"Bao You Xu Zhi" (Prerequisites for Preserving and Nurturing Infants) states: Speech is the voice of the Heart. When a fetus is in the womb, if the mother suddenly experiences fright or terror, pathogenic qi enters the Heart. Consequently, the fetus is affected by the maternal qi, causing the Heart Palace to lose its guardianship and the root of the tongue to become obstructed. For children aged four or five who cannot yet speak, Changpu Wan (Acorus Pill) is used.

Children with insufficient congenital endowment lack sufficient Qi and Blood, resulting in thin muscles and exposed joints, resembling the knee of a crane. This is also caused by Kidney deficiency. Kidney deficiency leads to internal depletion of essence and marrow, causing the skin and integument to lose nourishment. They are easily attacked by pathogenic qi, becoming increasingly emaciated and withered; this condition is likely what is referred to as "crane knee" (rickets with joint deformity).
Jiawei Dihuang Wan (Modified Rehmannia Pill) treats pediatric crane knee.
Shudihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata) (boiled until soft and mashed, 4 liang), Shanzhuyu (Fructus Corni Officinalis), Shanyao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae) (each 2 liang), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis), Bai Fuling (Poria) (each 0.5 liang), Lurong (Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum) (roasted with butter), Niuxi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) (each 2 qian).
