Lin syndrome (dysuria) and Gong bi (urinary retention), if due to deficiency, should be treated by tonifying the mother organ; clear Lung Qi to drain fire. If accompanied by thirst, constipation, and dark urine, the heat is in the Qi level of the Upper Jiao; it is appropriate to promote diuresis via the Bladder, using Qingxin Lianzi Yin (Clear Heart Lotus Seed Decoction). If there is no thirst but urinary retention exists, the heat is in the Blood level of the Lower Jiao; it is appropriate to nourish Yin, using Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) with added Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma). Without Yang, Yin cannot be generated; without Yin, Yang cannot be transformed. If blood deficiency leads to Qi stagnation with heat in the Lower Jiao, take Zishen Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Pill) on an empty stomach, one hundred pills; the discharge of foreign matter from the anterior orifice serves as a sign of efficacy. For cases caused by sexual exhaustion where the lower back and kidneys feel cold as if sitting in water, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) with added Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). For chronic illness that does not resolve, use Yizhi (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus), Xiaohui (Foeniculi Fructus), and Shishi (Talcum) decocted and taken orally.
For Lin pain caused by summerheat-dampness, use Cheqian (Plantaginis Semen), Shishi (Talcum), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), and Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) each 2 qian, Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex) 3 fen, and Dengxincao (Junci Medulla) decocted and taken orally.
Lin syndrome caused by excessive sexual activity should be treated by warming the Kidneys, using Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) with added Fushen (Poria cum Radix), Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), and Gouqi (Lycii Fructus) each 1 qian. If the scrotum feels cold, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang with added Fuzi. Prolonged Lin syndrome leads to sinking of Qi; cold scrotum indicates deficiency-cold in the Lower Jiao; therefore, warming and ascending methods are used.
Shalin (Sand Lin), where urine cannot exit, take one pig bladder, insert a small bamboo tube into the oral opening, blow air inside to inflate it tightly, tie the opening with a rope, insert it into the urethra, untie the rope, and squeeze the blown air into the body; the urine will then flow out smoothly.
Shilin (Stone Lin), take a handful of Tu Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), decoct in water, add Shexiang (Moschus) half a fen and Ruxiang (Olibanum) three fen, and take orally.
Generally, Lin pain indicates excess patterns, while absence of pain indicates deficiency patterns. For excess patterns, use Shengma Gegen Tang (Kudzu and Cimicifuga Decoction) with added Qiaoying (Forsythiae Fructus) and Mutong; for deficiency patterns, use Buzhong Yiqi Tang.
Xuelin (Blood Lin), decoct Cheqianye (Plantaginis Herba); for Shilin, use Liuli (Glaze/Glass - *note: historically refers to specific mineral substances or glass powder in some contexts, kept literal*), grind into powder, and take with wine; this is effective.
Case Record:
A person suffered from Lin syndrome accompanied by cough. This was due to Spleen Qi failing to unblock and ascend Yang, causing turbid fire to descend, preventing Lung Qi from receiving the moistening influence of Spleen Earth, thus resulting in cough. Use Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Fuling (Poria), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), and Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma). Initially, the Lin symptoms may worsen before subsiding. This is because Fuling and Baizhu strengthen the Spleen, while Chaihu and Shengma lift clear Yang. When clear Qi begins to ascend, turbid Yin descends further; hence, there is an initial worsening. Over time, as clear Qi fully ascends and turbidity dissipates, the condition resolves.
