(Shengji Zonglu [Complete Records of the Holy Relief] contains diagrams and explanations for sixty years of Yungui (Luck and Qi), but here only four theories are selected as examples. Students can infer the rest by analogy.)
When Shaoyin Junhuo (Ministerial Fire) governs Sitian (Heavenly Qi), Yangming Zaojin (Dry Metal) governs Zaiquan (Earthly Qi), and the central Yun (Movement) is Taigong Tuyun (Great Palace Earth Movement). When Earth Yun is excessive, the Qi transformation operates ahead of time. Regarding the Qi of Heaven and Earth: above corresponds to the South, facing south, with Taiyin (Great Yin) as the left interstitial Qi and Jueyin (Terminal Yin) as the right interstitial Qi. Thus, the Qi disseminated by Heavenly Governance is bright. Below corresponds to the North, facing north, with Taiyang (Great Yang) as the left interstitial Qi and Shaoyang (Minor Yang) as the right interstitial Qi. Thus, Earthly Qi is austere and its decree is urgent. At the transition, Cold Qi and Heat Qi intersect. (This refers to the fact that the final Qi of the previous year was Shaoyang Xianghuo (Ministerial Fire), while the initial Qi of the current year is Taiyang Hanwater (Great Yang Cold Water); the Taiyang Cold intersects with the previous year's Shaoyang Heat.) Heat combines with Dryness (Shaoyin Junhuo is above, Yangming Zaojin is below). Clouds race, the Rain Mansion becomes moist, Humidity transformation proceeds, seasonal rains descend. Metal and Fire combine their virtues, corresponding in heaven to Huoxing (Yinghuo/Mars) and Baiding (Taibai/Venus, appearing bright and large). The corresponding grains are red and white. Water, Fire, Cold, and Heat maintain balance at the Qi intersection, initiating disease. Heat diseases arise in the upper part, Cold/Clear diseases arise in the lower part, and Cold and Heat contend in the middle. The people suffer from cough and asthma, hematemesis and hematochezia, nasal congestion and sneezing, red eyes, skin sores and ulcers, Cold Jue invading the stomach, heart pain, waist pain, abdominal distension, dry and swollen throat. (From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun [Treatise on the Six Primal Ordinances].) This is the normal state of Qi transformation. One must wait for the arrival or non-arrival of its Qi before naming the disease. In this year, Fire is Heavenly Qi, Metal is Earthly Qi. Fire overcomes Metal; Heavenly Qi is full, Earthly Qi is deficient, and the central Yun is Earth. Heavenly Qi generates Yun, and Yun generates Earthly Qi. Even if there is deficiency and evil victory, it will be slight. Since Heavenly Qi is full, the source of transformation is solid. One should first regulate the source of transformation at the beginning of Da Han (Major Cold) before the new year. (The source of transformation for Shaoyin is in the third month. The mention of "Da Han before the new year" may be an error.) To take the source of transformation is to calm the Fire Qi. It is suitable to eat red and white grains to preserve true Qi, and to eat interstitial Qi grains to avoid empty evil. (Sui Gu [Year Grains] refer to grains transformed by Zaiquan and its left/right interstitial Qi; Jian Gu [Interstitial Grains] refer to grains transformed by Sitian and Yun interstitial Qi; Xu Xie [Empty Evil] refers to wind coming from the opposite direction.) Use Salty flavor to soften and regulate the upper part; if severe, use Bitter flavor to disperse. Use Sour flavor to astringe and stabilize the lower part; if severe, use Bitter flavor to drain. Since Yun is identical to Earthly Qi, treat with Warmth and Heat. (For Taigong, Taishang, and Taiyu years, which share Cold-Dampness, treat with Dryness and Heat; for years differing in Wind-Heat, use more Cooling transformation; for Taijiao and Taizheng years, differing from Cold-Dampness, treat with Dryness-Dampness; for years sharing Wind-Heat, use more Cold transformation; for years sharing Heavenly Qi, treat with Cold-Clear methods. From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.)
Before the midpoint of the year, Heavenly Qi is governed by Shaoyin. The transformation of Shaoyin has Heat as its root and Yin as its mark. At this time, the transformations of root and mark should be half cold and half heat, without excess, which is the peace of Heavenly Governance. If Heat evil prevails, stifling heat arrives, and Fire exercises its governance. The people suffer from vexation and heat in the chest, dry throat, fullness on the right side, skin pain, aversion to cold, fever, cough, and asthma. Heavy rain is about to arrive, with bloody saliva, bloody diarrhea, nasal discharge, sneezing, vomiting, and change in urine color. In severe cases, sores and swelling occur, pain in shoulders, back, arms, and clavicular fossa, heart pain, lung distension, abdominal fullness and bloating with cough and asthma. The disease originates in the Lung; if the pulse at Chize is absent, death occurs and it is incurable. (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun [Supreme Essentials Reliably Great Treatise].) The method is to level with Salty-Cold, assist with Bitter-Sweet, and astringe with Sour.
After the midpoint of the year, Earthly Qi is governed by Yangming. Its transformation does not follow root and mark but follows the middle Qi of Taiyin. At this time, Dryness and Dampness proceed together without excess, which is the transformation of Yangming. If Dryness evil prevails, there will be mist, clear air, and dim vision. The people suffer from frequent vomiting, bitter vomit, frequent sighing, heart and hypochondriac pain, inability to turn sideways. In severe cases, dry throat, dusty face, lack of luster in the body, and reversed heat on the outer foot. The treatment uses Bitter-Warm, assisted by Sour-Acrid, and drains with Bitter. (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun.)
When Earth Yun is excessive, it is called Dunfu Zhi Ji (Era of Piling High). Rain and Dampness circulate, and Kidney Water suffers evil. The people suffer from abdominal pain, cold extremities, unhappiness, heavy body, and vexation. In severe cases, muscle flaccidity, foot weakness and inability to hold, difficulty walking, pain under the feet, fluid retention causing abdominal fullness, reduced appetite, inability to move limbs, changes occurring in the季的 months (last month of each season). Zang Qi (Water Qi) lies hidden, while Hua Qi (Earth Qi) rules alone. Springs surge, rivers overflow, dried marshes produce fish. Great wind and rain occur, soil collapses, scales appear on land. Diseases include abdominal fullness, loose stools, borborygmus, and downward purging; if Taixi pulse is absent, death occurs and it is incurable. Treatment is suitable with Bitter-Hot medicines, which is the principle of medicines and foods appropriate for the year's Qi. (From Qi Jiao Bian Lun [Treatise on Changes in Qi Intersection].)
The First Qi begins at the start of Yin hour on the day of Da Han (Major Cold) in the twelfth lunar month of the Guihai year, and ends at the start of Zi hour on the day of Chunfen (Spring Equinox) in the second month of the same year, totaling more than sixty days (87.5 ke). The Main Position is Taijiao Wood, the Guest Qi is Taiyang Water, unified by the central Taigong Earth Yun. Wind, Cold, and Dampness three Qi obey the governance of Shaoyin and execute Spring commands. Earthly Qi shifts, Dryness departs, Cold begins, hibernating animals hide again, water freezes, frost descends again, wind arrives, and Yang Qi is depressed. The people feel overly enclosed, joints become stiff, and waist pain occurs. As hot summer approaches, sores and ulcers arise inside and outside. (From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.) It is suitable to treat the Guest of Taiyang: tonify with Bitter, drain with Salty, firm with Bitter, and moisten with Acrid, opening the cou li (pores), promoting fluid distribution and Qi circulation. (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun.) Eat Dan grains (Fire grains) to preserve true Qi, and eat Ji grains (Earth grains) to ward off empty evil. Even great Cold evil cannot cause harm. (Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.)
The Second Qi starts from Zi hour positive on Chunfen day to Xu hour positive on Xiaoman (Grain Full) day, more than sixty days. The Main Position is Shaozheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Jueyin Wood. Fire and Wood share virtue, with central Earth Yun assisting Shaoyin, executing spreading and flourishing transformation. At this season, Yang Qi spreads, wind flows, Spring Qi is correct, and all things flourish. Cold Qi occasionally arrives, and the people harmonize. Diseases include strangury, dim vision, red eyes, Qi stagnation in the upper part causing heat. (From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.) It is suitable to treat the Guest of Jueyin: tonify with Acrid, drain with Sour, and relax with Sweet. (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun.) Eat Dan grains to preserve true Qi, and eat Dao grains (Metal grains) to ward off empty evil. Although Wind evil exists, it cannot cause harm. (From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.)
The Third Qi starts from Hai hour initial on Xiaoman day to You hour initial on Dashu (Great Heat) day, more than sixty days. The Main Position is Shaozheng Fire, the Guest Qi is Shaoyin Fire, with central Earth Yun, disseminated by Heavenly Governance. At this season, Great Fire moves, myriad species flourish, and Cold Qi arrives. The people suffer from Qi Jue and heart pain, alternating cold and heat, cough, asthma, and red eyes. (From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.) It is suitable to treat the Guest of Shaoyin: tonify with Salty, drain with Sweet, and astringe with Sour. (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun.) Eat Dan grains to preserve true Qi, and eat Dou grains (Water grains) to ward off empty evil. Although Heat evil exists, it cannot cause harm. (From Liu Yuan Zheng Ji Lun.)
The Fourth Qi starts from You hour positive on Dashu day to Wei hour positive on Qiufen (Autumn Equinox) day, more than sixty days. The Main Position is Taigong Earth, the Guest Qi is Taiyin Earth. Yun and Qi are the same, called Siqi (Governing Qi). Moist heat arrives, heavy rain frequently occurs, cold and heat interact. The people suffer from cold and heat, dry throat, jaundice, nasal discharge, sneezing, and fluid retention. It is suitable to treat the Guest of Taiyin: tonify with Sweet, drain with Bitter, and relax with Sweet. Eat Bai grains (White grains) to preserve true Qi, and eat Ma/Nu grains to ward off empty evil. Although Dampness evil exists, it cannot cause harm.
The Fifth Qi starts from Shen hour initial on Qiufen day to Wu hour initial on Xiaoxue (Lesser Snow) day, more than sixty days. The Main Position is Shaoshang Metal, the Guest Qi is Shaoyang Fire, with central Earth Yun. Guest Fire takes effect, Wei Huo (Fearful Fire) descends, heat returns, Yang transforms, things grow and flourish, and the people are healthy. The disease is Wenbing (Warm Disease). It is suitable to treat the Guest of Shaoyang: tonify with Salty, relax with Sweet, and soften with Salty. Eat Bai grains to preserve true Qi, and eat Dou grains (Water grains) to ward off empty evil. Although Fire evil exists, it cannot cause harm.
The Final Qi starts from Wu hour positive on Xiaoxue day to Chen hour positive on Da Han day, more than sixty days. The Main Position is Taiyu Water, the Guest Qi is Yangming Metal, with central Earth Yun. Earth generates Metal, Metal generates Water; the three Qi are compatible and proceed with smooth transformation. Dry command executes, residual fire is internally blocked. The people suffer from swelling in the upper part, cough and asthma, and severe hematemesis. Cold Qi rises frequently, causing frost and fog haze. Diseases arise in the skin and cou li, enter internally to the hypochondrium, connect downwards to the lower abdomen, and cause Cold Zhong (Middle Cold). It is suitable to treat the Guest of Yangming: tonify with Sour, drain with Acrid, and firm with Bitter. Eat Bai grains to preserve true Qi, and eat Shu grains (Fire grains) to ward off empty evil. Although Dryness evil exists, it cannot cause harm.
However, from the First Qi to the Third Qi, Heavenly Qi governs, which is the norm of Sheng (Victory/Excess); from the Fourth Qi to the Final Qi, Earthly Qi governs, which is the norm of Fu (Reprisal/Return) (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun). If Shaoyin Qi wins before the midpoint of the year, there must be a reprisal from Taiyang. If Yangming Qi wins in Zaiquan, there must be a reprisal from Shaoyang. These reprisals all occur after the midpoint of the year. Observe the timing of the winning Qi to verify the slowness or speed of the reprisal Qi and treat accordingly. Where there is victory, there is reprisal; where there is no victory, there is none. (From Zhi Yao Yao Da Lun.)
