Phlegm-fluid, vomiting, and nausea are all present, completing the presentation of various fluid-retention syndromes. Since it is a fluid-retention syndrome, why does the patient crave water? This is because fluid retention in the epigastrium (heart below) obstructs Heart Fire, preventing it from descending to communicate with the Kidney; instead, the fire flares upward to scorch the Lungs (Huagai, referring to the lungs). Simultaneously, the fluid obstruction prevents the True Yin Water of the Kidneys from ascending to moisten the throat. Consequently, the throat becomes dry, and the patient craves water to relieve this condition. This phenomenon is termed "reverse dryness" (Fan Zao). For such "reverse dryness," the therapeutic method of "pungent substances can moisten" (Xin Neng Run) should be employed.
