Swollen and Ulcerated Throat Wind (Zhonglan Houfeng)
This condition is caused by the blazing of wind-fire within the Lung and Stomach. In the initial stage, the pulse is surging (Hong). Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with added: Gegen (Puerariae Radix) and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), each 1 qian. If redness and ulceration do not subside and medication cannot be swallowed, use Liuwei Tang again with added: Danshichi (Fermented Soybean), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), and Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma stir-fried with salt water), each 1 qian; Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), and Baiziren (Biota Seed), each 1.5 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 2 qian; Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 1.5 qian; Fusshi (Pumex), 3 qian. Take two doses consecutively, and simultaneously use one cup of Baizhi Zhi (Cypress Branch Juice) to rinse the mouth with the decoction. After six doses, the condition will stabilize.
Lung-Cold Throat Wind (Feihan Houfeng)
This condition arises from severe cold invading the Lung. The lesion appears in the lower part inside the Guan area, resembling flat bean shells on both sides. The pulse at the right Cun and Guan positions is wiry and tight (Xuan Jin). The area is flat without swelling, but pain is severe, making eating difficult. There is no perforation or ulceration. The patient feels cold in the back and fears cold. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with added: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Suye (Perillae Folium), each 2 qian; Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), and Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), each 1 qian; Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), 0.5 fen. Recovery occurs after two doses.
Labor-Induced Throat Wind (Xinku Houfeng)
This condition is triggered by day-and-night overexertion. There is no swelling, redness, or pain in the throat, but bleeding frequently occurs on both sides of the uvula. The upper pulse is surging and tight (Hong Jin). Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with added: Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix stir-fried with salt water) and Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried with wine), each 2 qian; Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), 1 qian; Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), 1 qian; Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), 2 qian. For cases with intense heat, add: Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), 2 qian; Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma stir-fried with salt water), 2 qian; Danpi (Moutan Cortex), 1 qian; Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), 1 qian; Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), 1 qian. Full recovery is achieved after two or three doses.
Pale Red Throat Wind (Danhong Houfeng)
This condition develops due to the Lung and Spleen contracting wind pathogens. Swelling extends to the uvula, causing throat obstruction and unclear voice. The pulse at the right Cun and Guan positions is wiry and tight (Xuan Jin). Needle Shaoshang (LU11), Shaochong (HT9), and Guanchong (SJ1) [specific acupoints on both hands]. In urgent cases, the affected area may also be pricked to release blood. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with added: Suye (Perillae Folium), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), and Gegen (Puerariae Radix), each 2 qian. Symptoms resolve after one dose.
