[Fenghan E (Wind-Cold Tonsillitis)]
This syndrome arises from wind-cold pathogenic factors. The throat swells to the size of a plum, the head cannot look downwards, and qi is obstructed and blocked. The cun (distal) and guan (middle) pulses are floating and tight, indicating a disease of the Lung and Stomach channels. Treatment involves needling: Shaoshang (LU11), Shangyang (LI1), Shaochong (HT9) (six acupoints on both hands). Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Perilla Leaf (Su Ye, 2 qian), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qiang Huo, 2 qian). One dose leads to recovery. If cold-natured herbs are used too early, the swelling will not subside.
[White Tonsillitis]
White tonsillitis presents with swelling blocking the entire mouth, accompanied by aversion to cold and fever. All six pulse positions are floating and wiry. This syndrome is caused by wind-cold affecting the Lungs. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Perilla Leaf (Su Ye, 2 qian), Asarum Root (Xi Xin, 3 fen), Notopterygium Rhizome (Qiang Huo, 2 qian). One dose can cure it.
[Shi E (Stone Tonsillitis)]
This syndrome may be congenital or due to insufficiency of the original essence. It occurs in the location of tonsillitis, extending slightly inward by half a cun. In the initial stage, cold-natured herbs must absolutely not be used, nor should knife-and-needle surgery be employed. This condition results from Liver fire and old phlegm condensing into malignant blood stasis; it flares up upon exposure to fatigue, hardship, wind, or heat. Use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) added with: Fritillaria Bulb (Chuan Bei, 1 qian), Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di, 2 qian), Arctium Fruit (Bang Zi, 1 qian), Moutan Bark (Dan Pi, 1.5 qian), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong, 1 qian), Akebia Stem (Mu Tong, 1 qian). Decoct and take for four to five doses. If it does not resolve, use Liuwei Tang (Six-Ingredient Decoction) modified with: Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di, 1.5 qian), Moutan Bark (Dan Pi, 1 qian), Fritillaria Bulb (Xiang Bei, 0.2 qian), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 1 qian), Arctium Fruit (Niu Bang, 1 qian), Platycodon Root (Jie Geng, 0.8 fen), Ophiopogon Tuber (Mai Dong, 1 qian), Akebia Stem (Mu Tong, 0.6 fen), Mint Leaf (Bo He Ye, 1 qian), added with Juncus Rush Pith (Deng Xin, 0.2 fen). Decoct and take until cured. Apply Xionghuang Tuizhong Yao (Realgar Swelling-Reducing Powder) by insufflation.
[Fuhan Rumei (Latent Cold Tonsillitis)]
In cases of latent cold, the color is invariably purple. The treatment method is the same as that described under the section for Purple Hou Yong (Throat Carbuncle). In cases where pregnant women suffer from throat carbuncles, if internal medication is contraindicated or problematic, decoct the medicine for throat carbuncles to a high concentration, gargle in the throat, and then spit it out. This can also lead to complete recovery.
