An elderly woman of the Pu family, during a scorching autumn, developed boils all over her body resembling carbuncles (deep-seated skin infections), with unbearable pain. Her urination was either obstructed or frequent; when attempting defecation, she strained but could not pass stool, and when lying down, she suffered from incontinence. People generally considered this to be a deficiency syndrome. Mengying palpated the pulse, finding it slippery and rapid; the tongue was purplish, coated with yellow moss, accompanied by thirst. He prescribed Baihu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) added with Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), Baiwei (Cynanchum Atratum Root), Ziwan (Aster Root), Shihu (Dendrobium Stem), and Huangbai (Phellodendron Bark). After taking more than ten doses, she recovered.
Wu Maolin, a native of Xi County, suffered from swelling and pain on the right cheek and tubercles (nodules) under the chin, with trismus (lockjaw) such that he could only consume thin porridge. Surgeons gave various names to this condition, and their treatments were as disorganized as a net without a cord. Mengying administered: Dama (likely Daqing/Isatis Root, preserved as original text), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Shentoucao (Herba Siegesbeckiae), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis), Qinjiao (Gentiana Macrophylla Root), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), and Huangqin (Scutellaria Baicalensis Root), among other herbs. The condition gradually improved.
The daughter of Prefect Zhu Xiaohui suddenly developed swelling of the parotid region, extending to the lips and nose, so much so that her mouth could not open and her tongue could not protrude. Upon examination, Mengying said: This is Wendu (Warmth-Toxin). He used: Shegan (Belamcanda Rhizome), Shandougen (Sophorae Tonkinensis Radix), Mabo (Lycoperdon), Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), and Zhuhu (Pericarpium Arecae Preparatum) as a decoction. Additionally, Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) was applied inside the lips, Xilei San (Xilei Powder) was blown into the throat, and the outside of the swollen area was rubbed with ground olive pits. Indeed, tough saliva was expectorated, and the swelling gradually subsided. By the next morning, she could drink thin porridge, and she recovered after a few days.
Madam Hu suffered from breast tubercles (nodules). Surgeons indiscriminately administered warming and tonifying medicines, causing the nodules to increase in size while pain and distension worsened daily. Eventually, she became emaciated, menstruation ceased, night fevers occurred, appetite decreased, and she became bedridden due to bone weakness. Mengying diagnosed: "Emotional depression has damaged the spirit; what benefit is there in mere tonification?" He provided a formula to resolve phlegm and relieve stagnation, along with Danggui Longhui Wan (Angelica and Picrorhiza Pill) to be swallowed. The pain and distension subsided sequentially, fever receded, appetite returned, and menstruation resumed. He then switched to modified Huyan Wan (Tiger Hiding Pill), which she took for over half a year until she recovered. In total, seven or eight jin (approx. 3-4 kg) of Chuanbeimu (Sichuan Fritillaria Bulb) were used, and other herbs were consumed in similar quantities.
In the spring of this year, due to excessive grief from mourning her mother, she suddenly fainted. Mengying prescribed Ganmai Dazao Tang (Licorice, Wheat, and Jujube Decoction) added with Longgu (Fossilized Mammoth Tooth/Bone), Muli (Oyster Shell), Guiban (Tortoise Plastron), Biejia (Turtle Carapace), Cizhu Wan (Magnetite and Cinnabar Pill), Jinbo (Gold Foil), and Longyanrou (Longan Aril), after which she stabilized.
