If the Jiazi year belongs to Fire, it is governed by Heat transformation as the Si Tian (Heavenly Qi). Jia belongs to Earth, governed by Rain transformation as the Si Yun (Central Qi). Mao belongs to Metal, governed by Clearness transformation as the Si Di (Earthly Qi). Heat transformation, Rain transformation, and Clearness transformation are all the original Qi of Si Tian, Si Yun, and Si Di; therefore, they are called "Zheng Hua Du" (Standard Transformation Degree). (Note: Refers to Heavenly numbers.) Furthermore, Jia is a Yang stem, representing Excess (Tai Guo). In cases of Excess, there is no Overcoming Qi (Sheng) nor Repaying Qi (Fu); thus, there is no "Xie Hua Du" (Abnormal Transformation Degree). In all Yang years, which represent Excess, the Five Elements are mostly expressed using Cheng Numbers (completed numbers); hence, it is said that Heat transformation is seven, Rain transformation is five, and Clearness transformation is nine.
Similarly, in the Xinmao year, it belongs to Metal, governed by Clearness transformation as Si Tian. Xin represents Water Yun (Central Qi), governed by Cold transformation as Si Yun. Zi represents Fire, governed by Heat transformation as Si Di. Clearness, Cold, and Heat transformations are all the original Qi of Si Tian, Si Yun, and Si Di; therefore, they are also called "Zheng Hua Du." However, Xin Water belongs to a Yin stem, representing Deficiency (Bu Ji). In cases of Deficiency, the Rain transformation of Earth will inevitably come to overcome it. Since Water is weak and cannot resist, the offspring of Water, which is Wood's Wind transformation, will inevitably come to avenge its mother and overcome Earth. However, the targets overcome by Rain transformation (Earth) and Wind transformation (Wood) are not the original Qi of Si Tian, Si Yun, or Si Di; therefore, this is called "Xie Hua Du." Although Rain and Wind transformations do not conform to the natural state, one overcoming and one being overcome is an inevitable logical outcome. Thus, in all Yin years representing Deficiency, the Five Elements are mostly expressed using Sheng Numbers (generating numbers); hence, it is said that Clearness transformation is four, Cold transformation is one, and Heat transformation is two.
Suppose the Jia year belongs to Yang Earth, termed Tai Gong (Great Palace), then Tai Gong Earth serves as the main carrier. Therefore, what Tai Gong Earth generates, and what generates Tai Gong Earth, both follow "Shao" (Lesser) rather than "Tai" (Greater). Thus, what Tai Gong Earth generates is Shao Shang Metal; what Shao Shang Metal generates is Tai Yu Water, ending at Yu. Also, what generates Tai Gong Earth is Shao Zheng Fire; what Shao Zheng Fire generates is Tai Jiao Wood, stopping at Jiao. In all Yang years, the mutual generation between upper and lower follows "Shao"; therefore, it is called "Shao Tai Shang Xia Xiang Sheng" (Mutual Generation of Upper and Lower following Lesser and Greater).
Similarly, the Ji year belongs to Yin Earth, termed Shao Gong (Lesser Palace), then Shao Gong Earth serves as the main carrier. Therefore, what Shao Gong Earth generates, and what generates Shao Gong Earth, both follow "Tai" (Greater) rather than "Shao" (Lesser). Thus, what Shao Gong Earth generates is Tai Shang Metal; what Tai Shang Metal generates is Shao Yu Water, ending at Yu. Also, what generates Shao Gong Earth is Tai Zheng Fire; what Tai Zheng Fire generates is Shao Jiao Wood, stopping at Jiao. In all Yin years, the mutual generation between upper and lower follows "Tai"; therefore, it is called "Tai Shao Shang Xia Xiang Sheng" (Mutual Generation of Upper and Lower following Greater and Lesser).
Regardless of whether it is a Yang or Yin year, the character "Chu" (Initial) is noted under "Jiao," and the character "Zhong" (Final) is noted under "Yu," because every year begins with Jiao Wood as the Chu Yun (Initial Movement) and ends with Yu Water as the Zhong Yun (Final Movement). This remains unchanged year after year, hence it is called Zhu Yun (Principal Movement). Just like Zhu Qi (Principal Qi), every year begins with Wood as the Chu Qi (Initial Phase) and ends with Water as the Zhong Qi (Final Phase). This remains unchanged year after year, hence it is called Zhu Qi.
