To treat dampness overflowing within, where the Spleen and Stomach fail to control it, resulting in retained fluids, chest and diaphragm stuffiness, and abdominal fullness.
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, five jin, soaked in rice water for seven days) Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, white pith removed) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, three jin each, stir-fried with ginger juice) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, thirty liang, stir-fried)
Grind the above into powder. Take three qian per dose, washed down with ginger decoction, three times a day. Alternatively, decoct with water, taking seven qian per dose.
Ke Yunbo said: The *Neijing* states that when Earth transport is excessive, it is called "Dunfu" (Piled High), and its disease is abdominal fullness; when Earth transport is deficient, it is called "Beijian" (Low Monitor), and its disease is fluid retention, stuffiness, and blockage. Zhang Zhongjing formulated this prescription to embody the meaning of cutting down excess and leveling out deficiency. Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) is soft and slow, while Cangzhu is fierce and harsh. Here, we take advantage of its ability to induce sweating and rapidly remove dampness, thus using Cangzhu as the Sovereign herb. One cannot assume that because Baizhu tonifies Qi and promotes movement, recovery will occur; therefore, Chenpi is added as an Assistant. Sweet flavor enters the Spleen first; when the Spleen is tonified, it functions vigorously, so roasted Gancao is used as an Envoy. Named "Pingwei San" (Stomach-Pacifying Powder), it actually regulates the Spleen and Stomach. Although doubling the amount of Baizhu, the draining and reducing power exceeds that of this formula. Ignorant people consider Baizhu a tonic and believe it should be taken for a long time, failing to realize that Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange) is potent and unsuitable for large doses; this is a lack of deep thought.
When pathogenic factors knot in the chest, causing chest stuffiness and hardness, a slightly floating pulse at the Cun position, and Qi rushing upward to the throat preventing normal breathing; or subcostal fullness with irritability, hunger but inability to eat, and cold extremities.
Gua Di (Melon Seed) Chi Xia Dou (Adzuki Bean, fried until yellow, one he each) Xiang Chi (Prepared Soybean, one he)
Grind the above two ingredients separately into powder. Take one qian, use one he of Xiang Chi, add seven he of hot water, boil into a thin porridge, strain, take the liquid, mix with the powder, and take warm.
Ke Yunbo said: The chest is the residence of clear emptiness. Cold pathogenic factors condense, internal heat fails to reach the exterior, leading to stuffiness and hardness. Qi rushes upward, causing subcostal irritability and difficulty breathing through the throat. Descending allows Stomach Yang to penetrate; ascending allows Lung Qi to generate and rise. Like the Heart located in the chest, these three methods...
(Also known as Yiyuan San, also known as Liuyi San)
To treat summerheat stroke during summer, where heat damages Yuan Qi, causing heat inside and outside, lack of energy to move, irritability, thirst wanting to drink, and dryness/depletion of the intestines and stomach. It can also induce labor and promote lactation.
Guifu Huashi (Kaolin, six liang, processed by water flotation) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, one liang) Chensha (Cinnabar, three qian)
Grind the above into fine powder. Mix with one bowl of newly drawn cold water, take three qian.
Ke Yunbo said: If Yuan Qi is too weak to support the body, death ensues; if pathogenic factors are too strong without restraint, death also ensues. Now, heat damages Yuan Qi, causing lack of energy to move. At this time, if one uses Renshen (Ginseng)... for deficiency... inheriting the autumn gathering qi, clearing the upper burner, stopping thirst, calming the mind, and promoting circulation. Inducing labor and lactation, accumulation, water retention, and other syndromes follow the same principle, hence treated concurrently. This formula tonifies Qi without aiding pathogenic factors, does not damage Qi, living up to the name "Yiyuan" (Benefiting Yuan). It should stand alongside Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) and Shengmai San (Generate Pulse Powder) as a tripod.
