Wang’s wife, after suffering from dysentery in early autumn, had not recovered from loose stools. Subsequently, she became pregnant and, fearing miscarriage, was continuously administered tonifying treatments. By mid-winter, her eyes were red with pupils obscured, qi rebellion prevented sleep, epigastric pain was present with tenderness upon pressure, she suffered from phlegm-cough and anorexia, extreme thirst, and urinary retention. Mengying examined her pulse, which was very slippery and rapid. He said: This is phlegm-heat generated by warm-tonifying medicines. The dysentery in autumn originally belonged to pathogenic factors of summer-heat, dampness, and heat. Since clear-resolving treatment was lost, the pathogens lingered and transformed into loose stools. Since conception, four months have passed; due to fear of miscarriage, harsh tonification was used, reversing the descending function of the Lung and Stomach upwards. Thus, chest obstruction and pain occurred, along with wheezing and coughing preventing lying down. Fearing collapse from upper wheezing and lower diarrhea, stronger tonification was applied, causing the regulatory function (Zhi Jie) of the Lung to be completely abolished. Urinary retention and loss of appetite resulted, turbid qi stagnated and rose, causing the clear orifices (eyes) to be blinded. Prescribed: Sha Shen (Glehniae Radix), Ge Qiao (Trisynii Concha), Pi Pa Ye (Eriobotryae Folium), Dong Gua Zi (Benincasae Semen), Hai Shi (Pumex), Xuan Fu Hua (Inulae Flos), Su Zi (Perillae Fructus), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), with heavy addition of Bei Mu (Fritillariae Bulbus). After two doses, she felt hungry, dared to get out of bed, and could see again.
Xie’s wife, at five months of pregnancy, suffered from diarrhea for four days. A physician administered a dose of Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), and Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus). Immediately afterwards, her limbs became numb and cold, qi stagnation caused unconsciousness, urinary retention and profuse sweating occurred, accompanied by extreme thirst and vomiting. Mengying examined her pulse, which had not fully vanished. She was first given soy sauce soup, after which vomiting gradually stopped. Then, a prescription was given: Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Flos), Bian Dou Ye (Phaseoli Folium), Pu Tao Gan (Vitis Viniferae Fructus), Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Lv Dou (Phaseoli Radiati Semen), decocted in Winter Melon Decoction, taken slowly and warm. Externally, vinegar-charcoal fumigation was applied, and all ailments resolved.
On the next day’s follow-up, the pulse was wiry and slippery, and diarrhea persisted. Bai Tou Weng Tang (Pulsatillae Decoction) was modified with Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Yin Hua (Lonicerae Flos), Bian Dou (Phaseoli Semen), Pu Gong Ying (Taraxaci Herba), Pu Tao Gan (Vitis Viniferae Fructus), and Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus Rotundus). After two doses, she recovered.
A young Manchu woman suffered from Tai Lou (threatened abortion with vaginal bleeding) during pregnancy. Various physicians administered tonics, but bleeding continued. Occasionally, when bleeding stopped, she vomited blood. Over two years, fetal movement gradually appeared in the abdomen, confirming pregnancy. However, prolonged blood loss above and below led to immediate vomiting upon eating, and many physicians failed to treat it. Mengying examined her pulse, which was slippery, rapid, and forceful, indicating excess qi and blood-heat. The syndrome was not deficiency; tonics aggravated the disease. More tonification led to more bleeding, and the fetus lacked blood nourishment to grow. It did not miscarry only because the qi aspect was solid. Large doses of Qing Ying (Clear Nutrient Level) herbs were prescribed, and bleeding stopped. However, she frequently vomited thin foam, vomited immediately upon drinking, felt thirsty, palpitations, and shortness of breath resembling urgency. A prescription was used: Xi Yang Shen (American Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis), Pi Pa Ye (Eriobotryae Folium), Zhu Ru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Shi Di (Kaki Calyx), Sheng Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus), with heavy use of Wu Mei (Mume Fructus). After one cup, she was calm, and the next day she could eat.
