Steam large hawthorn fruits (Crataegi Fructus), pound them to remove the seeds, add prepared rice flour (Jingmi) and an appropriate amount of rock sugar, mix thoroughly, and form into cakes. They can be eaten as snacks at any time; they are capable of resolving stagnation, aiding digestion, and transforming phlegm-fluids.
Take ripe Trichosanthes fruit (Gualou), separate the pulp and seeds, and place them in a stone mortar. Burn clam and mussel shells into powder, mix this powder into the Trichanthes pulp to facilitate cutting. Pound everything together with the seeds to form cakes, dry them until half-dry, cut into fine shreds, then pound evenly again to reform into cakes. Dry completely for storage, or grind into powders or pills. The effect of stopping cough and clearing phlegm is very rapid.
When preparing eye medicines before the Qingming Festival, all preparations should be timed according to the exact moment of the Qingming transition. Use spring water from wells in the east direction to decoct the herbs and prepare pastes, such as Zijin Ding, Huanglian Gao, and Biyun Gao. With sincere and meticulous preparation, miraculous effects are invariably achieved. If one is too busy during the festival to prepare medicines, one may simply draw well water according to the solar term, store it in clean bottles, seal the mouths tightly, cover the tops with mud, and bury them in clean soil. When time permits, retrieve the Qingming water to prepare the medicines; the effect is the same.
In the twelfth lunar month, collect the gallbladders of green fish. Grind Gallstone (Bile Calx/Danfan) into powder, fill it into the fish gallbladders, and hang them in a ventilated place to dry. Whenever encountering throat obstruction (Houbi), sore throat, or unilateral/bilateral tonsillar swelling (Dan/Shuang Ruie), take the Danfan powder, use a reed tube to insufflate a small amount into the throat, and the condition will heal immediately.
In the fourth lunar month, mulberry fruits turn black and ripe. First, collect Eclipta herb (Hanliancao) in any quantity. Select the larger plants, remove roots, stems, and leaves, wash clean, and dry in the sun. Place in a porcelain jar, sprinkle with a little salt, and marinate for half a day. After drying, steam in a steamer, expose to sun to dry, and grind into powder, yielding approximately three to five sheng. Then, mix with mulberry juice, form into cakes, dry in the sun, and grind into fine powder. Every morning, mix three qian with wine and take on an empty stomach. It greatly consolidates spirit, nourishes yin and tonifies the kidneys, and is particularly effective in darkening hair and beard. If making pills, it can be added arbitrarily.
A physician is like a general defending against enemies, and medicine is like the soldiers repelling them. A physician's use of medicine is analogous to a general's use of troops. Those skilled in victory train their soldiers in peacetime; those skilled in health preservation stockpile medicine before illness occurs. Thus it is said: In times of peace, do not forget war; in safety, do not forget danger. Preparedness ensures no disaster; this is what is meant. Mencius said: For a disease lasting seven years, seek three-year-old mugwort (Ai Ye). If not stored beforehand, it cannot be obtained in a lifetime. Han Yu said: Yuzha, Dansha, Qingzhi, Chijian, Niuxiu, Mabo, and the skin of broken drums—all are collected and stored without omission, ready for use; this is the mark of a good physician. All living beings are subject to internal disturbances by the Seven Emotions and external contact with the Six Evils. Even sages and virtuous men cannot guarantee immunity from disease. Therefore, Shennong tasted various herbs to treat illnesses. Practitioners of medicine must indeed store everything without omission. Gentlemen who aspire to health preservation must understand the nature of medicines, store and preserve them to meet sudden demands; this is also a means of benefiting others. There is nothing in the world that is not medicine, nor any place that is not healing. Thus, "medicine" does not merely refer to medicinal materials, nor is it limited to seeking them in markets. Flowers, vegetables, and fruits planted in one's garden can all serve as medicine. The *Suwen* states: "Stillness preserves the spirit." The *Shiji* states: "If we speak of medicine, even daily activities and speech can serve as medicine." Therefore, I have drawn diagrams of flower-and-medicine gardens and pavilions, and compiled miscellaneous writings on benevolence and the Dao, to supplement the *Yitong*. This may offer some minor assistance, allowing people to see the supportive role of medicine and healthcare, thereby dispelling disease and preserving life. In this way, everywhere there is medicine, and each thing fulfills its function according to its location. For leisure in gardens and pavilions, there are floral medicines; for appropriate hunger and fullness, there are dietary medicines; for moderate desires, there are lifestyle medicines; for suitable warmth and cold, there are clothing medicines; for clear conversation, there are verbal medicines; for social interactions, there are miscellaneous writings acting as medicine. The reason Chunfu collected these ten supplementary chapters is likely to provide some small benefit.
