(Figure Description of the Eleven Syndromes)
Fuhan Houyong (Latent Cold Throat Abscess)
Fuhan Houyong (Latent Cold Throat Abscess) arises from accumulated cold within the interior combined with an external contraction of seasonal pathogenic factors. The local manifestation is redness, swelling, and a purplish discoloration, accompanied by a floating pulse that is not rapid. Treatment utilizes Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Ziheche (Placenta Hominis), Shanjia (Chinensis Manis Squama), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Guiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda) (each 2 qian); Jiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), Ziye (Perilla Folium), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1 qian); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) (3 fen). After two days, add Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) (1 qian), remove Qianghuo and Gegen, and continue with the remaining herbs as previously prescribed; recovery can be expected in four to five days.
Zhonglan Houyong (Swollen and Ulcerated Throat Abscess)
This syndrome originates from accumulated heat in the Spleen, characterized by redness, swelling, and ulceration, with surging and large pulses at the Cun and Guan positions on both wrists. Acupuncture is applied to Shaoshang (LU11), Shangyang (LI11), Guanchong (SJ1), and Shaochong (HT9) (four acupoints on both hands); profuse bleeding is desirable. First, administer Baxian San (Eight-Immortal Powder) by placing it on the tongue to dissolve in saliva and swallow. Then, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) stir-fried with salt water (2 qian), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) stir-fried with salt water (1 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) stir-fried with wine (1.5 qian), Sheng Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma raw) (3 qian), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1 qian), Ziheche (Placenta Hominis) (2 qian). If diarrhea occurs after one dose, remove Dahuang. After three days, apply Shibawei Shen Yao (Eighteen-Ingredient Divine Medicine) and rinse/swallow with Baizhi Zhi (Cupressi Tenuifoliae Ramulus juice) for recovery.
Danbai Houyong (Pale White Throat Abscess)
This syndrome results from Cold affecting the Spleen and Lungs, presenting with a non-red coloration. If cold-natured agents are mistakenly used, suppuration and ulceration will inevitably occur within seven days; once pus forms, puncture the affected area with a needle to drain it. At the initial stage of swelling, acupuncture is applied to Shaoshang (LU11) and Shangyang (LI11) (four acupoints on both hands) to release purple blood. Treatment involves Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Ziye (Perilla Folium), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Guiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda) (each 1.5 qian). After one dose, on the following day, add Shanjia (Chinensis Manis Squama), Jiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), Ziheche (Placenta Hominis) (each 2 qian) for recovery. This syndrome is indicated by wiry and tight pulses in all six positions, accompanied by alternating chills and fever.
Dahong Houyong (Bright Red Throat Abscess)
This syndrome is caused by accumulated heat in the Lungs and Spleen, manifesting as bright red coloration, swelling extending to the Guan position, surging pulses in all six positions, and alternating chills and fever. Urgent acupuncture is applied to Shaoshang (LU11) and Shangyang (LI11), or the swollen area is pricked to release foul blood. Treatment utilizes Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1 qian), Fushi (Lapides Calcitae), Sheng Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma raw) (each 3 qian), Guiwei (Radix Angelicae Sinensis Cauda), Jiaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina), Shanjia (Chinensis Manis Squama), Ziheche (Placenta Hominis) (each 2 qian), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) (each 1.5 qian). Using river water, first decoct the eleven added herbs for twenty to thirty boils, then add Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) and boil briefly before removing from heat. Two doses are sufficient for recovery.
