Jiu Du Hou Feng (Alcohol-Toxic Throat Wind)
This syndrome is caused by the consumption of strong wine and rich flavors. The lesion occurs in the Guan Nei (inner throat/pharyngeal isthmus), presenting with redness, swelling, excessive phlegm, and difficulty swallowing. The Lung pulse alone appears slow (Chi), while both Left and Right Guan pulses are large. Treatment utilizes Liu Wei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 1 qian), Fu Shi (Calcitum, 3 qian), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 2 qian), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 2 qian), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus, 1 qian, for gargling). The following day, add: Yan Shui Chao Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix stir-fried with salt water), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, each 2 qian). The condition resolves after four doses.
Lao Lu Hou Feng (Overwork-Induced Throat Wind)
This syndrome results from deficiency of both Liver and Kidney. It manifests in the Guan Nei (inner throat/pharyngeal isthmus), with few red spots covering the throat, a white root without swelling, often accompanied by a bloody odor, and triggered by overwork. Treatment utilizes Liu Wei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Yan Shui Chao Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix stir-fried with salt water, 2 qian), Yan Shui Chao Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma stir-fried with salt water, 2 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 2 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, each 1 qian). The following day, add: Lian Qiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 2 qian), Jiu Chao Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried with wine, 2 qian), Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 2 qian), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus stir-fried with salt water, 1 qian). Two days later, discontinue Liu Wei Tang and switch to a decoction formula: Yan Shui Chao Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix stir-fried with salt water, 2 qian), Nv Zhen Zi (Ligustri Lucidi Fructus, 1.5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix, 1.5 qian), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, 1 qian, heart removed), Jiu Chao Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried with wine, 1 qian), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex, 2 qian), Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus, 2 qian), Gui Ban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 3 qian), Sheng He Shou Wu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, 5 qian), Sheng Gan Cao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian). The condition resolves after two additional doses. The pulse presentation shows rapidness and hollowness in all six positions; this is known as Kou Mai (Cork Pulse).
Jiu Han Hou Feng (Alcohol-Cold Throat Wind)
Jiu Han Hou Feng (Alcohol-Cold Throat Wind) is caused by exposure to cold after drinking wine. Both sides of the Guan Nei (inner throat/pharyngeal isthmus) are flat without swelling, featuring four or five pale red patches. Swallowing causes pain, there is no aversion to cold or fever, and the six pulses are surging (Hong Da). Treatment utilizes Liu Wei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) with additions: Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix, 2 qian), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, 2 qian), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix stir-fried with wine, 2 qian), Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix, 1 qian). The condition resolves after one or two doses.
