Zhong's sister-in-law, Lady Jinhua, did not eat for seven days after giving birth in Qin. Initially, she complained of headache and heart pain, followed by eye pain as if being cut. This condition recurred intermittently, with intervals between episodes lasting only moments. Whenever the headache was severe, she desired to place a large stone on her head; when heart pain was intense, she scratched the wall with her ten fingers, suffering to the point of death; when her eyes hurt again, she wanted to gouge out her own eyeballs with her hands. Such suffering lasted for ten days. Three or four imperial physicians and several local experts consulted each other but had no effective plan. Some claimed that certain medicines could cure headaches caused by Chuanxiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong); others said specific drugs could treat heart pain caused by Jianghuang (Curcuma longa). These were all baseless remarks, and ultimately, the root cause of the illness remained unknown. The patient grew increasingly weak, and the doctors exhausted their methods. I assessed that the disease was critical and could only be cured by a miraculous elixir, necessitating the administration of Heilong Dan (Black Dragon Pill). Zhong hesitated, having not eaten for two days, fearing the body could not withstand it. In the evening, I administered half a pill, and the symptoms slightly subsided; at midnight, I gave another dose, and she fell asleep as usual; at dawn, she passed stool about three sheng (approx. 3 liters), discharging substances resembling locust eggs, and the illness reduced by half. At the Si hour (9-11 AM), she passed similar material again, and then she was suddenly cured. I left servants like Jingchai to care for her; she was nearly lifeless, her body only cooled and her breath resumed in the afternoon, after which she faintly asked for water, and from then on, she recovered completely. Generally, postpartum treatment prioritizes the expulsion of lochia (waste blood); if blood stagnation is not resolved, such disasters occur. People of the world do not understand this principle; old women and mediocre physicians fail to recognize the root of diseases, leading inevitably to premature deaths. Without encountering a good physician, one will eventually live with regret. Now, I widely distribute Heilong Dan to benefit people, so that they may appreciate its efficacy and use it, thereby fulfilling their natural lifespan. This is not done to seek reward, but to alleviate suffering and preserve life. Preface by Guo, May 5th, 1st Year of Chongning.
