The umbilicus is the root and foundation of the infant; when the fetal qi (vital energy) is secure, the physical form is robust, and a deep umbilicus indicates a long-lasting life root. If the reception of qi is discordant, it leads to physical atrophy and protrusion of the umbilicus. In the practice of cutting the umbilical cord for infants, the benefit lies in gradual growth and deepening; harmonious breastfeeding results in a more solid constitution. This represents the mutual compliance of blood vessels, thereby facilitating the mutual nourishment of the physical form. For newborns, if qi accumulates in the stomach and chest, they frequently stretch and pull, making hiccuping sounds, straining to expand their qi, which forces it downward into the root. Consequently, the umbilicus protrudes, swells, and turns red, appearing vacuously large and alarming. Ignorant people may attribute this to improper umbilical cord cutting, which is incorrect. If the umbilical cord is not cut deeply enough, within a month it will naturally wither along with its root. In excess conditions, the depth should be increased; in deficiency conditions, it should be shallower. The principle of depth or shallowness depends on innate endowment. This often arises because the mother experienced fright and heat during pregnancy. It is appropriate to administer heat-dispersing medicines so that the umbilicus returns to its normal state; one need not apply toxic drugs externally, as such toxins might harm the body.
Shanzhi Wuling San (Gardenia Five-Ingredient Powder): Treats infant umbilical protrusion.
Zhi Zi Ren (Stir-fried Gardenia Seed), Bai Zhu (Stir-fried Atractylodes Rhizome), Bai Fu Ling (Poria), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) (each 1 qian), Guan Gui (Cinnamon Twig) (0.5 qian).
Grind all ingredients into an extremely fine powder. Take 1 qian or 0.5 qian per dose, mixed with honey water or Deng Xin Cao (Juncus Decoction).
Erdou Tang (Two-Bean Decoction): Treats the aforementioned condition.
Chi Xiao Dou (Adzuki Bean), Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean), Tian Nan Xing (Processed Arisaema Rhizome), Bai Lian (Belamcanda Rhizome) (each 1 qian).
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Apply half a qian per use, mixed with fresh juice from Banana Stem (Ba Jiao), around the four sides of the umbilicus. Apply once daily, twice over two days. Recovery occurs when white discharge is passed through the lower orifices (urine/stool).
When a newborn’s eyes remain closed and do not open, it is caused by the mother consuming foods with heat-toxins during pregnancy. The treatment method involves using a small amount of Xiong Dan (Bear Bile), steaming it with water, and washing the eyes with this solution seven to eight times a day. If the eyes do not open after three days, administer Sheng Di Huang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) orally, while also cleaning the nipples. Shan Yin Chen Tang (Mountain Artemisia Decoction) must be used to promote lactation and facilitate eye opening.
Sheng Di Huang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction): Treats newborns whose eyes do not open at birth.
Gan Sheng Di Huang (Dried Rehmannia Root), Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 1 qian).
Grind a small amount of these ingredients into powder. Apply to the infant's mouth. Mix with Deng Xin Cao (Juncus) decoction and apply to the mouth. Continuous administration yields effective results.
Shan Yin Chen Tang (Mountain Artemisia Decoction): Used for promoting lactation.
Shan Yin Chen (Artemisia Capillaris), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) (each 3 qian), Gua Lou Gen (Trichosanthes Root), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Licorice Root), Sheng Di Huang (Fresh Rehmannia Root) (each 1.5 qian).
Chop the ingredients and decoct in water. Take after meals. For the first two doses, express and discard old milk; after the third dose, allow the infant to breastfeed. If the mother breastfeeds directly, she may also take this decoction.
