Hou Dan (Unilateral Sore in the Throat)
This condition arises from Liver wind stirring internally and stagnant heat disturbing Qi. The lesion hangs down at the upper part of the throat gate, characterized by a broad base and a narrow head, with bright red coloration and severe pain. Initially, puncture both sides of the affected area to induce bleeding, then insufflate Jin Bu Huan powder and administer one dose of Shu Liu Wei Decoction for gargling. On the next day, add Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), He Che Da Zhi (Placenta Humana), each 2 qian; Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) processed with wine, and Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), each 1 qian. Boil the decoction thoroughly until it boils several times, and consume it to achieve a cure.
Hou Jun (Throat Fungus-like Growth)
This condition is caused by fetal toxicity or by fire-evil of the Heart and Stomach. It grows inside the throat resembling a fungus, hence the name "Hou Jun." Knife or needle intervention is contraindicated. Administration of Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction for Relieving Toxicity) and Yu Shu Dan can prevent its progression, though complete resolution has rarely been observed.
Hou Liu Zheng (Throat Tumor Syndrome)
This syndrome results from anger injuring the Liver, shouting in the wind, congenital deficiency of the root source, or rapid recitation leading to the coagulation of Qi and Blood. It develops inside the throat gate and flares up intermittently. Treatment involves herbs that regulate the root and nourish the source. Yu Shu Dan and Di Huang Wan can be taken regularly. A rapid recovery is difficult to promise. External insufflation therapy may also be applied.
Cha Hou Liu (Branching Throat Tumor)
Throat tumors may also occur outside the throat gate. They are similarly termed tumors; thus, the treatment principles remain the same as above, differing only in the anatomical location. The therapeutic method is identical to the preceding description.
Zuo Yin Chuang (Left Yin Sore)
The Left Yin Sore develops below the Jiache acupoint. It presents with internal heat and external cold sensation, unchanged skin color, and systemic alternating chills and fever. The swelling is large, resembling an eel or carp, commonly known as "Man Li Wen" (Eel-Carp Plague). Administer Liu Wei Tang combined with Wan Ling Dan in one dose, swallowing the pill with the decoction. If the area turns red, treat with formulas for Hou Yong (Throat Abscess). For constipation, add Sheng Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) 3 qian; Yu Shu Dan is also applicable. As this condition belongs to the Shaoyang channel, use Chai Hu and Niu Bang Zi Decoction concurrently with Liu Wei Tang for gargling.
