[Background Information]
Book: Huichun Lu (Record of Revival) Author: Wang Shiwei Dynasty: Qing Chapter: Preface / Common Cold Category: Comprehensive
[Preface Translation]
My friend, Mr. Wang Mengying, lost his father in his youth. On his deathbed, his father held Mengying's hand and instructed him, saying, "A person lives between heaven and earth; one must strive to be useful to the world. Remember these words, and I shall have no regrets." Mengying wept, bowed, and engraved these words in his heart. However, considering his poor family background and aloof character, he could not become a person pursuing fame and wealth. How then could he be useful to the world? Hearing the ancient saying, "If one cannot be a good prime minister, one should be a good physician," he named his study "Qianzhai" (Hidden Studio). He set his mind on studying the medical theories of Huangdi and Qibo (Xuanqi), delving deeply into research, thereby grasping their subtleties. Before reaching the age of twenty (uncrowned), while traveling in Changshan, he befriended me. Every time I saw his miraculous healing skills, it seemed as if endowed by heaven. In his leisure from treating diseases, he was always reading a book without ceasing. Later, I saw a couplet in his study: "Reading books to understand principles, loving learning with an open mind." This shows his bitter determination to study hard; what he harbored in his chest was profound and unfathomable, enabling him to exhaust principles and understand human nature. What emerged from his fingertips was divine and difficult to describe. For twenty years, he has saved countless lives without error. Is this not using his talent for governing the world and applying his art to save the world, so that it may be passed down to posterity? Now, taking the wonderful methods within my sight and hearing, and imitating the example of Ding Changru printing Zhongchun's medical cases, I record them and have them printed, naming this book *Huichun Lu* (Record of Revival). However, my knowledge is limited, and many beautiful cases are omitted. Gentlemen of the world, such as Zhuang Lianzhi and Hua Xiuyun, will surely further search widely and collect extensively to spread its influence. As the one who throws out bricks to attract jade, I feel honored.
Written by your humble brother Zhou, in the twelfth month of winter, Gui Mao year, 23rd year of Daoguang.
Case 1: Old Man Yi
Old Man Yi, nearly eighty years old, contracted a common cold (Wind-Cold Exopathy) in winter, presenting with facial redness, rebellious Qi, and restlessness. Mengying said, "This is what Yu Jiayan referred to as 'Common Cold also having Dai Yang Syndrome' (Floating Yang Syndrome)." It must not be underestimated. Prescription: Dongyang Ginseng, Xixin (Asarum), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Licorice Root), Shu Fupian (Prepared Aconite Child Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Baishao (White Peony Root), Fuling (Poria), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), Wuweizi (Schisandra Berry), Hetao Rou (Walnut Kernel), Xicha (Fine Tea), Congbai (Scallion White). One dose resulted in recovery. Mengying explained, "This is due to inherent disturbance of True Yang, internal movement of Phlegm-Fluids, insecurity of Defensive Yang, and external invasion of Wind Pathogen, with the danger of root extraction. Misusing exterior-releasing dispersants would cause loss of Yang through a single sweat. Therefore, methods like Zhenwu Tang (True Warrior Decoction) and Sini Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) were used to restore Yang, suppress Phlegm-Fluids, repel external pathogens, and stabilize the interior. This prescription should not be tried lightly on others to avoid the guilt of reckless practice. Be extremely cautious!"
Case 2: Jiang Xiaoxiang
Jiang Xiaoxiang suffered from a critical condition and sent someone to invite Mengying for diagnosis. The pulse was deficient, wiry, rapid, and small. Headache was localized to the left side. Late at night, there was fever and irritability, cold limbs, nausea, dry mouth without desire to drink, no hunger, and no desire to eat. Tongue was stiff with slurred speech, urine was yellow and frequent. Mengying said, "The constitution is inherently deficient. This arose from contracting seasonal pathogens, followed by excessive use of warm-dispersing drugs, injuring both Yin fluids and Yang Qi. Subsequent tonification aggravated the condition because cloying substances hindered middle-jiao transportation, and harsh drugs stirred internal Wind. Thus, physicians claimed that releasing the exterior was ineffective and tonification was useless, resulting in a seemingly untreatable state. Nevertheless, it is merely difficult to treat, not hopeless." Prescription: Gaoli Shen (Korean Ginseng) processed with Qiushi Water (Nitre Water), Rongrong (Cistanche), Shouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum), Sheng Baishao (Raw White Peony Root), Muli (Oyster Shell), Lianshi (Melia Azedarach Fruit) stir-fried with salt water, Juhong (Tangerine Red), Sangshen (Mulberry Fruit), Shihu (Dendrobium), Jili (Tribulus Terrestris), Fuling (Poria). Decoct and swallow Wan Rouguixin (Cinnamon Heart Pills) made from rice paste, 5 fen. After one dose, irritability subsided, vomiting stopped, and symptoms improved. After several doses, porridge intake stabilized. Then, remove Shouwu and Lianshi; add Shudi (Rehmannia Root) stir-fried with Shaoren (Amomum Fruit powder), Juhua (Chrysanthemum), Gouqi (Goji Berry). Recovered after half a month.
Case 3: Zhou Zichao
Zhou Zichao suffered from aversion to cold, headache, and fever, resembling Taiyang Cold Damage (Shanghan), accompanied by pain and distension in the epigastrium. Mengying palpated the pulse: right side was deep and slippery, coating was yellow, no thirst, urine resembled Su Mu (Sappan Wood) juice. First prescribed Congchi Tang (Scallion and Fermented Soybean Decoction) plus Zhizi (Gardenia), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Louren (Trichosanthes Seed), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel). After ingestion, slight sweating occurred; aversion to cold ceased, replaced by aversion to heat. Even slightly warm decoctions caused severe rebellious Qi. Mengying said, "The exogenous pathogen has resolved; clear the Phlegm-Heat." Prescribed: Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Huafen (Trichosanthes Root), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower), Huashi (Talc), Shihu (Dendrobium), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Maogen (Imperata Rhizome), Lugeng (Reed Rhizome), Dili (Water Chestnut), Hai Zhe (Sea Cucumber/Calamary - likely referring to Hai Zhe in context of phlegm resolution). The patient expectorated much gelatinous phlegm, and appetite gradually recovered. Only dyspnea upon exertion remained. Treatment focused on "descending Lung Qi" assisted by "nourishing the Lower Jiao" for convalescence, leading to recovery.
Note on Dai Yang Syndrome:
The book *Yuyi Cao* states, "Common cold can also present as Dai Yang Syndrome." This refers to elderly patients. However, similar presentations can be deceptive. Case of Mrs. Huang Dingru: Elderly, contracted cold in late winter, with coughing with phlegm, rebellious Qi, forehead sweating, malar flush, chest fullness, anorexia, and mental agitation. Pulse: left wiry, rapid, and hurried; right slippery, rapid, and overflowing. Coating covered the tongue completely. Diagnosis: Winter-Warmth combined with Phlegm obstructing the Lung, impairing its regulating function, with Liver Yang stirring upward. Similar to Luo Qianfu's case of "treating Phlegm-Fire mimicking isolated Yang." Prescribed Xiaoxianxiong Tang (Minor Stagnant Chest Decoction) plus Xiebai (Macrostemon Bulb), Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower), Zhesi (Hematite), Huafen (Trichosanthes Root), Hai Zhe (Sea Cucumber), Fu Zi (Eleocharis Tubers), Zhuli (Bamboo Juice). Large dose administered. Phlegm cleared, bowels moved, recovered in a few days.
Case of Father of Chen Shunting:
Over sixty years old, suffering from coughing with phlegm and rebellious Qi. Only felt comfortable in the chest after drinking ginger soup. Physicians diagnosed true deficiency-cold. Continuous administration of warm-tonifying agents led to sore throat, anorexia, gray prickly coating, constipation, and anuria. Mengying diagnosed: Double wiry pulse, empty upon pressure, but slight Stomach Qi remains. Explanation: Thirst preferring ginger soup is evidence of Phlegm obstructing Clear Yang, not necessarily cold. Repeated use of harsh/warm drugs exhausted Stomach Yin; medication is now ineffective.
Case of Shi Fusheng:
Spring of Bing Shen year. Shi Fusheng from Sichuan, traveling to Hangzhou under illness, stayed at Zhang Liuyin's former residence. Treated by Chen Liushun nearby. Upon hearing of Liuyin's servant's illness, Shi summoned Mengying. Pulse: deep, choppy, indistinct rate. Cold limbs, fear of cold, surging saliva, scanty urination and defecation, dull spirit. Diagnosis: Contracted Wind-Damp during travel, failed to resolve, transformed into Heat. Warm tonification exacerbated Qi stagnation, trapping pathogenic Heat without exit, burning fluids into Phlegm, reversing upward. Treatment: Unblock Qi mechanism to move Phlegm and descend Heat. Prescribed: Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Zhizi (Gardenia), Danshi (Fermented Soybean), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Yujin (Curcuma Root), Tongcao (Tetrapanax Pith), Ziwan (Aster Root), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), Lubo Zhi (Radish Juice). Three doses improved condition; full recovery after one month of regulation.
Case of Yu Mou:
Male, over thirty, fever for several days. Previous doctor used cooling-resolving methods, resulting in vomiting, spontaneous sweating, cold limbs, and fatigue. Mengying diagnosed: Weak pulse. Diagnosis: Internal injury (Neishang), not Summerheat-Turbidity (Fushu). Do not treat uniformly without differentiation. Prescribed Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Middle-Joint Building Decoction) minus Yitang (Maltose), plus Longgu (Dragon Bone), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel). Immediate relief. Continued with Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Baizhu (Atractylodes), recovered after ten days.
Case of He Xinzhi:
Confucian physician, ill for ten days. Hu Shiyang diagnosed "pathogen about to sink inward." Family panicked. Cousin Shen Yueting, skilled in medicine and admiring Mengying, invited him. Symptoms: Hiccups, greasy coating, constipation, profuse phlegm, tenderness on pressure in epigastrium. Pulse: Right hand洪大 (Surging), large, slippery, rapid. Prescribed Xiaoxianxiong Tang (Minor Stagnant Chest Decoction) plus Shashen (Glehnia Root), Changpu (Acorus Rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Ziwan (Aster Root), Xiebai (Macrostemon Bulb), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower), Pi Pa Ye (Loquat Leaf). Several doses brought peace. Followed by sweet-cool herbs. Recovered after twenty days with bowel movement.
Case of Shi Zhiqing:
Contracted cold. Dr. Zhang used Chaihu (Bupleurum) and Gegen (Pueraria), fever subsided slightly but rebounded severely. Mengying consulted. First, Zhizi (Gardenia), Danshi (Fermented Soybean), Huangqin (Scutellaria), Huanglian (Coptis) to clear floating Heat. Once pathogen entered the Fu organs, pulse became wiry, slippery, and solid. Directly used Chengqi Tang (Purgative Decoction) to purge. Father Beiya was away; family hesitated due to fear of harshness and lack of abdominal hardness. Another doctor advised against it. Night visit: Mengying argued firmly, insisted on previous plan. Patient passed black stool. Next day: High fever, profuse sweating, intense thirst. Mengying said, "Fu waste expelled, Jing (Channel) heat exposed." Prescribed Zhuye Shigao Tang (Leaf of Bamboo and Gypsum Decoction) for two doses, followed by Yin-nourishing and fluid-supplementing therapy for recovery.
Case of Fan Lianju:
Illness. Worsened after ten days. Jin Suxiang recommended Mengying. Bowels moved, fever subsided but not fully, rebellious Qi, anorexia, hiccups, spontaneous sweating. Pulse: deficient and large. Tongue: purple, no coating. Diagnosis: Upper Jiao Heat lingering, Lower Jiao Yin deficiency. Prescribed: Xiyangshen (American Ginseng), Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), Pipaye (Loquat Leaf), Shihu (Dendrobium), Shidi (Persimmon Calyx), Muli (Oyster Shell), Guiban (Tortoise Plastron), Daodou (Lablab Bean), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root). Two doses: tongue moist, appetite returned, hiccups/sweating stopped. Remove Daodou, Xuanfuhua, Shidi; add Shudi (Rehmannia), Hetao Rou (Walnut Kernel), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis). Recovered.
Case of Fan Lianju's Wife:
Symptoms: Greasy coating, sour taste, tinnitus, insomnia, anorexia, exhaustion, epigastric pain, head tremor. Pulse: deficient-wiry, choppy-weak upon pressure. Prescription: Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Baishao (White Peony Root), Gouqi (Goji Berry), Mugua (Chaenomeles Fruit), Lianshi (Melia Azedarach), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Shihu (Dendrobium), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Zhuru (Bamboo Shavings), Lanye (Orchid Leaf), Baudoukou (White Cardamom). Method: Nourish Ying (Nutrient) Qi, regulate Qi, harmonize Stomach, soften Liver. Recovered after a few doses.
Case of Fan Lianju's Daughter:
Contracted cold. High fever, difficulty defecating, obstruction of both urine and stool, yellow coating, extreme thirst, unbearable distension. Pulse: wiry, slippery, rapid, solid. Diagnosis: Fu organ excess syndrome. Prescribed Taohe Chengqi Tang (Peach Kernel and Mirabilite Purgative Decoction) plus She Tui (Snake Slough), Laifu (Radish). Two doses cured. Fan Yinghe (Father) remarked: "One must be extremely cautious with medication. Three cases were deemed critical by other doctors and worsened with treatment. You revived them in one or two doses. How miraculous! I recall suffering from Malaria (Gu Jue) at age forty-two. Hu Kuiyuan used Shouwu (Polygonum Multiflorum) too early, causing pathogen retention for a hundred days. Since then, I have avoided medication for forty years."
