Xuanqi Xiaoshe (Suspended Flag and Small Tongue)
Xuanqi Feng (Wind of the Suspended Flag) arises from the drooping uvula, where the tip becomes round and thick, as large as a longan seed, and red like a cherry. This is caused by excessive consumption of rich flavors and drying wines, leading to the stagnation and excess of Stomach Fire. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Gancao (Licorice Root, 5 fen), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit, 2 qian), Chishao (Red Peony Root, 1.8 qian), and Heche (Placenta Humanum, 2 qian). Two doses will result in recovery. If bleeding occurs at the swollen site, blowing Jinbuhuan (Golden Unchanging Powder) into it is also effective. The pulse diagnosis presents as a Floating and Surging Stomach Pulse.
(Seven Symptoms Diagram Description)
Songzi Houding (Pine Seed Throat Carbuncle)
Songzi Ding (Pine Seed Carbuncle) appears inside the throat opening or on either side of the uvula, left or right. It resembles a pine seed, is pale red and hard, causes severe pain and difficulty in eating, accompanied by chills in the back and fever. The Cun (Inch) and Guan (Bar) pulses of both hands are Tight and Excessive. This is a syndrome of Wind-Fire stagnation. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Suye (Perilla Leaf), Qianghuo (Notopterygium Rhizome), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Shanjia (Pangolin Scales), and Heche (Placenta Humanum) (each 2 qian). On the next day, remove Qianghuo and Suye, and add Ruxiang (Frankincense, 3 fen) and Yushudan (Jade Pivot Pill, 1 qian). Grind these into fine powder and take them washed down with medicinal decoction. Recovery occurs within two days. Blowing Jinbuhuan (Golden Unchanging Powder) is also acceptable.
Zouma Yagan (Running-Horse Dental Gangrene)
This syndrome is caused by severe accumulation of Heat-Toxin in the Spleen and Stomach. Initially, the gingival flesh swells; after a long time, it rots. This is an acute condition. If teeth fall out and the gingival flesh turns black, it is incurable. A Floating and Surging pulse indicates survival; a Deep and Fine pulse indicates death. If the pulse is Large and Forceful, heavy-dose remedies can still be used for rescue. If the pulse is Slow, Deficient, and Fine, medicines are difficult to administer. Therefore, clinical practice requires detailed pulse examination for treatment. In the initial stage before rotting, prick the swollen area to induce bleeding and apply Jinbuhuan (Golden Unchanging Powder). If already rotted, do not perform needling; apply medication as described above. Use Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome), Gegen (Kudzu Root), Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Substitute with Buffalo Horn in modern practice*), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), each 2 qian; Baixianpi (Dixonia Stem Bark), Gancao (Licorice Root), Xiangbeimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), each 1.5 qian; Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum), 1 liang; Caoheche (Grass Placenta/Herbal equivalent), 1 liang. Decoct in a large pot, consume three to four bowls, and continue for three doses. If the pulse is Rapid and stool is constipated, add Sheng Dahuang (Raw Rheum Root) 5 qian and Sheng Shigao (Raw Gypsum Fibrosum) 1 liang; there may still be hope for rescue. Delay leads to untreatability.
