To treat Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold, with retained water and stagnant Qi, condensing into white discharge, where the dysentery passed is entirely white mucus, this formula is suitable. It should only be taken when dysentery first occurs, provided there is no high fever or headache.
Bohai Sulphur (Lao Pan Huang) 1 liang, finely ground to dust.
Take 1 fen of white flour, stir-fry in a pan until cooked, let cool, then grind together with Bohai Sulphur powder in a mortar until uniform. Add boiled water as needed, roll into pills the size of Sophora seeds (Wu Tong Zi). Take 50 pills per dose, stop when symptoms cease. Take on an empty stomach with warm rice soup. Do not take this medicine if dysentery has just begun.
To treat Spleen and Stomach Qi cold, where cold affects the Kidney, Earth and Water attack each other, cold-dampness contends, and the dysentery passed is entirely clear saliva-like fluid, resembling egg white, this formula is suitable. It may be taken alternately with the previous "Bohai Pill".
Dendrobii Caulis (Shi Hu), processed by removing roots; Atractylodis Rhizoma (Bai Zhu); Evodiae Fructus (Wu Zhu Yu); Saposhnikoviae Radix (Feng Feng) [Note: Text says 'Feng', likely Saposhnikoviae or similar wind-dispelling herb, context implies Feng Feng]; Chebulae Fructus (He Li Le), each wrapped in flour, fire-roasted until hot, remove kernel, use only skin, weigh half liang; Ostrae Concha (Mu Li) 1 fen, fire-baked until red.
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, mix with refined honey, roll into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 50 pills on an empty stomach in the morning with warm rice soup. Do not take if high fever is present.
To treat San Jiao (Triple Burner) congestion-heat, with blood scattering, invading the Spleen's deficiency, seeping into the Large Intestine, resulting in red dysentery without white mixture, no high fever, and no heart/abdominal pain. Pulse diagnosis shows upper pulse surging and large, Spleen pulse external bulging and deep-sunken. This formula is suitable. Wait until Upper Jiao Qi clears, red dysentery subsides, suddenly turning white, or after red dysentery reduces and lower abdomen feels distended, then prepare and take the following formula for safety.
Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang), processed by removing roots; Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng); Ophiopogonis Tuber (Mai Men Dong), processed by removing heart; Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Du Huo); Schizonepetae Spica (Jie Sui) [Note: Text says 'Jie Sui', likely Schizonepetae]; Poria Cocos (Pu Huang - Note: Pu Huang is typically Lygodii Spora, text might imply Lygodium or typo, but standard is Lygodii Spora for hemostasis, here listed with Ma Huang/Fang Feng, likely Lygodii Spora for blood stasis); Lygodii Spora (Pu Huang) 4 zhu.
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose after meals, mixed with boiled water, strain and drink. When red dysentery slightly reduces and turns white, or lower abdomen feels distended, prepare and take the following formula. After taking the previous formula for red dysentery, if it turns white or lower abdomen distends, take this formula.
Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fang Feng); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), roasted, each 1 fen; Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong) half liang; Costi Rhizoma (Mu Xiang) 3 zhu; Chebulae Fructus (He Li Le), wrapped in flour, fire-roasted, remove kernel, use only skin, half liang.
Grind into fine powder. Take 1.5 qian per dose, with one cup of water, decoct to 0.9 cup, take on an empty stomach with dregs.
To treat food-stagnation dysentery, where no red color is passed, only yellow mucus, occasionally white foam, decreased appetite, sallow emaciation, this formula is suitable.
Chebulae Fructus (He Zi), wrapped in flour, fire-roasted, remove kernel, use only skin, 1 liang; Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Huang Ju Pi); Atractylodis Rhizoma (Bai Zhu); Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuan Xiong), each half liang; Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) 4 qian; Myristicae Semen (Rou Dou Kou) one fruit; Bohai Sulphur (Lao Pan Huang) 1 liang, finely ground.
Grind into fine powder, mix evenly with Bohai Sulphur. Use Coicis Semen (Yi Yi Ren) powder to make porridge, roll into pills the size of Sophora seeds. Dry quickly over fire. Take 50 pills on an empty stomach with warm rice soup. Must be dried thoroughly to preserve medicinal properties.
To treat red dysentery, where passed stool is pure fresh blood, suddenly appearing dark. Observation suggests this is often due to anger damaging Liver and Heart Zheng Qi, or physical conflict damaging meridians.
Taxilli (Sang Ji Sheng) 1 liang; Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Du Hu); Costi Rhizoma (Mu Xiang); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), roasted.
Grind into fine powder. With one cup of water, decoct to 0.8 cup. Take at any time, 2 qian per dose.
Discussion on Epidemic Toxic Dysentery (Dysentery medicines must be used carefully according to syndrome differentiation to achieve miraculous effects. Generally, these formulas are exquisite, but the key is matching disease and medicine.)
Epidemic toxic dysentery spreads household to household within a region. It is not a single type; syndromes are diverse and origins strange. Even Shennong and Qibo considered it a rare disease. Later physicians fail to grasp its basics, claiming white dysentery is cold, red is heat, and mixed is cold-heat disharmony, without identifying meridian syndromes. Prescribing warming drugs for white dysentery works by chance; prescribing cooling drugs for red dysentery fails because the source organ is unknown. Fools claim heat comes from Liver/Heart, yet no verified cooling formula exists. They claim cold-heat disharmony causes mixed dysentery, yet no harmonizing formula exists. Physicians do not know the disease originates in Zang-Fu organs, merely copying formulas. If lucky, it works; if mistaken, the drug fights the disease invisibly, harming the patient. Alas, since Shennong, physicians have failed to understand Heaven-Earth climate changes and Zang-Fu adaptability, thus cannot comprehend common disease sources, let alone rare diseases. I have explored Wu Yun (Five Movements) and Liu Qi (Six Qi), verifying Heaven and Man. Rarely do I understand dysentery fully, but its changes can be spiritually perceived. Now I state the basics for future physicians. The Classic states: Spring injury to Yang leads to summer diarrhea/dysentery. Regardless of Tai Sui, if Spring is hot, Summer brings dysentery. Promote Liver Qi to cure. If 2-3 doses fail, stop. If effective, continue. Do not overdose. Physicians often misdiagnose and harm lives. If 2-3 doses fail, stop. Below are formulas for various changes.
Zi-Wu years: Jun Fire governs Heaven. Earth generates Metal, Fire controls Metal. Earth-Fire interaction creates dampness. Dampness moistens Earth, Heat humidifies Fire. Fire Qi stagnates, Heart Qi is injured internally, causing red-white dysentery. Yin-Shen years: Xiang Fire governs Heaven. Earth-Fire transform together, Qi interacts similarly. Chou-Wei years: Tai Yin governs Heaven. Earth transformation flows, Earth-Fire interact, damp-heat arrives. Mother-Child transformation differs in nature. Warm-Damp attacks Heart, Spleen stagnates, Heart Qi changes internally, Blood stasis occurs, causing red-white dysentery. Although Tai Sui differs, the Qi transformation causing dysentery is the same: Summer-Autumn transition, Fire-Metal succession, Earth Qi mediates. Earth moistens, Heat humidifies, then Metal generates. Fire-Earth Qi interacts. Thus, although governing years differ, stagnation causing dysentery is identical. See formulas below. Mao-You years: Yang Ming governs Heaven. Metal rules, Qi is crisp/cold. Few Spleen diseases. June-July: Water-Fire clash. August-September: Metal-Wood attack. Water-Wood transformation excess causes red-white downward flow. That year, Jun Fire governs Earth, Shao Yin in泉 (Spring). Fire controls Metal. If Fire dominates mid-year, flames bright, Cold transformation saves, causing red-white dysentery. Ji-Hai year: Shao Yang in泉, Xiang Fire governs Earth. Similar transformation. Jun Fire transformation is gentle (slow harm), Xiang Fire is fierce (fast harm). Treatment same. See formulas below.
Chen-Xu years: Tai Yang governs Heaven. Water transformation flows, Cold Evil attacks Heart, Blood-Qi changes internally, damages middle, causing red-white dysentery. Rare and acute. Fever like fire, painful, stool like purple grass water, glue-saliva, tea dregs. Urgent treatment required or death follows quickly. See formulas below.
Ji-Hai year: Jue Yin governs Heaven. Wood transformation flows, Earth-Wood interact, Wind-Damp contends, Spleen Earth receives Evil. Liver Hot Blood invades Spleen weakness, seeps into Large Intestine, causing red-white dysentery. See formula below.
Above Heaven-Earth climates are not detailed enough. I request to deduce using Wu Yun politics.
Jia-Zi, Jia-Wu: Damp transformation excess. Bing-Zi, Bing-Wu: Cold transport excessive. Geng-Zi, Geng-Wu: Receives Heavenly Punishment, requires Water rescue. Previous year's Earthly Branches, Heaven-Earth cross, Gang-Rou begin to interact. Monthly Qi is Water clashing with Heaven, Water-Fire holding, starting annual illness. Meet Cold-Damp transport assisting Water. Suddenly punished transport rescued by Water. First half of year has clear/chilly transformation. Summer climate reverses, Cold-Heat contend, causing red-white dysentery. Cold-Damp offending Fire Virtue differs from normal. Formula below. Zi year severe, Wu year less. If Cold transformation dominates, Yang transformation weak, Cold Malaria/Cold Damage/Smallpox occur, Dysentery adds.
Wu-Zi year: Upper Tian Fu (Heavenly符). Wu-Wu year: Tian Fu Sui Hui. Qi details, People calm. Suddenly Cold-Damp Qi slightly offends Heart, sudden red-white downflow. Many die suddenly. Treatment same as Bing-Shen year. Critics ask: Wu-Zi/Wu-Wu are Fire years, why Cold-Damp offending Heart? Answer: Above Ji-Wu, Wu-Ji Earth exists. Should have Cold-Damp transformation holding Fire, allowing Metal to generate. Wu-Chen/Wu-Wu also suspect Cold-Damp offending Heart. Classic: Middle Law Enforcer, disease fast/critical; Middle Order Executor, disease slow/enduring; Middle Noble Person, disease sudden/death. This explains it.
Ren-Zi, Ren-Wu: Wood transport assists, Wind-Heat vigorous. Wood controls Earth, Spleen receives Evil. If Great Wind/Heat wins mid-year, people get diarrhea/dysentery. Its "Ghost" is in Liver. Formula below. Zi-Wu Earth initial year, Cold Evil contends with Heaven. Bing-Ding position cohabits with Wu-Ji. If Cold-Damp excess mid-year, dysentery treatment same as Jia-Zi, Bing-Wu, Jia-Yin, Jia-Shen, Bing-Yin, Bing-Shen, Wu-Shen, Geng-Yin, Geng-Shen, Ren-Yin, Ren-Shen. Climate similar to Zi-Wu, dysentery same. Formulas below.
Yi-Chou, Yi-Wei, Ding-Chou, Ding-Wei, Ji-Chou, Ji-Wei, Xin-Chou, Xin-Wei, Gui-Chou, Gui-Wei: Each year's transport manages three Qi transformations. Yi-Chou/Yi-Wei: Metal transport originally cool, due to insufficiency, transforms with Shao Zheng (Fire). Fire-Earth mix, Tai Yin resides, Heat transformation runs parallel. Damp-Heat holds, Heart Qi stagnates internally, Blood damaged, red-white downflow. Suddenly Fire does not maintain virtue, invades insufficient Metal, Water must rescue. Cold Evil attacks Heart, causing dysentery. Yi-Chou/Yi-Wei dysentery arises from Earth-Stagnant Fire or Water-offending Heart. Affected Zang-Fu differ, but Earth-Water share womb, Cold-Damp same transformation, so treatment largely same, slightly different. Formulas below. Classic: Transport Cool-Heat-Cold, explains this. Deduce downwards similarly.
Ding-Chou, Ding-Wei: Wood transport correct, Wind contends with Heaven-Earth. Due to insufficiency, transforms with Shao Shang (Metal). If Metal does not maintain virtue, many Clear/Chilly transformations, Fire must rescue. Heat approaches, holds with Earth, Damp-Heat intersects, Blood-Qi damaged internally, red-white downflow. Chou-Wei years, Heaven controls Color, Earth offends Water. Wood insufficient but rage timeless. If Wind transformation arrives, Earth-Wood battle, Liver attacks Spleen. Ding-Chou/Ding-Wei dysentery arises from Liver or Spleen. Formula below. Classic: Ding-Chou/Wei transport Wind-Cool-Heat, explains this.
Ji-Chou, Ji-Wei years: Tian Fu Sui Hui. Qi details, Objects calm, People safe. Tai Yin taste, bitter first, sweet later. Qi transformation intersects. Earth generates Metal, Fire controls Metal. Suddenly Fire-Earth attack mid-year, Heart Blood changes internally, dysentery generated, many die suddenly. Evil cannot invade Nobles. Formula below. In these years, regularly take Spleen-harmonizing medicine to calm the Noble, proper diet.
Xin-Chou, Xin-Wei: Water transport insufficient. Though receives Heavenly Punishment, lower adds Tai Yang, returns to Qi. Year: Heaven-Earth-Water, Cold-Damp excess, Fire Qi stagnates. If dysentery arises, origin Heart, Ghost in Spleen-Kidney. Formulas below.
Gui-Chou, Gui-Wei: Fire governs transport, Qi insufficient, transforms with Shao Yu (Water). Year: Tai Yang in泉, Cold Qi不减, Cold-Damp acts, Fire Qi injured. Dysentery origin Heart, Ghost in Spleen-Kidney-Stomach. Formulas below.
Yin-Shen years: Similar to Zi-Wu, but Xiang Fire politics violent. If unique dominance, harm immediate. If clashes with Water-Earth, syndromes diverse. Formulas below.
Yi-Mao, Yi-You years: Metal transport insufficient, originally Shao Zheng. Yi on Mao is Tian Fu, returns to Ping Qi. Yi on You is San He, named Noble Person, Evil cannot invade. But Metal position upper, Fire position lower, named Reverse Transformation. Metal-Dryness intersects, avoid Fire dominance. If Fire wins, Water rescues. Dysentery arises: Hot weather, disease starts Heart; Cold weather, disease starts Kidney. Formulas below. Ding-Mao year: Wood transport insufficient, lower adds Mao. Though receives Heavenly Punishment, politics not reduced. Mid-year sudden Wind-Heat win, dysentery arises, Ghost in Liver. Yi-You year: Wood receives Heavenly Punishment, but Fire governs Earth, compatible with Wood. Mid-year sudden Wind-Heat acts. Formula below.
Ji-Mao, Ji-You years: Earth transport insufficient. Wood receives Heavenly Punishment, hard to clash. Mid-year Wind-Damp contend, dysentery arises, Ghost in Spleen. Mao year should have this syndrome, You year less. If disease, treatment same. Xin-Mao, Xin-You years: Water transport insufficient, transforms with Earth. Year Water insufficient, Fire transformation wild, holds with Earth. Excess Heat lodges in Stomach, mostly red dysentery, sudden bloody stool. Earth dominance humidifies Fire, red-white downflow. If dysentery arises, origin Heart or Spleen. Formulas below.
Jia-Chen, Jia-Xu, Bing-Chen, Bing-Xu years: Cold-Damp excess, Fire Qi humid. Geng transport year, Clear transformation severe. Year's Luck matches Heaven-Water generation, Earth-Earth compatibility. Above years, dysentery major harm, do not rashly use cooling drugs. Wu-Chen, Wu-Xu years: Water-Fire battle. Ren-Chen, Ren-Xu years: Earth-Wood attack. Dysentery syndromes differ. Formulas below.
Yi-Si, Yi-Hai years: Metal transport insufficient, cannot clash with Heaven, transforms with Shao Zheng. Ding-Si, Ding-Hai years: Upper Tian Fu, Wood transformation severe.
Ji-Si, Ji-Hai years: Wood controls Earth, Spleen receives Evil. Xin-Si, Xin-Hai years: Water transport insufficient, transforms with Earth, Earth-Wood attack, Spleen Qi weak. Gui-Si, Gui-Hai: Insufficient Fire, matches Heaven, conforms to Earth, Fire politics not reduced. Dysentery origin Liver-Heart. Formulas below. By transport, still insufficient. I request Six Qi deduction.
Zi-Wu, Chou-Wei, Yin-Shen years: April-May, Fire-Earth intersect. Chen-Xu years: April-May, Water-Fire clash. Ji-Hai year: April-May, Wood-Earth attack. Mao-You years: April-May, Metal-Fire hold. If Water rescues, Evil offends Heart. Zi-Wu years: June-July, Earth-Fire stagnate. Mao-You years: June-July, Water-Fire clash. Chen-Xu years: June-July, Earth-Wood attack. Ji-Hai year: June-July, Fire-Earth hold. Above months, sudden dysentery follows monthly Qi contention. Good physicians treat the "Ghost" first, disease self-heals. Critics ask: Six Qi move through 12 months, why only mention April-July? Answer: Summer-Autumn transition, Fire-Metal succession, Earth-Water two transformations roam long. Earth resides in Si, generates Metal. Fire located in Shen, controls Metal. Earth born in Shen, transmits Metal. Water born in Shen, saves Metal. Then Summer-Autumn succession logic, Five Elements/Six Qi mysteries manifest. Human dysentery born from these mysteries. Hence Sages name it "Great Strange Disease". I state April-July climates yearly. Other Qi generating dysentery deduce similarly. Six Qi politics not detailed, I request Pulse Diagnosis clarification.
If modern dysentery patients, taking cooling/warming drugs fail. Pulse: Spleen finger external bulging and deep-sunken. Named Chang Pi (Intestinal Dysentery). Syndrome not curable by drug power, will self-resolve eventually. But some patients, chronic, recover by eating random things. This is true Chang Pi syndrome.
Now, dysentery patient, Pulse: Liver finger small and slow. Disease light, cure upon treatment.
