Prolonged walking injures the sinews, causing labor to the Liver; prolonged standing injures the bones, damaging the Kidneys.
Regimens of health state: Do not walk with rapid steps, do not sit until fatigued, and do not stand with your back to the sun.
Running and horseback riding disturb the Qi, causing it to rebel in the diaphragm. If one drinks water before the Qi has dispersed, the water clashes with the Qi, resulting in Shàngqì (rebellious Qi / asthma). After walking and sweating, do not hang your feet over the edge of the bed; doing so for a long time leads to Xuèbì (blood bi / numbness due to blood stasis), foot pain, and lower back pain.
The True Man says: When walking at night, frequently clench your teeth to kill ghostly evils.
Shen Kuo in *Bitan* records: There is a yellow-flowered spider in the grass called Tiānshé (Heaven Snake). If bitten by it and then exposed to dew, one will suffer from a disease resembling leprosy, with the whole body ulcerating. Those who travel through dew or marshes should be cautious.
Books state: It is inadvisable to travel far in heavy fog; when traveling, drink a small amount of wine to ward off the miasma of fog. In the past, three people traveled early in the morning: one ate porridge and became ill, one traveled on an empty stomach and died, and one drank wine and remained healthy. Wine can strengthen Qi and repel fog miasma.
Books state: Prolonged sitting injures the flesh; prolonged lying down injures Qi. Do not sit with your back to the sun, and do not lie facing the wind. Sitting beside tombs causes the spirit and vitality to scatter.
If one lies down after coming out and is blown by the wind, blood coagulates in the skin forming Bi syndrome, coagulates in the interstices causing bloody sweat or diarrhea, and coagulates in the feet causing Jue (cold extremities).
Sleeping with a candle lit unsettles the Hun and Shen (spirit). Sleeping on the side with knees flexed does not damage Heart Qi. Upon waking, extending the feet prevents the scattering of spirit and vitality. Lying flat invites evil spirits. One should not speak while sleeping. The five Zang organs are like suspended chimes; if not suspended, they cannot produce sound (implying that during sleep, organ functions are internalized and speaking dissipates essence).
Do not rest your feet on high places while sleeping; doing so for a long time damages Kidney Water, leading to cold knees and feet.
One must not play or draw on the face with ink and brush while sleeping, as this prevents the soul from returning. Sleep paralysis without speech indicates the Hun and Shen have wandered outside and are held by evil; one should call out quietly. Avoid using fire/light, as light prevents the return of the spirit and may even cause death. For those afflicted by sleep paralysis near a lamp, since the cause is brightness, light is not taboo, but one should not approach or call urgently, lest the spirit be lost.
Do not place a charcoal stove near the head while sleeping; over time, the heat causes heaviness in the head, red eyes, dry nose, and brain abscesses, sores, and boils.
Habitually closing the mouth while sleeping preserves Qi and excludes evil. Long-term mouth breathing or changing complexion due to thirst is detrimental. Also, do not cover your head while sleeping at night to achieve longevity. Washing feet before sleeping prevents cold diseases in the four limbs.
Furthermore, sleeping in the cold while facing the wind causes aphonia. Sleeping drunk among millet husks causes sores and Great Wind disease (leprosy) with loss of eyebrows. Additionally, lying supine under stars and moon during thunderstorms, sleeping drunk facing the wind, or fanning oneself, all invite wind diseases.
The Hermit says: One must guard against drafts in sleeping quarters; frequently used baked clothes and quilts harm the body. Sleeping immediately after a full meal eventually forms Qi disorders, lower back pain, blockage of the hundred vessels, and accumulations.
After sweating, one must not sleep outdoors or bathe, as this causes shivering, fever, and rashes.
Drafts in sitting or sleeping areas must be avoided promptly, especially for those with weak constitutions or the elderly. A family lived for only three generations with short lifespans and asked Peng Zu. Peng Zu observed their sleeping quarters and found a hole directly behind the Naohu (GV17) acupoint. He instructed them to seal it, and they subsequently enjoyed longevity. This is because draft enters the ear and blows into the brain, dispersing Yang Qi. The head is where all Yang meridians converge and governs life.
