Constipation with fecal impaction indicates pathogenic heat entering the interior, resulting in dry stool in the Stomach. Heat-dampness or summerheat affecting the Triple Burner (San Jiao) leads to dryness of body fluids and heat clamping the Large Intestine. Retention of undigested food causes abdominal distension, chest fullness and pain, and a desire to vomit. Blazing heat due to internal wind-heat invasion causing fluid depletion and obstruction is treated with Jiaomi Tang (Gelatin and Honey Decoction).
Jiaomi Tang (Gelatin and Honey Decoction)
Scallion White (Cong Bai, three stalks), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Raw Honey. Boil, remove scallions, and take before meals. (Bingzhang notes: The combination of scallion and honey is toxic and can be fatal.)
For infants with fever and diarrhea, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix); or add 3 fen of fried pine pollen and seven grains of Wuweizi (Schisandrae Fructus). For food retention, roast Caoguo (Tsaoko Fructus) until cooked, remove shells, grind into powder, and take half a spoonful slowly with warm water.
In Shanghan (Cold Damage) or epidemic febrile diseases, extreme heat leading to jaundice, confusion, inability to speak, and loss of consciousness is treated with Zijin Dingzi (Purple Gold Pellet).
Zijin Dingzi Formula
Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), Xionghuang (Realgar), Shancigu (Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus, cleaned flesh, each 2 liang), Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix) (1 liang). Grind into powder, mix with rice paste, and pound for a thousand times in a stone mortar. Take 1 qian per dose, washed down with Bohe Tang (Mint Decoction).
For vomiting milk, use Zisu (Perilla Leaf), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Huashi (Talcum) in equal parts, decocted in water.
For summer diarrhea, use Gancao (Licorice Root), Huashi (Talcum), and Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), decocted in water, with one spoonful of brown sugar added.
For vomiting and diarrhea due to Spleen Earth deficiency, use Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder). Add Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus) if there is accumulation; add Muxiang (Vladimiriae Root) if abdominal discomfort exists. Administer with guiding herbs according to the exterior-interior condition.
Prolonged diarrhea in children inevitably leads to Jingfeng (Infantile Convulsion). This is because prolonged diarrhea weakens Spleen Earth, failing to generate Lung Metal; when Lung Metal is deficient, Liver Wood becomes hyperactive, causing Liver Qi to rebel upward instead of descending, thus triggering convulsions.
To treat prolonged diarrhea, use one Cardamom Doukou (Amomi Fructus Rotundus), cut open, insert 5 li of Moschus (She Xiang), seal it, wrap in dough, and bake until cooked. Grind into powder and administer. Another formula: Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) roasted and powdered, formed into pills with honey, inserted into the umbilicus, covered with oiled paper, and warmed with a hot shoe sole to stop immediately. Another method: eat ripe persimmons to stop immediately. Another method: Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) powdered, mixed with vinegar, applied to the umbilicus. Another method: 4 liang Ginger (Sheng Jiang), 4 liang Sesame Oil, 2 liang Danlin (likely a specific mineral or processed substance), boiled into a plaster and applied to the umbilicus. All are effective.
For children who overeat fruits and wheat products, presenting with abdominal distension, emaciation, good appetite but generalized edema, and dysentery with pus and blood, use 2 fen of Guojiao (Charred Rice Crust) and 1 fen of Madou (Vigna Angularis Seed), ground into powder. Long-term administration leads to recovery.
If pediatric diarrhea is treated with excessive purgatives, causing severe whole-body heat and a preference for lying on cold surfaces, it is due to kidney damage from purging leading to rising Liver Fire and dryness in the Stomach. Use 1 qian of blackened Pine Pollen Songhua to calm the Kidney; sufficient Kidney Water prevents fire from rising. Use 1 qian of red yeast Hongqu (Monascus Fermented Rice) to calm the Stomach and digest food, thereby strengthening the generating qi and curing the disease.
For pediatric malaria lasting more than half a month, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) and Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride).
For chronic malaria and dysentery causing Spleen deficiency and failure to consolidate, use Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) wine-boiled, dried, and powdered. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds using Shenqu (Medicated Leaven), coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar), and swallow with rice drink.
For no sweat, rub crushed Chugen Cao (Radix Isatidis or similar root, literally "stinky root") externally to induce slight sweating for cure. If unhealed after one month, it is Blood Heat; use 5 qian Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) and 2 qian Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride).
For chronic dysentery not stopping, decoct Paojiang (Prepared Ginger) and Hongqu (Red Yeast Rice) to stop it. Hongqu lightly stir-fried warms the middle; Paojiang stir-fried to black cools the Kidney.
