Chi position is floating and soft, indicating numbness in the lower body.
A pulse that is floating and slow indicates dampness causing paralysis/numbness. A pulse that is floating and tight indicates cold causing painful Bi syndrome (painful obstruction).
A pulse that is choppy and hollow indicates stagnant blood (blood stasis), manifesting as numbness with loss of pain and itch sensation.
Prolonged sitting, lying down, or leaning against supports can cause stagnation of Qi and blood in the meridians, resulting in numbness and insensibility, which demonstrates Qi stagnation. Numbness occurring mostly in the four limbs and fingers/toes is due to insufficient Qi and blood nourishment reaching the extremities. Zhu Danxi stated: In such cases, Fuzi (Prepared Aconite Root) should be used to unblock the meridians; this is the meaning behind it. For those with numbness in all ten fingers, there is often damp-phlegm and stagnant blood in the Stomach; Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), and Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) is appropriate.
