Swelling and enlargement of the head and neck. Grind Indigo Flos (Dianhua) from Fujian into a fine powder, three qian, mix with one egg white (Jizi Qing), stir with distilled liquor (Shaojiu), and take orally. Crush Platycladi Cacumen (Cebaiye) to extract natural juice, blend with earthworm mud (Yinini), grind, and apply externally. (Indigo Flos can be found in dyeing workshops.)
Sulfur (Liu Huang, 1 qian), Zanthoxyl Pericarpium (Chuanjiao, 3 qian; select red ones, remove black seeds, and grind into powder).
Mix the above two ingredients evenly, melt, and form into small cakes. If pain is on the left, block the left nostril so that clear discharge flows from the right nostril; if pain is on the right, block the right nostril; if pain is central, block both nostrils. Recovery occurs once the clear discharge has completely drained. This method is highly effective.
Astragali Radix (Ben, 5 fen), Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 5 fen), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Xiangbaizhi, 1 qian), Magnoliae Flos (Xinyi, 8 fen).
Grind all together into a fine powder, divide into four portions. Take four strips of paper, roll them tightly, ignite, and use the smoke to fumigate the nasal cavity. Perform fumigation twice daily until recovery.
Make a cake using aged buckwheat flour (Chenqiaomai mian). Apply it hot to the affected area on the head, and secure it tightly with silk cloth. Sweating allows the cake to absorb wind-toxins completely. Two applications are sufficient for recovery.
During the dog days of summer, maggots from dung pits are used; larger ones are preferred. Retrieve them and wash thoroughly with running water. Place the maggots between two bucket tiles. Seal both ends of the tiles with mud mixed with saltwater. Roast over charcoal fire for the duration of one incense stick until the maggots turn yellow. If not yet yellow, roast further in a clay pot until yellow. Iron or copper vessels must strictly be avoided. For each dose, use yellow maggot (Huangqu, 1.5 qian, ground into powder), Yunnan Tea Vine (Songluo cha, 0.75 qian), Costus Root (Guangmuxiang, 0.15 qian, ground into powder), and Cardamomi Fructus Preparatus (Zhidoukou, 0.45 qian).
Grind all into an extremely fine powder. At the fifth watch (Wugeng), take orally on an empty stomach, mixed with half a tea cup of distilled liquor. For those who cannot drink alcohol, mix with water and liquor. Avoid wheat-based foods and meat/fish products for several days.
Take half of a very large Aurantii Fructus (Zhike), removing the inner pulp. Mix real Asafoetida (Wei, 0.6-0.7 fen) with more than ten apricot kernels (Xingren, peeled and de-husked), pound them into a paste, and insert into the hollowed-out Zhike halves. Seal the two halves together, wrap tightly with cotton paper, tie securely with thread, and boil in boiling water over high heat for half a day. Remove, discard the shell, dry the remaining medicine along with the shell by roasting, grind into powder, and take with distilled liquor. Severe cases recover within two doses. Early-stage cases respond miraculously; chronic cases may show little effect.
