Upon the birth of a newborn, the meridians and collaterals have not yet fully circulated. The infant relies on breast milk for nourishment. At this stage, the skin and flesh are not yet robust, and the essence and marrow are not yet full. Consequently, the infant is prone to external pathogenic invasions (Ke Wu, sudden fright or invasion by evil qi). Investigating the root cause, it often stems from improper care during birth.

1. For a newborn, first decoct Huanglian Gancao Tang (Coptis and Licorice Decoction) strongly. Wrap a finger with soft silk or cotton, dip it into the medicine, and use it to clear the anal opening of foul blood and turbid qi. If this is not done in time, the consequences may be severe.

2. If an infant does not cry after birth, immediately check the mouth for blisters. Puncture them promptly with a silver hairpin, wipe away the blood with cotton, and ensure no blood enters the throat; this can save the infant's life.

3. One method advises against cutting the umbilical cord too early. Wrap the infant in cotton clothing, burn the base of the umbilical cord with a lit paper twist, and only cut the cord once the infant's breathing has stabilized.

4. Before the infant begins breastfeeding, administer a strong decoction of Dan Dou Chi (Prepared Soybean). This effectively expels fetal toxins and is highly effective. It can also be given after breastfeeding, as it helps nourish Spleen Qi.

5. If a newborn does not urinate, this indicates Fetal Heat. Take four slices of the white part of green onion (Da Cong Bai), simmer them with half a cup of breast milk for a short while, divide into four doses, and administer. This will resolve the issue.

6. If a newborn suffers from constipation and urinary retention, leading to severe abdominal distension and distress, urgently have someone rinse their mouth with boiling water and then perform suction therapy (Za Fa) on the infant's anterior chest, back, and palms/soles.

7. If an infant is born without skin, dust the body generously with dry white rice flour until new skin forms.

8. Infants under one year old are referred to as "sprouts." Frequent bathing must be strictly avoided to prevent the accumulation of damp-heat, which can lead to Chi You Dan Du (Red Wandering Carbuncle/Dermatitis), appearing like applied rouge.

9. When bathing an infant, ensure all surroundings are shielded to carefully avoid wind and cold. The umbilicus must be kept covered and dry; otherwise, wind pathogens may enter through the navel and spread toxicity to the Heart and Spleen.

10. If an infant suddenly experiences convulsions or spasms, lay them flat on a mat. Allow the limbs to move freely; do not hold them tightly. This is because Wind and Phlegm agitate each other and move counter-currently, damaging the sinews and collaterals.

(This formula treats redness and swelling in both feet of infants, with wandering fire-toxin spreading from the feet to the lower abdomen or from the hands to the chest, conditions that are often fatal if not treated urgently. Apply this ointment immediately to save the patient. It is also effective for adults suffering from red, swollen legs with wandering fire, or damp-heat latent in the collaterals where the skin is neither red nor swollen but pain is extreme. Patients report heat in the legs, while palpation reveals coldness; this is known as Fu Qi Bing (Latent Qi Disease). Apply this ointment urgently for immediate relief.)

Ma Lan Tou (Kalimeris Indica / Kalimeris Root): Quantity unspecified. In winter, when leaves are absent, roots may be used.

Wash off the mud with water, pound into a paste, and squeeze out the juice. Dip a chicken feather into the juice and apply it to the affected area. Reapply when dry. If there are ulcers in the crevices of the neck, legs, or ribs, mix this juice with finely sifted flour (Fei Luo Mian) and apply as a poultice.
